Is Corzine Trying to Buy Clinton an Election?

Monday, March 10, 2008

Jon Corzine's offer to help raise money for new primaries in Florida and Michigan, reported today in the New York Times, might just sound generous -- if it wasn't for that fact that he and his partner in this initiative, Gov. Edward Rendell of Pennsylvania, are both Clinton supporters. Maybe, before they offered, they should have gotten a Barack Obama fan onboard.

What do you think? Do-over? Stick with the DNC decision to punish the two states for violating party rules? Or seat the delegates the two primaries produced, even though Obama wasn't on the ballot in Michigan, and voters in both states knew it was just a straw election?

Meanwhile Baristaville's own political pundit, Steve Adubato, is now taking his political cues from Saturday Night Live. Read about his comedic epiphany here.

I THOUGHT Obama was already given the Presidency?

No?

Seriously though, can Corzine worry about the mess he's presiding over here in the Garden State?

(I guess he'd rather deal with something he can control, something that he's good at, something his MONEY can handle...)

profwilliams,

Are we seeing a more politically correct version of the Willy Horton tactic?

Posted by Nana | March 10, 2008 10:37 AM

Are they also going to have "do overs" in the other states that had more candidates when the people voted? What's done is done. If it's a tie in the end, put them both on the ticket.

Do tell...

Questioning Obama is not the same as the Horton ad.

Remember the Horton ad was about the Mass. prison work release program that existed under Dukkakis(?). The program allowed a black prisoner (Horton) out, he then raped a woman and killed her boyfriend (funny thing: their race is not mentioned in the ad).

Understand though, while it lends itself to being called "racist" the program did exist and Horton did do the crime.

So simply questioning Obambi is not even close to it.

Moreover, Mr. "I'm from the South Side" (by way of Indonesia) needs to show he can fight a bit. And if he or his people are bringing up Horton, it just proves how soft he is (remember, we can't even mention the man's middle name...).

For me, he's soft. I don't vote for soft people... Okay, not anymore.... Gore... Kerry...--- Soft... Soft... But I've changed my ways.

McCain and Clinton are a lot of things, but soft ain't one of 'em.

Posted by profwilliams | March 10, 2008 11:06 AM

prof, Willie Horton was imprisoned for murdering (along with "friends") a gas station attendant. While on furlough, he raped a white woman and terrorized, but did not murder, her companion. The program did indeed exist under Dukakis' administration, though it originated with Governor Sargent earlier. Dukakis refused to veto a provision to this program that would have made murderers ineligible, with lamentable results as we all we know. It is remarkable how an event so old, in a political context, can still be misunderstood at this late date.
That said, I agree that Corzine's move does not approximate this event. And while Obama may of may not turn out to be "soft", I disagree with the characterization of Kerry or Gore as "soft". How do you define it? What makes them "soft" while Clinton is not?

Posted by croiagusanam | March 10, 2008 11:25 AM

Is Corzine trying to buy Clinton an election?

Should he give Mr. Obama special treatment too, or can he just back whomever he wants?
I don't agree with anything he does, but please do not attack someone for not backing both parties. This makes SNL's sketch appear as if it is a reality show.

Posted by realistic | March 10, 2008 11:39 AM

When the chips were down, both Kerry and Gore did not fight. For Kerry, he kept his terry cloth gloves on as he was being "swift boated."

Gore chose to act like a loser during the Florida recount, while Bush acted like the winner and all he could muster during one of his early press conferences was something like: "what a great lesson in democracy this is..."

Soft... Soft...

Obama cries and calls foul when someone calls him by his full name (I remember my friend Frank kicked a guy's ass who kept calling him by his real name, Francis. He didn't run to his mommy, who then called the boy's parents to instruct them to not call their son by his given name. No. He fought back. Obama cried to his mommy, only this time the media played mommy).

As for Hillary, I know she's tough because she's like a lot of smart, talented women who put aside their own aspirations for their husband and family, only to wait until it's their turn.

That means a lot to me.

Likewise, I know she's had to put up with a lot of sh*t and she fought through it with good humor and charm.

Moreover, she's a hawk.

Posted by profwilliams | March 10, 2008 11:52 AM

"Bush acted like the winner "

Bush also acted like the winner the night of the 2000 election, sitting back in his chair, as relaxed as anyone I've ever seen, with a big grin on his face. At the time I thought wow - he is oddly confident for so early in the evening.

