Spitzer To Resign Today

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

UPDATE - 11:47 AM: It's over, he's outta here. Eliot Spitzer emerged from his upper east side hideout home for the first time since Monday to hand over his office to David Paterson, who will take over beginning Monday.

Facing mounting pressure to resign or face impeachment for his alleged involvement in an embarrassing, costly, and illegal sex scandal, Governor Elliot Spitzer will (finally) resign today, despite his wife's urging to remain at the helm. From CBS News:

Eliot Spitzer, the 54th governor of the state of New York, will resign Wednesday morning, high-ranking officials tell CBS 2. Lt. Gov. David Paterson will be sworn in later in the day in Albany.

Sources tell CBS 2 HD the governor hoped to use the resignation as a bargaining chip with federal prosecutors to avoid jail time. An announcement was expected some time Wednesday morning.

Despite Spitzer doesn't have the luxury of playing deal or no deal. Experts agree that his involvement in a prostitution ring makes him damaged goods.

"I think his career is politically at an end," noted criminal defense attorney Ronald Fischetti told CBS 2 HD.

Sources tell CBS 2 HD the governor knows this and is using his defense team, led by Michele Hirshman, to leverage his resignation against potential charges he may face.

When asked what the best-case scenario is for Spitzer, Fischetti said, "No charges, absolute resignation and contrition. I think the worst that could happen is a felony plea on a number of charges they could lodge against him."

Spitzer called me late last night seeking advice. Here are excerpts from our conversation:

Eliot: What should I do, walleroo?

walleroo: I don't think you have much choice, Jelly-ot.

Eliot: Really? Should I use my resignation as a bargaining chip?

walleroo: Not a bad idea, Jelly Man. Hey, hold on, I've got another call coming in....

((dial tone))

Gawd, if this doesn't make it Kristen-clear that this "f-ing steamroller" only cares about me! me! me!, I don't know what is.

If he hadn't gotten caught, he'd still be having dalliances with "high-class" hookers.

I hope his wife leaves him and takes the kids and half of the money.

F'ing d'bag.

Why in the WORLD would his wife urge him to stay on as governor? {{{{shakes head}}}}

Posted by Miss Martta | March 12, 2008 9:47 AM

Why would his wife urge him to stay on as Governor? Answer: to keep him out of the house. I think more than anything, she's dreading being stuck at home with the creep.

Posted by complainerpuss | March 12, 2008 9:50 AM

When Spitzer resigns, the wife is no longer First Lady. She becomes just another spouse.

Posted by walleroo | March 12, 2008 9:53 AM

She'll never be just another spouse (providing she stays with the bum). She's got a law degree from an Ivy League school and comes from a good family. She can make it on ehr own just fine.

Spitzer just called again. Excerpts:

walleroo: Hello?

Eliot: Hello?

walleroo: Hello? Is this Jelly Man?

Eliot: walleroo? can you hear me?

walleroo: I can hear you!

Eliot: can you hear me? Hello? Hello?

walleroo: Yo! Jelly! Talk to me.

Eliot: Hello? Hello?

walleroo: Jelly Man, we got a bad line. Call me back...

I think you have the precede to a movie starring Jodie Foster as the ex-wife of shamed guv of NY, played by Brian Dennehy.

Posted by walleroo | March 12, 2008 9:58 AM

I'm sick of this story already.

wallyroo--next time you have the fool on the line, tell him to hurry up and resign and get the hell out of the spotlight so the media can focus on some other groundbreaking topic of tabloid nature. His wife and daughters should be left alone and not be put in the public's eye because of Eliot's jackassian behavior.

Happened to catch the most ridiculous interview on The Today Show--a prostitute and a Hollywood madam interviewed by Meredith. Wow, they really provided a lot of insight, it was both enlightening and profound. Blech--next story, please!

Did anyone catch Chickeze's performance of "She's A Woman" by the Beatles on American Idol, last night.

It was fu*king amaaaazing!

