NJ May Become The Buckle-Up State

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

It's amazing how near-death experiences can change one's view of the world. Governor Jon Corzine, unofficial poster boy for seatbelt usage, will be considering whether wearing seatbelt should be obligatory for adult passengers in the back seat. From NJ.com:

According to a survey conducted during a seat belt advocacy campaign last year, the statewide seat belt usage rate stands at a record 91.4 percent.

Under the law, however, adult passengers in the rear seats of an automobile are not required to wear seat belts. A bill to require all passengers to wear them was approved recently by the Assembly, but hasn't received Senate consideration.

Under the Assembly-passed bill, failure to wear a seat belt would be considered a primary offense, meaning a law enforcement officer could stop a vehicle and issue a ticket to the driver for any passenger not wearing a seat belt.

And how long before there are laws about these passengers?

I wonder how many people are going to be pulled over because their back seats only have lap-belts.

This is one of those common sense things that really doesn't need to be a law (other than Darwin's). But, I guess ticket revenue could be used as another way to chip away at the state debt. :-)

Yesterday, I opined that this was clearly a slow news week, and no items on this site since have changed my mind.

In response, in fact, Baristanet readers seem to have also deemed it a slow posting week.

Is the head nanny going require handwashing next? Dr.'s say this is the main cause of the spread of"the flu."

What about obesity?

Save us bearded nanny!

Prof, since you claim to be a pedagogue of some kind, couldn't you have whipped your post above into some semblance of grammatical shape before posting it?

Posted by cathar | March 26, 2008 11:52 AM

Say "Naaaaaah!" to nannies!

There was an armed robbery in Montclair early Tuesday morning at a gas station on Blfd ave.

2 boys were arrested for the vandalism @ the Watchung NJT station.

Those two incidents, MellonBrush, surely merit at least one item here. (Two if it's a slow news week!)

F#@@$ing Corzine! Why can't he work on solving the tough problems rather than solving the non problems.

Posted by walleroo | March 26, 2008 12:04 PM

Smoke and mirrors, Walleroo, smoke and mirrors.

I'm amazed that people are still talking on handheld cel phones while they drive. I counted about half a dozen within a 20 minute period at the intersection of Roseland Avenue and Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell. These ignoramuses need more than a nanny. They need a kick in the ass.

cathar,

I could have, but as I sometimes post from my blackberry, every now and then a mistake is sure to occur (and some even when I post via computer).

But remember, a slip of the old pinky is fine. It's the consistent and flagrant misuse of grammar that is the problem. (Some seem to think I go nuts over any typo, ah, no.)

The point is to try to write correctly and not in some teenaged "text-speech."

I hope this is the last time I have to clarify my grammatical feelings...

And I hope the Bearded wonder will forgive me.

That kid in Caldwell sold me some of his pellet guns to pay of the $60K he has to pay. I'm going to start shooting cell phone yappers at random. To remain non-discriminatory, I'll also shoot the blue tooth headset people too. For one minute - just shut up.

enough please, liberal democrats...will you stop trying to regulate everything about our lives. Please let adults make their own decisions. No, Jon, Barack Hussein, Hillary et al, you're not smarter than all of us or know what's best for all of us so butt out of trying to run our lives from Washington or Trenton.

Posted by Iceman | March 26, 2008 1:27 PM

Prof, despite your efforts at back-pedaling, even your day-to-day posts from a "real" computer" seem a general affront to English grammar and spelling. It oft seems to me you're, so to speak, "poly-pinkied."

Posted by cathar | March 26, 2008 2:06 PM

Please, oh please, let the Iceman drink, use several cel phones at once, not buckle up and also run through stop signs while he drives.

Posted by Spot The Looney | March 26, 2008 2:11 PM

"... not buckle up and also run through stop signs while he drives."

Like Corzine?

Posted by Miss Martta | March 26, 2008 2:20 PM

Seat belt use highlights how many people, left to their own devices, will make bad decisions. Seat belt legislation has been extremely effective in increasing use, and as a result has saved a many lives over the years. Sometimes a nanny is not a bad thing. Especially if she is a hot Swedish au pair with big cans. Not that I think Corzine is hot. Or Swedish.

It also saves us all on our insurance since less money is spent on medical bills. Or maybe it just makes the insurance company more money, but I'd like to think they pass a little bit of the savings on to us, naive that I am.

Ice,

Yeah, those pesky Dems/Liberals are the only ones trying to interfere with individual liberties...

Stupid Lefties are telling me I have to wear a seat belt in the backseat of the car while I drive to my friends' same-sex marriage that the Right fought so hard to make sure they had a right to... because, the Right is all about the rights of an individual.

...Didn't we already have this pointless "us/them" conversation?

... stupid PC. Sorry about the double post.

Posted by Generically named Mike | March 26, 2008 2:57 PM

It's kinda boring on here today...all we can do is discuss Corzine and his seatbelt or lack thereof? We need a new scandal.

Posted by Miss Martta | March 26, 2008 2:59 PM

cathar,

Just cause you say it, don't mean it's true friend.

But how about this: you point out my every mistake and I'll keep on makin' em.

That way, you'll be sure to have something to do on "slow news" days here at Baristanet.

"I counted about half a dozen within a 20 minute period at the intersection of Roseland Avenue and Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell."

Spot- how many of them were police officers? Just curious.

Posted by mClair | March 26, 2008 3:15 PM

mClair, you ask how many were cops. Well, if they were plainclothes officers, then I wouldn't be able to tell. So, none of them were cops in cop cars. Mostly upper-crusty people in luxury SUVs. Hogs all around. Oink oink.

its funny that there is a law about wearing a seatbelt. My girlfriend's car gives you an annoying beeping sound if you dont buckle up. She would rather plug the passengers belt into her cradle than to put her own on. If she gets into an accident, her insurance pays for it, not the taxpayers. Corzine should ban other things that he is the poster boy for. Like ungroomed beards. And Ive seen some pics of him smiling with spinach on his teeth. for Shame!

Posted by jimmytown | March 26, 2008 4:26 PM

jimmy, if your girlfriend gets into this hypothetical accident, I assume from your post that she paid for the cops, fire and ambulance.....

Oh, wait. I paid for it with my tax dollars..

Or does your insurance cover that too?

OPEN LETTER TO CATHAR AND THE PROFESSOR-

Here's an idea. If you want to correct grammar, go teach 3rd grade english. In a blog, or open forum, I say treat it like the young kids treat text messages. "if you can understand it, its ok"

Posted by jimmytown | March 26, 2008 4:39 PM

jimmy,

Actually, I corrected your silly idea that your girlfriend's hypothetical accident doesn't cost the taxpayers any money.

As for grammar, you can write as you like. But I judge people by how the write and speak. (Yes. I judge people!).

So if you want to write with a disregard for grammar because this is a "blog, or open forum" go ahead.

Just don't cry when I choose to comment. Or is that not allowed?

And just where are all those rules anyway?

ou812?

Posted by profwilliams | March 26, 2008 4:48 PM

Yeah, it's dullsville these days. Thank God for Obama Girl!

Posted by walleroo | March 26, 2008 4:50 PM

""... not buckle up and also run through stop signs while he drives."

Like Corzine?"

Actually, Jon C. wasn't driving. He was a passenger. My request for special dispensation was for Iceman to DRIVE in a reckless manner. G'head.

point taken!

Posted by jimmytown | March 26, 2008 5:07 PM

and nobody saw that the 2 dogs were seated in a hearse?
