If It Ain't Broke...

A Montclair tipster writes in with a beef about new parking permits...

The usual standard parking permit for the past 10 years...a stick on decal that is applied on your back side window. Pretty tough to lose, and once applied, almost impossible for someone to steal. Replacement fee: something like, $5.00.

The new permit: A cardboard rectangle that hangs off of the rear view mirror-- not only is it distracting and obstructs your vision while driving, but in my opinion, it invites theft. Oh yeah-- replacement fee: $10. I'm no swami, but I foresee some broken windows in all commuter parking lots in the next few months. Who is the genius making these decisions!!? Apparently someone who thinks that Montclair police have nothing better to do but patrol the parking lots all day! Give that guy a raise!

While I don't have a Montclair parking decal, I do have one for my job and I HATE IT.

I would much rather have a removable rearview tag.

And I doubt that there will be a rash of thefts for these tags. Think about it, who needs them? Can you see Montclair commuters going to the "parking decal black market"?

It's not like an ipod or GPS.

These tags are only worth something to folks who need parking. Not really the kinda folks who trade in stolen property.

I agree. I think it looks terrible when some vehicles have ten stickers on them, from the past five years.

I think the removable tag will make it easier to use in a few different vehicles. I had my car in the shop and had to buy a temporary permit. Now I just take the small hangtag out and put it in the rental car.

MUCH EASIER.
MUCH MORE CONVENIENT.

THEY FINALLY GOT IT RIGHT!!

....and if the police are not in a very good mood you can be ticketed for "obstruction of view". It happened to my niece with one of the car deordorizers that hung from the mirror.

Pssst, I'm interested in a parking permit. Contact me at the number below, please mention the password "Illbegotten Project Train Permit" when calling.

Posted by ackme | March 24, 2008 11:39 AM

I don't think it can be written if it isn't lower than the mirror.
The new permits are much shorter than a handicapped placard and in no way obstruct a view.
I don't know what town your niece was driving through when she received a ticket for an air freshener, but that sounds like there was more to the story.

Posted by realistic | March 24, 2008 11:44 AM

Think about it, who needs them?

Umm... Someone who doesn't want to pay for overnight parking or wants to use the pass to park in any of the "permit only" spots that tend to be the only open ones in certain parts of town.

If it's such a huge problem/eye sore; pass some sort of ordinance that fines people for having too many stickers on their car... Say they're obstructing their vision or something... It really isn't that hard to take the old permits off of your window.

But, as someone who tends to leave their car in the same spot all weekend, I can definitely see a hightened possibility for a smashed window.

Hell, I don't even leave loose change visible in my consule because I've known people who've had their windows smashed in for what might have been a dollar or two in emergency Parkway change.

I have to imagine the hangtags would have unique numbers on them. Someone using a hangtag with a number reported stolen would definitely have some 'splaining to do.

Also, personally, I always thought having a lot of parking stickers in a back window was kind of cool.

We switch ours between two cars frequently. Recently had it slip down into the door frame and couldn't rtetrieve it. When i picked up the replacement, I was told that it isn't an uncommon problem. Possibly that was one of the reasons for the switch?

GNM,

I hate stickers on MY car. You can do whatever you like. No need for an ordinance.

And if there is a "hightened possibility for a smashed window" with hangtags, have there been similar "smashed windows" with the temp tags the town gives out?

But I don't really care either way. I don't have/need them, so you folks who do can do whatever you like.

(I just hate permanent stickers on my car-- this includes the dealer advertising-- I asked for it to be removed before I picked up my car. The dealer was like, what? I said take it off. Unless you pay me a monthly fee... They took it off.)

My son was ticketed for his graduation tassel obstructing his view. He was on Grove just after turning off of Alexander. No other summons was issued so there was nothing else going on.

I just assumed it was "quota" time and that particular officer hadn't made his.