And Gore did wimp out. I would have loved to see the entire recount - despite its cost to tax payers. It was probably the only time in my lifetime to actually see a presidential election recount. History acted out right in front of us.

As far as this election goes who cares what Johnnie C is up to, who cares who likes who or what SNL does. We get one day and one vote, I?m excited to see the results.

Was your "friend" in the movi.. err, service prof?
At least he didn't kill him, lol.

Posted by Y.A.Duck | March 10, 2008 12:04 PM

Nah, Frankie actually was about 15 or 16 at the time.

Back then, kids would fight, settle it and be friends.

Obama didn't come from that world. And I've yet to hear him describe how he fought back. Instead, he turned to drugs and alcohol to "push questions of who I was out of my mind."

Many of those questions, I'm sure came from other kids.

But the name thing was it for me.

Soft.

Posted by profwilliams | March 10, 2008 12:15 PM

Interestingly, both of the "soft" guys went to Vietnam (though Gore was somewhat insulated) even though it is quite apparent that both could have used conections to get out of it.
It is inexplicable to me why Kerry did not go harder at the low-lives who swifted him, and that failure alone is enough to convince me that he was not presidential material. But "soft", no, I don't think so.
There are some who would suggest that Gore stepped away in order to spare the country a more divisive exercise, especially given the reality that the Court was likely to find, as it did, for his opponent. Only Gore knows if that was really the reason but again, "soft", no, I don't think so.
Obama's folks call foul because using the middle name is such an obvious ploy to cast the dreaded Muslim shadow, and the folks who do it, while speaking of "soft" don't even have the stones to admit that they're playing that game. Otherwise, we would see all the candidates, all through this process, referred to with "all" of their names. But we don't. Just the guy with the "funny" one. Such disingenousness makes a lot of others pretty sick. Maybe Barack would like to kick someone's ass, like your friend Frank, but that sort of thing is frowned upon once you pass the age of 15 or so.
Yes, I think Hillary's pretty tough, but not because she's a "hawk". Lots of people are hawkish when they themselves, as well as no one they know, has to go into the fire.

Posted by croiagusanam | March 10, 2008 12:21 PM

Since we are speaking of schoolyard brawls, I think if the three candidates squared off, McCain would surely win. The second scrappiest would have to be Hillary. Old Barack Hussein looks like he cried "Uncle" alot as a kid.

Posted by realistic | March 10, 2008 12:28 PM

I defined soft my way.

Perhaps "politically soft" may be easier for you to understand.

Obviously Kerry's and Gore's military time show otherwise.

But my point is political. And both were soft.

So while fighting is not in vogue past age 15. Aren't the Dems the ones screaming about "fighting" for everything (lower taxes, the middle class, etc.).

That's the point here.

Old Obama chose to run to mommy instead of "fighting" with words, good humor or charm.

Soft.

(Remember, Hillary's " You know, I'm not sittin' here some little woman standin' by my man..." Not Soft.)

Is Naomi Wolfe gonna have Obambi in Argyle?

Posted by profwilliams | March 10, 2008 12:31 PM

(Don't call me Hussein... I'm gonna go tell Brian Williams... Or the NY Times... Or Jonathan Alter... They'll fix your wagon!)

Posted by profwilliams | March 10, 2008 12:37 PM

McCain is losing spine too, Professor W., seeking the endosements of those who badmouthed him in 2000 and 2004.

Posted by J Perlstein | March 10, 2008 12:38 PM

"Politically soft" is not only easier to understand, it is more to the point you were trying to make. Clarity is a good thing. Don't be afraid of it. Especially if you are going to link Obama's (political?) softness to Frank's ass-kicking exploits.
I don't know how Obama will "fight" if he should get the nod. To this point, he seems to be doing fine, so he may not feel the need to start slugging just yet. We'll see what happens.
In the meantime, "tough" is nice, but tought without good sense, intelligence, and courage is just, well, Frank.

Posted by croiagusanam | March 10, 2008 12:38 PM

That's my point here, I don't want to wait to discover if he's not soft.

His reaction to adversity is telling.

As for Frank. The kid stopped making fun of him.