You've got it all wrong, sularu. This is a TERRIFIC story. It's the kind of thing normally you have to go to the movies for -- a fast-rising, high ranking government officials, future presidential candidate, world beater etc etc laid low by his own hubris and gonads. Fabulous stuff. Sleaze on a large canvas. Lord knows life is mainly toil, boredom, heartache. So why do you spurn this gift that has come your way? Come on, get into the spirit of the thing!

Just talked again to Spitzer. Excerpts:

Eliot: Hi walleroo. Ugh, what a headache I have. Can you get me any oxycontin?

walleroo: Jell, dude, that would be abusing my position as world famous brain surgeon. But what we all want to know is, why'd you do it?

Eliot: I was talking to my friend Bill, and he gave me this phone number. I had no idea this girl was going to charge money! I thought she just wanted face time.

walleroo: That's lame. You are a moron. So what are you going to do now?

Eliot: I'm switching to phone sex. It's a lot simpler.

walleroo: No, numbskull, I mean are you going to resign?

Eliot: As governor? Oh, crap, mentally I quit that job months ago.

I think I use one of those radio frequencies to tune in my satellite radio. I haven't listened to regular radio in years, with the exception of 1010 wins.

Spitzer-gate is big fun though.

Yeah, because shame is the reason Spitzer is stepping down.

I like the suggestion from the Daily Show. The Hooker should be at Spitzer's side when he quits.

Oh come on, Spitzer's case isn't comparable to Bill's. Spitzer hired a prostitute, for chrissake. Clinton was the object of a $43 million witch hunt by Republicans who hated him largely because he'd repeatedly outsmarted them.

(And he knew they were out to get him and still did the deed with AN INTERN!! Read the Starr report and I bet you will not even try to defend his sleezy ass-- an ass I voted for twice...)

I just watched Spitzer's statement, and the most appropriate quotation that comes to mind is John F. Kennedy's, when he said of Nixon, after Nixon lost the election for Governor of California in 1962.

"No class."

Posted by Walter Mitty | March 12, 2008 12:22 PM

Did John F. Kennedy say this before or after sleeping with Marylyn Monroe? Or Alicia Darr? Or Angie Dickinson??

Posted by profwilliams | March 12, 2008 12:42 PM

for sure we of a certain generation know that one of the qualities lacking with JFK was class. He was a philandering degenerate who used the White House like Spitzer used the Mayflower.

"for sure we of a certain generation know that one of the qualities lacking with JFK was class. He was a philandering degenerate who used the White House like Spitzer used the Mayflower."

Sure hit a man when he's down. I'll take a philandering JFK or Clinton any day over an idiot Bush.

I saw this on Miami Vice. Spitzer is getting ready to go deep deep undercover. he has to make it look like his a bad boy so he can get some street cred. A year from know, BAM! he's going to blow the lid off the whole drug and prostitution world. Spitzer is like Chuck Norris, except he's more intense.

the bright side is the new governor is legally blind so he can save the taxpayers big bucks by getting the discount hookers with missing teeth, etc

The inability of the right wingers to differeniate between Clinton and Spitzer or Clinton and Vitter or Clinton and Craig is symptomatic of the same weak, illogical and wrong-headed thinking that has brought us every debacle of the Bush Administration. The faulty generalizations, baseless conclusions, and the dictum that "you are either for us or against us" is a shameful stain on our body politic and our culture in general. This is a mindset that precedes political ideology and policy, and ought to be torn out by the root and tossed on the trash heap of history as soon as possible.

How many times does a reasonable person, regardless of political persuasion, have to point out that Bill Clinton did not violate any criminal statute by having sex with a consenting adult? But here we are, a decade later, with people who are still trying to turn what was essentially political theater into a high crime. On the other hand, we have a president who has publicly admitted to committing multiple felonies related to the FISA statute simply becuase he thinks he has a good reason to do it. Where are all the "law and order" types when that comes up? Where are all the people who castigated and condemmed Clinton? They're now out bashing gay people for wanting the same rights that heterosexuals enjoy. They just can't stop throwing stones, no matter how many among them is with sin. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Posted by guido santa | March 12, 2008 2:06 PM

Holy crap...

I actually agree with Guido Santa for about 80 - 90% of his post.

