Scenes From The Barista's Salon Reading

Friday, March 21, 2008

Last night, there was no fear, yoga - or Cathar - present at Madame Barista's reading of her latest novel take on suburban New Jersey. And despite her second-book trepidation, a supportive crowd including some Baristanet regulars (Frank GG, Fran Liscio and Nicky Mesiah) showed up at Cafe Eclectic, before she was inclined to marshall in the self-pity police.

Deb started out with graceful thanks for coming (by reading the blog post about excuses other people had made) and then referencing the blog Stuff White People Like, which has become hugely popular "because people enjoy seeing their own lives held up to such acute ridicule."

Conversations peaked to a high level, as Deb discussed the "literature of place" and the fact that when the first delivery of "Fear and Yoga" arrived, she dashed over to Watchung Booksellers and was delighted to discover it on the front table, keeping company with a book by Philip Roth, the dean of Essex County letters.

Many people in the room had already read her second novel, as well as her 2006 debut "Rattled." Neil Baldwin compared her subject matter to that of Anthony Trollope, who also wrote about his social class. "Fear and Yoga" reminded the head of the English department at MKA of "Bee Season" by Myla Goldberg. Fran Liscio had some good observations too, namely that the female protagonists of both novels -- Nina and Heather -- seemed to be getting punished by the universe for hubris.

For pictorial vignettes of the evening, check out Fran Liscio's slide show and Paul Zalewski's photos here.

Sorry I could not be there but I do plan on reading the book.

BTW, link to Fran's slideshow does not work.

Sorry MM. It's fixed now.

I'll probably wait now until it's remaindered at Borders. (Provided Borders survives, it's for sale.) I never claimed I'd be there, however, nor pre-excused myself.

But you are extremely good at self-marketing, Debbie, I'll grant that.
Even if Neil Baldwin referring to you amd Anthony Trollope together sounds like a (kindly intended, to be sure) stretch. But what then is the "social class" you're writing about? Baristaville is sure not Updike, Cheever, O'Hara or Richard Yates or Ford country.

Personally, I thought the first novel owed something to Grace Metalious, without the sex but with some needed humor.

cathar, I'll grant you that I may not be John Cheever, but why is Baristaville any less worthy of literature than the suburbs of Connecticut?

Wherever people live, there are stories. And the job of novelists is to tell them.

More like F. Scott Fitzgerald's peeps but without the class, perhaps.

Debbie, sorry that I couldn't make it either, but I will enjoy it over the summer, as I did with Rattled. It's on my "School's Out-I Can Read For Pleasure" list.

Thank you, Dog Mom!

Get thee to a bookstore! Sure I work in the publishing industry so I have a vested interest in people buying books (and Border's will survive. More importantly, we have incredible indies here in Montclair, and also in the city -- McNally Robinson or The Corner Bookstore anyone?). That said, I read (and also bought copies for 3 friends and my mother) FEAR/YOGA and loved it. It's really about families (and is spot-on about overextended women), more than social class (that said, it says a lot about society in the most clever manner). It's also very funny. And just for the record, I've never met Debbie (although I enjoy Baristanet). It's a great read.

What about all those OTHER pictures that fellow took on the 18th?

Have you heard Deb read about the line at the cookie store at the Short Hills Mall? If that piece doesn't move you, one way or another, you are, indeed, the unmovable rock.

And speaking of rocks...
Right now I'm carrying that hardcover book and aiming to visit Yogaville at lunch.