Remember, the only way to beat a bully is to beat the bully. This might be an ass-kicking or it might be simply standing up to him to show that you won't run.

Going to speak to the bully's parents rarely works.

(So while "politically soft" may be easier for you to understand. I DO think he's soft.... all over.)

Posted by profwilliams | March 10, 2008 12:50 PM

So... aside from one's opinions of the candidates, d'ya think should there be a do-over for MI and FL, or not?

Posted by Kay | March 10, 2008 12:53 PM

the Clintonistas will do everything to win...they have no scruples or principles...they will cheat, lie and destroy everyone who they think is an obstacle. Barat better plan to get down and dirty

Posted by Iceman | March 10, 2008 12:55 PM

While Obama is not my man in this election, I don't see where he is facing "adversity" (he is ahead in delegate count and appears to be headed for the nomination), nor do I see him "reacting" in poor fashion. He has his people put things out there, as all politicos do, and he moves on. If anything, he has shown a marked lack of pique, unlike both McCain and Clinton.
I guess we all see what we want to see.

Posted by croiagusanam | March 10, 2008 12:55 PM

"Barat.."

Who's Barat? Is that an Obama ticket with Borat as the VP candidate? We can only hope!

Posted by Miss Martta | March 10, 2008 1:00 PM

Well, that's my point. Here adversity was someone having the gall (for obvious reasons) to speak the man's middle name.

His reaction to this adversity, to cry Uncle!

So, if he can't handle an American calling him his name, how's he gonna deal with Hugo calling him the Devil? Wait. Right. He wouldn't call him the Devil.

Because when Obama's Pres. all the world will love us.... And we won't have such silly discussions.

Posted by profwilliams | March 10, 2008 1:07 PM

As for FL. and MI.

A redo seems in order.

But if they just forgot about them because they didn't follow the rules, I don't have a problem with that either. They will be (obviously) allowed to vote in the General Election so their "rights" won't be violated.

Posted by profwilliams | March 10, 2008 1:15 PM

A redo for Michigan and Florida is fine as long as the elections are paid for by either public funds or by the national party. I get nervous when Clinton supporters like Corzine and Rendell want to start raising money for this purpose. I get VERY nervous. The Clintons will do ANYTHING to win.

Posted by Jerzee Giant | March 10, 2008 1:22 PM

I'm shocked that folks actually say stuff like, they'll do anything to win.

Duh...

What's the alternative? Play to lose?

I guess those who repeat this think they'll do illegal stuff. As if no one is watching....

Dumb.

I want someone who will "do anything" to win. This is America remember, we like winners!! (But then again around these parts, we give kids trophies who just show up...).

But I guess his holiness Obama will only do what he "feels" he needs to do to win. Just don't call him names...

Meaning... He won't fight.

Because he's soft.

Posted by profwilliams | March 10, 2008 1:28 PM

I'm of the opinion that if the DNC originally said, "No Primary Votes For You!" then they shouldn't go back now. You know, make a decision, and then stick to it!

Seems to me that if the DNC didn't have this confusing setup of awarding proportionate delegates then maybe we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Posted by Kay | March 10, 2008 1:44 PM

Oh, but Kay, those voters will be disenfranchised... What message will this be for 1) the kids who are voting for the first time, or 2) people who are disillusioned with the "old way" of politics, or 3) the rest of the world!!

Who cares.

You're point it right.

But the Dems will try to be all things to all people, and make no one happy.

Posted by profwilliams | March 10, 2008 1:51 PM

Psh! Disenfranchised!?! Then they shouldn't have moved up the primary in the first place - it's their own fault. For heaven's sake. I need a nap now.

Posted by Kay | March 10, 2008 2:20 PM

Why, in a post that already wasn't either terribly relevant or even solidly rooted in discernible fact, the seemingly totally gratuitous reference to Steve Adubato?

I can only conclude that this shining example of bland, well-connected shallowness is a dear, dear friend of at least one of the Baristas. But he generally says nothing, either in print or on the tube, unheard before or that one wouldn't realize for himself after a moment's thought, and I much hope that Baristaville harbors "pundits" of more genuine depth than he ever offers up.

Let's see if Corzine can top this!

ALBANY - Gov. Eliot Spitzer has informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, an administration official said this morning.

As for Steve A., one can just assume that he (and his wife) represent us. For
