"Smoke Condition" at Verona High School

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

A Verona police dispatcher has just confirmed that students at Verona High School are all outside of the building due to a "smoke condition" at the school.

A tipster had informed us there was an ongoing fire. We'll update when we get more information.

UPDATE: A small roof fire caused by workers who were tarring the flashing at Verona High School led to a complete evacuation of the school. Students are still dispersed throughout different locations of Verona at community centers and other unspecified locations. Traffic is still being diverted away from the area near the school. The fire, reported at 9:21, was put out by firefighters in about 10-15 minutes. It's unclear whether students will be returning today.

It's hard to imagine how workers would have set tar ablaze. That's hard to do, especially when it's below freezing.

They probably had a propane-fueled tar boiler on the roof so that they could make the repairs.

spicoli is right. and because its so cold outside, that flame is running pretty hot

We had "smoke conditions" at MHS all the time but we usually went back to class afterward. Can't say I remember what class it was though.

You must have hung out in the amphitheater (amphitheatre for you Buckley fans), by the auditorium. (At least that was smoky area in the early 70's.)

Oh, and Bobby the crossing cop (best in the world), but if you thought he wasn't a real cop... had a friend that put on a full face mask (they had just been introduced) that looked like Uncle Fester with a gash on the far head, reporting to work at the store he worked for on a Saturday, as a joke.
Bobby was off duty, in civilian clothes and one of the customers. He was also armed and pointed the pistol in no time..."no,no, don't shoot, it's me" as he pulled the mask off.