Hiding....
Once again, there had to be MORE to the story. It has been my experience that people don't just get those tickets. There was either a break given for something else or a pile up of tickets for those people who decide to argue and yell at the police.
Thats why when I get pulled over I'm very pleasant.
If I want to argue, and I do, I go to court.

have there been similar "smashed windows" with the temp tags the town gives out?

There's a difference between a $5.00 one-day permit and a $180 6-month permit.

Also, the temptation to bypass the 2-year waiting list for a street permit, day permit, or Crescent Deck permit may be too great for some to pass up (and if you think the cops, meter maids, or whomever cross check every permit number to make sure it's on the right car; I've got a cliche to sell you.).

Posted by Generically named Mike | March 24, 2008 12:40 PM

(Good point, GnM. But I still can't imagine a rash of smashed windows. But why doesn't someone ask the town to have both so folks can choose.)

Posted by profwilliams | March 24, 2008 12:47 PM

i agree with mike. All it takes is some kid who cant find parking for a restaurant or bar, and decides to park in a permit only spot. Gets a ticket, and the next day while skateboarding through a municipal lot, snatches a new permit. I have a jeep, and during the warmer months, I have no way of protecting anything in my car. A sticker would be better than a placard in my case

Posted by jimmytown | March 24, 2008 12:52 PM

Actually the number on the tag is usually your license plate number that way they can look at your tag, then down at your plate and know it's yours.

Off with their heads. All parking should be free. All power to the people!

jimmy, if you get a moment would you mind posting the location of your parking spot for the jeep?
Regards!

cro-
the rule of thumb with a wrangler is that nothing inside is worth cutting your soft top for. With that said, you just have to leave your doors unlocked and hope that its just the loose change thats removed and not your speakers, or worse, your accessories. And yet, its great for the summer and winter alike, and there is no other kind of car you can get away with driving without doors!

You've all seen folks with the temp (or perm) handicap tag (shaped sorta like a necktie) hanging from their rear view mirror. Did you know that each & everyone who drives mile after mile after mile with that is in fact, breaking the law? When given to you (I had one, a Temp. for 5 weeks) you are told that you need to keep it under your sun visor, and attach it to the R.V. Mirrior only when you park. Think about it...it's common sence, it's for handicap parking, yet every day you can see many swaying back 'n forth from the mirror!

Only sticker I have on my car is the dealer's sticker where I bought it, and that is because I love them, they are so great to me (and everyone) and I appreciate any business that goes 100% for their patrons.

GR has plastic hanging tags. They are rectangular and when in place are about the same size as the mirror so they don't obstruct the view. They are also numbered with the license plate registered with the police. I think it is a good system, but then I don?t like stickers.

I love jeeps, jimmy. I had 2 Cherokees and loved them. Both stolen. One of them twice.
But I still love them!

My new tag was waiting for me last night when I got home and employing it that night made me realize something new: How are the cops going to check to make sure you have a valid/current tag?

The old system had a brightly colored sticker on the rear right window where a passing patrol car or meter-maid on foot could easily see it even without the aid of a flashlight.

The new night passes are white with orange lettering and hang facing out the windshield. If you park like I did last night (nose-in between 2 SUVs against the back fence of the municipal lot), the only way for someone checking tags to see it would be to squeeze between the SUVs and lean over the hood of my car.

Also, there's no place on the new tags for someone to write their license plate number where it could also be seen from the outside of the car (I wrote mine on the back of the tag, for all the good it would do someone looking at it from the front).

Prof, you got my kindred souls vote today! I always make the dealer take off those rotten placards and decals. Sometimes I even take off their license plate frames too, when I'm really feeling ambitious.

GnM has a good point about visibility - years ago I worked in town and had a permit sticker in the back window. Don'cha know I got a ticket for not having a sticker. I think the metermaid looked at the wrong window. So pretty soon they'll say you have to back into the parking space so they can see your hang-tag!

For pete's sake, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Why change things? Was it a make-work, justify-your-existence project for the Parking Authority?
