Lapdancing 101?

Monday, March 17, 2008

The excitement never ends at Montclair State. First there was all that newspaper hullabaloo, and now you've got naked women and lap dancing. Maybe the students are just learning what it takes to be governor? From The Record...

The campus shock jock whose Montclair State University radio show was pulled from the air this week — after a parent complained it featured naked women and lap dances — said Saturday he will continue broadcasting his Howard Stern-style program via the Web.

The disc jockey, a Montclair State student who goes by the name Randy Rogers, said it was unfair of campus officials to cancel his show, adding that the "lap dancer" was actually one of the show's co-hosts, a 19-year-old exotic dancer named Kelsey, who does not attend the school.

"Basically, it was an angry mother's first chance to lash out at her daughter's choices, which she did not like," said Rogers, 21, of Ringwood, who asked that his real surname be withheld.

Kelsey, who declined to give her surname, lives with Rogers and works at a strip club, she said Saturday. She was known on the radio show as "Mistress Tori."

Wait, hold the phone. Randy Rogers (I just like saying that) says the gal was wearing a bikini. Let's go to the videotape...

The university began an investigation into a February broadcast that apparently included raunchy videos on the Web depicting a man writing Rogers' initials in whipped cream on the body of a naked woman in what appears to be the FM radio station's studio.

Minnie Ho, a spokeswoman for the university said Saturday that campus officials were continuing to investigate the incident to "determine who was at the station during this incident, whether they were students and whether they violated the guidelines of the Student Government Association or any FCC violations."

Damn, they didn't get down like that when I went to school there... :-(

Could they not have found a spokesperson not named "Ho" to represent them on this occasion?

LOL! Beat me to that one, cro... :)

And the idea of "naked women on the radio" appeals to a certain fourth-dimensional side of my somewhat warped but always creative intellect. Alison Steele comes to mind...

I have a kid in college and accept they're going to do all sorts of things I may disapprove of (hey that's part of growing up). But I do draw the line at the raunchy stuff being on a college sponsored radio station. I don't want my tuition dollars going towards supporting that. Let the kids look a little farther for their sleaze.

I used to manage that radio station about 15 years ago. Wow how times have changed.

Hijinks like this are part of radio is general and why college radio should be held to any other standard is beyond me. If they broke FCC rules, then they should be penalized.

And to the mother: Your kid is in college now, cut the cord.

I remember in my days when my college radio station decided to use the Hudson River as its broadcast antenna. We were heard all the way in Boston. Of course, now they are banded from having a station that is powerful enough to penetrate more than 3 blocks in any direction.

I think I'd rather my kid was fooling around in a radio station with a couple of scantily clad women than taking massive bong hits in some dark, dingy dorm room.

I think the DJ hit it right on the head when he said, "Basically, it was an angry mother's first chance to lash out at her daughter's choices."

It sounds like the mom had just found out that her little baby has found one of the easier (legal) ways to pay her way through college and is attacking the one thing that she may have a chance at winning.

I can tell you that getting a lap dance on air is not against FCC regs (unless they describe it using those naughty, naughty words you aren't allowed to say on the air), but it probably is against station regs. My own college radio-show got a talking to back in the day for playing a Salt 'n Peppa song as a gag because, while not using sexually explicit language, still implied sexually explicit content.

(but, they were OK with all the metal and hardcore punk music so long as we bleeped the swears)

GMG: Salt 'n Peppa's "Push it"?

(Unfortunately, I'm stuck on a pc and not armed with my mac so no link to the youtube, although I'm watching it.... "This dance is only for the sexy people...Oh.. baby baby...")

Prof,

Honestly, I don't remember if it was "Push It" or "Shoop."

We were trying to do a bit on hackey radio by emulating some of the hackier things we've ever heard, but "messing it up" by using audio drops and samples that were borderline FCC no-nos. We used the S&P song on the first night of the bit and were told to stop immediately.

Take it off the campus Randy...
You've got an easy, built in audience there and you know it...
It's not appropriate for a school.
Work for it... like all the other shock jocks out there...Montclair State is not MTV programing waiting for your over played "genius".