If you take into account that Clinton didn't commit perjury until after he was questioned in a court of law about his White-House romps (which I'm still a bit confused about why that was necessary in the first place), then his record is relatively spotless (pun intended) compared to Spitzer & Craig's less-than-legal sexual deviations and nowhere nearly as immoral as what Bush is constantly pulling (vetoing an anti-torture bill??? C'mon!) .

Posted by Generically named Mike | March 12, 2008 2:20 PM

Guido: Are you conveniently forgetting that Clinton lied to a Grand Jury?

Posted by Miss Martta | March 12, 2008 2:20 PM

Guido, your post makes little sense. (As usual, but still....) Of course, too, you use the opportunity here to sputter irrelevantly about what you perceive as the evils of the Bush administration. (Again as usual, and Guido babes, you are much in need of some new material for your routines in this space, no? Perhaps lasermikey could help you out?)

A reasonable person, and of any political "persuasion," too, would note that the intern-superior relationship between Clinton and Lewinsky unfortunately provided an opportunity for sexual exploitation by the superior of his intern underling. Which Clinton quickly seized on, however starry-eyed Monica may have been about the cad she was fellating. In most offices, such behavior is an absolute no-no. Wisely, people of any political persuasion might suggest.

But in those wonderful days of the Clinton White House, our serially adulterous scum of a then-President first denied the affair (anyway, the episodes) altogether and then caviled endlessly about what it all "meant." Neither morality nor English grammar's finest hour, in any event.

Chilling, too, as possible presaging of a Hillary White House. But in no way analogous to the Vitter, Craig and Spitzer matters at all. For all your verbal floundering, that is.

Posted by cathar | March 12, 2008 2:29 PM

I'm vexed - anonymous gay airport bathroom sex is less politically toxic than banging a few smoking hot hookers. This sends the wrong message to our kids.

Posted by Spicoli | March 12, 2008 2:34 PM

MM,

While I agree that Clinton lied to the grand jury, my question remains: Why was such a thing convened to determine if he was cheating on his wife? The guy didn't break any laws until he was questioned in a court-of-law about something that, while immoral, was not against the law.

I'm not saying that he was right for having the affair or for lying that he did, but one has to concede that the whole investigation was a witch hunt with the intended (and successful) result of tarnishing what was shaping up to be a presidency otherwise marked by mainly good things.

Posted by Generically named Mike | March 12, 2008 2:37 PM

I read the Starr report, prof, and boiled the whole time with rage that $43 million of my money was spent producing it.

Posted by walleroo | March 12, 2008 2:44 PM

Spicoli, I don't know if you got to the web site in time or not (it seems to be shut down how), but few pictured there were absolutely "smoking hot." Your average issue of Maxim is more of a turn-on.

Conversely, even apparently with a spare few grand to spend on hookers, I'd doubt that too many of them would rate Spitzer as terribly attractive either.

Generically named Mike, I respectfully challenge you to name just 10 of those "mainly good things" you seem to believe the ClintonPresidency came up with. And the promulgation of a moral atmosphere where an intern is fair sexual game for her boss should not be one of them. (Nor should the failure of nerve and effort in Serbia and Bosnia.)

Posted by cathar | March 12, 2008 2:53 PM

If Spitzer is so hot, how come he had to pay for sex?

Cathar,

I don?t have a lot of time to spend looking up the exact stats, but here are 3 off the top of my head:

1) A balanced Federal Budget
2) The lowest unemployment in recent history
3) NAFTA (despite its flaws, I am a fan)

I?m sure there are more than what I can remember (bear in mind that I had what seemed like more important things on my mind in the 1990s as I transitioned from middle to high school over those 8 years), but one stat that I did find helps to re-assure my opinion that this was a tarnish-job: His approval ratings.

They were consistently in the high 50s to high 60s, at one point hitting 72%.

Posted by Generically named Mike | March 12, 2008 3:13 PM

Anyway, GNM, the issue is not that he cheated on Hillary but that he did it on the taxpayers' dime and property. I don't think people would have been half as upset if he took her to a motel. And you're right, there's no law against it, it's between a man and his wife.

But Clinton jeopardized the security of the White House because of what he did while on government property. That complicated things.

