In a national survey, Newark was found to have the lowest prices for gas. Meanwhile, commenters at NJ.com are already saying they can do better in Roselle Park. Do you drive out of your way for a good price and if so, where?

I usually buy gas wherever I am when I need it, but I avoid DELTA brand because it's sub-par. Their Premium is equal to other brands mid-grade and their mid-grade is equal to others regular and their regular is recycled puke with terpintine added. :)
Certainly do not go much outta my way, if at all. Usually buy Gulf, Exxon, Shell, BP/Amoco / Sunoco.
Have to buy Premium, it's a big V-8.
I've never had a problem with the Delta gas. I patronize the station across from the Clifton Home Depot. At Costco, regular gas is $2.93/gal.
I patronize the Costco gas station as well when I am in the area. I (usually) don't drive out of my way for cheap fuel.
Sandy, where did you get your research on Delta? Just curious.
Costco is great for the car.
My bike only holds 1.9 gallons, so anywhere is fine for that. 80+mpg baby!
Potential danger? Wow. I'm sure Corey Booker wouldn't be too thrilled to read this statement. All towns/cities -- even those blessed with lots of wealth have "dangerous" areas. Sure, Newark has lots of problems but stats show that things are improving there. But driving to find cheap gas is nut.

I buy Delta gas all the time. How exactly is it "sub-par"?
I wouldn't drive for cheap gas, but I'm in Newark a few times a week for work and always fill up while I'm there. Definitely cheaper and generally more courteous.
The key to gasoline lies in the secret additives (whose contents are closely guarded by oil companies), since all gas comes out of the refinery basically the same before it "becomes" Exxon, Shell, Lukoil, etc. Sandy has obviously noticed that his V-8 doesn't run too well with Delta in it.
For a long time, I felt the same way regarding my '57 Ford hardtop convertible, which I had for about 17 years. It was Shell (with "Platformate," whatever that really is) or nothing locally, since with everything else I got incessant engine "knock" like someone who had to pee badly demanding my restroom stall, and rarely did that jewel of a car ever even cross the Hudson.
Modern cars aren't that sensitive, I think. I'd bet most people who got their licenses in the last 10-15 years don't know what "knocking" is, or ever experienced summertime vapor lock. They've certainly never had to buy Super (or "Hi-Test") and only Super.
Oh, and gas is generally cheaper in Monmouth County than in Essex. Places in Millburn and Livingston were getting $3.05-3.09 this past weekend, along Rte. 36 off the GSP south to Sandy Hook gas in general was $2.93.
"generally more courteous"? In Newark?
So, I just went to check it out and here's the video.
(It's like the 50's all over again in Newark. Who knew?)
Prof, I have no idea how you obtained video footage of me as I was buying gas in Newark. Please cease and desist before I am forced to notify the proper authorities.
too dangerous to go to Newark? Girls getting raped near MHS and Caldwell Pizzeria's getting torched. Please!!!
There are few benefits(benefit of doubt here,) in Delta. Delta never touts its fuel, only it's price! There is a reason!! You come for the price, and they know that. Now, if you are driving a 4 Cyl compact it will do fine for you. But if you are driving a Turbo Charged, a Supercharged car or a V-8 engine car or a large V-8 (like a Corvette, or Mustang GT) or Jaguar V8, BMW V-8, Mercedes V-8, Cadillac V-8, Lincoln V8, Buick V-8, Mercury V-8 or similiar, you will build up sludge in your engine that will rob your engine of peak performance, and can (and will) cause engine troubles before 55,000 miles, in many cases.
These B-league brands are not cheaper because they love you, they are cheaper because they are CHEAPER quality, so they reatil (and wholesale) cheaper.
If you drive a small car with a 4 Cyl. you can buy it & will NEVER notice any differance. If you drive a High Performance car, or a V8 you will.
It depends upon the engine. I drive a Lincoln Town Car and it's a V-8, but... it's a low compression V-8, with just 239 horsepower. I can get good results with regular fuel. My Wife drives a Jeep Cherokee Limited and it's got a bigger V-8 than my Lincoln does AND is 4 wheel drive. Put Regular (or Delta) into it and you'll not only feel the differance you'll HEAR the differance.
But, put Premium Sunoco in the Jeep and she'll run rings around the Lincoln !
It doesn't depend so much on the # of cylinders as it does depend upon the type of engine. I put the Medium (or mid-grade) Delta in my Lincoln and it ran horrible after just 2 miles. I then filled it with Getty Premium and in less than a mile she was great, again. Luckily, I only put in 8 gallons of the Delta, and then topped off with 14 Gallons of the Getty Premium.
Jeep Cherokee Limite ALWAYS gets premium, or it complains ! :)
The Gulf station on Valley up near Rt.3 usually has a decent price on regular; often 5-10 cents less than those I see elsewhere.
As you're coming in to Newark off of Rt. 21 South, just as the highway part ends is another cheap Gulf station. I always go there when I'm in the area.
Thanks for the additive info. I figgered they weren't cheaper just because they don't have a huge national ad budget but was never quite sure why.
Yep, 4-cyl Civic here. No worries I guess.
Can't find anything on the Net that shows what gas has what additives. That'd make things too easy.
Cathar, your post made me nostalgic for my '66 Skylark. Boy did he ping if he got less than 92 octane!!
BTW, not that you care, but Voronco gas and POWER Gas are also Luke Oil, which is a Russian oil company
My first thought: Is the potential danger worth the pennies saved?
And really, driving miles for "cheap" gas doesn't make a lot of sense.
Me? I drive a small car with great gas mileage so I don't go crazy searching.
