R.I.P. Pete Montan

Saturday, March 15, 2008

Baristanet received several emails about local Peter Montan's death, a loss felt throughout the community. He was a familiar face at Angelbeck's, in Montclair, where he worked for years, an enjoyed gigging with local bands on drums. We first met Pete when we'd just arrived in Montclair; Pete was the one who hopped out of the antique roadster with a smile to deliver a bottle of champagne to our home. Our condolences to the Montan family. A friend writes:

I was just in Angelbeck's buying wine for dinner, and was saddened to learn that Pete, the red-haired mustached gentleman who worked there, who was unfailingly friendly and helpful, died suddenly of a heart attack. The employees inside the store are understandably sad and are planning a celebration at a local pub to honor Pete's life.

Pete was one of those people who knew a LOT about wine, but never acted like he knew everything about wine, and in a wine store, that's a rare find. I will certainly miss seeing him.

Dear Barista,

Long time friend and Angelbeck's employee (over 25 years there), Peter Montan, died in his home this past weekend. He will be missed...

Mr. Montan and my husband have worked together at the store for the past 6 years, he was a warm and generous person and accomplished musician. The drums were his passion and he could be seen at gigs locally and beyond, I looked forward to him teaching our son to play one day. I know that he is somewhere jamming with the best of them.... Look out John and George, your new drummer is here!

God, another young one gone. So sorry to hear this. I knew Pete from Angelback's and I used to see him at Tierney's now and then. Always a gentleman and all-around nice guy. He will be missed.

I've known Pete since high school, but saw him most at Angelbecks. Used to kid him about his cadillac, that he'd be a great hit in Cuba. A great guy who will sorely be missed. My condolences to his family.

Yes, Pete was a Montclair fixture. All around nice guy who died much too young. We will miss seeing you at Anglebecks and seeing you riding around town in your caddy. See you around, Pete.

So sorry to hear about this. He was always nice when i dealt with him at Angelbecks. Last summer a friend of mine took me to a blues bar in Bloomfield (or was it Orange), and there he was playing drums. He sure knew what he was doing - not flashy, just real tasteful and tight.

I had first met Peter in the late '70's and had worked together with him for many years at Angelbeck's wine store in Upper Montclair. Peter and I also spent a lot of time together back then listening to music in Montclair and the surrounding towns as well as several "hot spots" throughout NYC. I enjoyed planning many an evening to see Peter perform in endless clubs and venues always assured to see a great performance by Peter and the other members of the band. Peter played with great zeal and always informed me of the next "gig" he would be playing stating excitedly, "Bobby...Bobby...you gotta come see us at Tierney's tonight" or where ever the performance would be. Peter and I would also enjoy trying new beers and wines together and would often make it a point to get together to enjoy a "special" vintage of some new wine and a bite to eat at a local restaurant. Over time, Peter and I went in different directions with our lives, but the friendship we solidified remained intact. I would periodically stop by the wine store to see Peter, catch up on some town news, and be introduced to a new wine that he thought was especially significant. That old "Bobby...Bobby...ya gotta try this killer Zin" or "Bobby...Bobby...did you hear what happened...? would be characteristic Peter and a greeting I would always expect and cherish. There is actually a lot that I cherished and will miss about Peter - his enthusiasm for life, his youthful persona, his kindness and egalitarian treatment of EVERYONE he met, his positive attitude, his intelligence (Peter was our dictionary at the store), his unpretentiousness, his free flowing laughter, his precise work ethic, his ingenuity, and his ability to adapt to all people and all situations all the time. Basically, I will miss Peter vey much and I regrret having put off one of our informal wine tasting dinners because of time constraints. You see, I always thought that Peter would be there - if it wasn't this week it would be the following week or the week after that when we would get together. It's hard to imagine that such a good guy, my former coworker and great friend is gone. I will certainly miss him very much especially the friendly greeting "Bobby...Bobby...Bobby...
