Prices Are Not Right

Thursday, March 20, 2008

So you're a reporter with the NY Times assigned to do a story on how inflation affects the average American shopper. Where would you go? Who do you talk to? To Bloomfield's Stop & Shop, of course, to interview three frustrated Bloomfielders. (Larger image of price chart can be found on EcoRealty)

My boyfriend and I were also interviewed for this article, but were cut for whatever reason. Probably because we had no children. But we did give our opinion on how expensive it is to eat healthy versus unhealthy. We buy mostly fruits and vegetables but looking at prices, it would be cheaper to walk out with junk food.

It's not the soaring price of eggs that's got us down.

We're beaten down by the price of a new elementary school, a dog-park that has to be built twice, and yet another consultant to the township.

And here I am, throwing half of my egg away. How wasteful! Screw the cholesterol. I'm gonna start eating yolks again.

I live a couple of blocks away from the Bloomfield Stop and Shop and can't believe that people actually pay the inflated prices there. I've been shopping at Shop Rite since I moved to NJ 20 years ago and I basically buy the same items week after week. The very same items at the Stop and Shop will make my bill $30 to $40 dollars more. I'm always shocked and try to limit the Stop and Shop to emergency trips only. I too have noticed the rise in prices at Shop Rite but they are nothing compared to the Stop and Shop.

I go to S&S for the bakery. The bakery is excellent. Try their cherry pie and/or their blueberry muffins or their fresh baked Italian bread. Their # 1 asile, the fruit & vegis is also very good.
The rest of the food aisles are no match for the West Orange Shop-Right at Essex Green, not the Livingston Shop-Rite which are the best in North Jersey. Their variety is simply astounding !! S&S "deli" is terrible and the meat is worse than terrible! The salmon is okay but twice the price of Shop-Rites, which is a bit better and usually alot fresher.

That S&S is awful. Crappy produce at exorbinant prices. Hell, crappy everything. The meat is awful, who sells red veal?

Meat prices are outrageous. Even though Shoprite has started to deteriorate lately (could they crowd the once-wide aisles anymore?) I'll keep going there.

I prefer Shop Rite but at least Stop and Shop sells Boars Head cold cuts in the deli.

Shop Rite of West Orange has:

Boar's Head
Hansel & Gretal
Land of Lakes Cheese
and Hebrew Nat'l. Kosher
and Italian Spiced Ham.

The Shop-Rite in West Orange is amazing! God, that store should have it's own zip code it's so big. When we lived in Verona, we shopped at Foodtown but I found their selections of things limited, although their fish dept. is decent. For produce, it's King's or Whole Foods.

EVERYTING is more expensive, thanks to rising fuel prices. Wheat products, meat, milk, some fruits, you name it.

The Shop-Rite in West Orange is pretty great, although one has to be really be motivated in order to put up with those check-out lines.

The Whole (paycheck) Foods in W.O. is my personal fave. The salad/hot food/dessert/everything bars are a sight to see. The fresh seafood bar is also pretty spectacular.

SINCE 1992 ive shopped at Nutley Park Shoprite. They are super accomodating, West Orange and the one in West Paterson are good too, but the stores are just too huge and overwhelming. Every so often when we can--we will get one or two "special" items at Whole Foods West Orange--especially when we get the xmas $200 giftcard. THATS a treat...
