More Montclair Teens Could Face Charges

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

When we first heard the horrible account of a 16-year-old girl allegedly sexually assaulted by fellow classmates from Montclair High, three suspects had been arrested. Now the Essex County Prosecutor's Office says there may have been eight or more students, including girls, who witnessed the incident. The alleged assaults appear to have taken place in several rooms of the home of 18-year-old Romal Roberts. It is not yet known if drugs were involved.

Police confiscated several cell phones and other evidence from the crime scene, which may contain video of the assault. The prosecutor's office spokesperson, Paul Loriquet, admitted that the witnesses could face charges. He also stated although the medical reports are still being studied, he believes the victim, although a special ed student, does not suffer from a mental disability.

In the complaint filed against Roberts, there were multiple charges of aggravated sexual assault involving forced oral sex, intercourse, and anal penetration with a stick. Each first degree charge carries a sentence of up to 15 years. Today, Roberts, whom neighbors described as a "stand up kid" who helped adults shovel snow, entered a plea of not guilty.

Maybe this was some kind of 'initiation' that got way, way out of hand.

Roberts' second lawyer, public defender Bill Cucco interjected, "Judge, he's limited."

Is this legal ease for he's in special ed too or as they called the girl in the GR case, mentally defective?

Well, we can only hope that these retards took cell phone photos and videos of their heinous acts - it will be so much easier to convict them that way. Enjoy the broomsticks in prison lads.

Jesus... Words fail.

I really, really, really wish that this would turn out to be not true. But, if it is... just... holy crap.

What would make someone think that this is acceptable human behavior to the point where they would video it for any purpose other than immediately presenting it to the police?

I'm with Ackme on this one. To paraphrase a headline from the Post, they hung themselves by their own petard.

Let's just hope and pray that if they are found guilty, we get a take no prisoners-type judge on the bench.

People video tape everything. A quick google search and I found all kinds of videos that mimic this behavior - being made by adults and posted online on free to access sites. I could have viewed hours of that gunk and never been asked for a credit card or to verify my age.

The article said he shoveled snow for his neighbors.....he must just be misunderstood.

Ted Bundy worked on a suicide hotline, John Wayne Gacy entertained kids in the hospital with his clown act, I'm sure I can find other examples. People can always "seem" nice on the outside.

If there was video someone has undoubtedly posted it on You Tube by now. Sick.

Watching American Idol with young kids last night, Fox runs a promo for the truth/lying show where the focal point of the whole spot is some guy being asked "Have you ever had sex with one of your wife's friends?" And he shift's nervously in his chair. What fun. What entertainment for the whole family.

It's some fked up culture we are raising our kids in. Sex tapes by Paris, Amy Fisher, a rapper urinating on an underage girl, and on and on and on. And we are all shocked - SHOCKED - when a bunch of kids think sex is a spectator sport to be videotaped on their phones and laughed over.

This is truly hideous and bleak.

The expression, by the way, is to hoist oneself on one's own petard.

The really chilling thing is that many of the kids that do this kind of stuff don't think there is anything wrong with it. They probably think it's funny.

It must have been a scene from one of H. Bosch's paintings over at that 'house'.

God help us all.

They should try the 16 year olds as adults, and if they are found guilty, they should sentence them as adults.

MellonBrush says, "The really chilling thing is that many of the kids that do this kind of stuff don't think there is anything wrong with it. They probably think it's funny."

I agree...and frankly I do think the "boys" of Glen Ridge were operating under that same belief. And yes, they do need to be tried as adults.

OK, I can understand the the DA's office wants to say they have their guy, but what is the point of the 5 foot mugshot?

Posted by Spicoli | March 12, 2008 5:18 PM

Ha! I didn't notice that Hartnett is the one standing next to the photo. Joey H is takin' names and crackin' skulls!!

Posted by Spicoli | March 12, 2008 5:21 PM

Joe is making sure that our money is spent wisely.

They really needed a 5ft mugshot, or maybe a friend runs a copier store .

Probably the same guy that made the green "Perkins Pancake House" sign that adorns 205 Claremont.

Posted by Curmudgeon | March 12, 2008 5:39 PM

Does that mean that they're serving breakfast at 205?

Parents - If your Montclair school kids bring this up, and they will, you can use it as an opportunity to tell them do the right thing and not watch and let a something wrong happen just because of peer pressure or because you are afraid of speaking up. You can leave and call the police. Some one should have in this case, if there were witnesses.

Montclair, you now get to be the new Glen Ridge!

What is it with spoiled rich kids assaulting special ed kids? And broomsticks in the ass??? With an infinite number of choices at that age how do these young, privileged, coddled children end up thinking that putting objects in the ass of a "slow" child is the best choice to make at that moment?

And if there are any parents looking for advice on what to say to their own little Trevor or Tristan, please see the comment above mine. The kids that just watched (or maybe watched and took pictures/video) are no less guilty than the one whose hand was on the broomstick.

Eattherich: In the latest case, the perps were far from rich.

The supposed 5 ft mugshot may just be the perspective of the photograph and creates the illusion of a large mugshot.