Posted by Miss Martta | March 12, 2008 3:13 PM

Clinton balanced the budget?

Clinton's first three budgets, released in 1993, 1994, and 1995 left deficits of $241.4 billion, $201.2 billion, and $194 billion. He vetoed the Republicans' budget in 1995 -- a budget that would have cut taxes and been the first to have balanced since 1969.

So he gets credit for just being there when it happened?

Posted by Jon Doh | March 12, 2008 3:32 PM

MM,

From a moral and practical stance, I agree with all of your points above.

I just don't agree with the comparisons being made between Clinton's sexual infraction (low moral character, poor judgment and no taste) and people like Craig or Spitzer (actually broke the law).

Posted by Generically named Mike | March 12, 2008 3:44 PM

What's worse, showing poor moral character in terms of screwing around with a young intern (and I'm definitely not painting her as a saint) in the White House, or screwing a hooker at a hotel (and many people would tell you paying for sex shouldn't be against the law, and isn't in many areas).

And while it was after the fact, perjuring yourself in front of a grand jury must rank higher than paying for sex in terms of breaking the law.

They both are shitty people.

Jon,

As opposed to Bush's budgeting skills which have left us with the largest surplus in American history and secured the futures of Americans for generations to come, right?

Oooohh... wait... that's right.

I'd say that, given how the following prez has performed fiscally, Clinton is due at least some credit.

MB,

Very funny.

Today from MSNBC: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23596092/

"For the month of February alone, the government ran a deficit of $175.6 billion, a record for any single month. That was larger than the shortfall of around $170 billion that economists were expecting."

While not as interesting as Spitzer, it is far more important.

Posted by MMM | March 12, 2008 4:18 PM

MM:

It wasn't a grand jury he lied to, and no, I am not forgetting that. Clinton's crime did not involve prostitution or a sexual act, but rather lying about it. The act itself was legal. Moreover, he was giving testimony in a civil case, not a criminal one. Finally, this civil case did not involve his oath of office or any of his duties or responsibilities as President. He could have been a tire salesman in the same position.

A tire salesman can't order a Federal intelligency agency to do anything, let alone engage in illegal wiretapping. Which, by the way, the FBI admitted to last week when they claimed that the authority granted them under the "PATRIOT" Act and other similar instruments was used against suspects in cases not related to terrorism.

MM:

Also, since you are so concerned about our collective dimes, I hope you are proportionally disgusted and indignant about the billions of dimes being used to shortchange our troops in Iraq for the benefit of the Vice President's blind-trust stock options:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080309/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/iraq_contaminated_water_4

I hear that hypocracy bell ringing again.

Posted by guido santa | March 12, 2008 5:33 PM

So, Guido, I take it that you advocate lying? Is it OK when a liberal lies but not when a conservative lies, is that it? Please clear this up for me.

"I hope you are proportionally disgusted and indignant about the billions of dimes being used to shortchange our troops in Iraq for the benefit of the Vice President's blind-trust stock options."

I am actually in agreement with you on this. I am not a fan of George Bush and Dick Cheney. They have disappointed me and many conservative Americans tremendously.

That being said, a bald-faced liar is a bald-faced liar whichever side he's on.

"As opposed to Bush's budgeting skills which have left us with the largest surplus in American history and secured the futures of Americans for generations to come, right?"

Great counter argument against something I never said, and unfortunatley, I agree with you.

My point was that Clinton shouldn't be credited for a balanced budget that he was forced into kicking and screaming. He VETOED the balnced budget that congress proposed.

Posted by Jon Doh | March 12, 2008 8:04 PM

MM:

Nice try. This isn't the O'Reilly Factor. Don'y try to put me on the defensive by making an accusation that is not reasonably inferrable from my posts on the subject.

You've only proved my point by completely missing the point of my last three posts.

I am getting a little confused with the spouses of some of these men. Our former NJ first lady had to be the only one to say you need to resign and handle your family business. He chose to stay a little while longer. Point is this is bad for Hillary. Looks as if they (certain spouses) like the status as much as the other spouse. Hey,they were not elected because of who they were married to, right!
