The Seinfeld Weight-Loss Plan

Thursday, March 20, 2008

If the upcoming horror of bathing suit season isn't enough to motivate you, maybe this new treat at the Montclair YMCA will. There are now individual TV's on six of the elliptical training machines in the front cardio room. Note: there is a sign-up sheet, so expect some Seinfeld-like clashes about gym TV etiquette.

Meanwhile, maybe you have a suggestion for this reader...

I'm looking for an exercise class that's sort of like the old Jazzercise/aerobics classes of the 80's. I love to dance and a class is a much dancing as I'll ever do. Just thought I'd ask because you always have such helpful suggestions.

These machines fill up fast. I'm not sure how you listen to the TV on them. The other, larger monitors in the room broadcast over FM frequencies.

I get to this room around 5:05 AM and all these machines are usually taken.

It's as though they're trying to make the experience of getting in shape come as close as possible to the experience of lying on the sofa watching TV.

Really. I don't concentrate as well if I'm watching TV. An iPod works better for me.

@MellonBrush
You listen to TV on them by the miracle of headphones that you bring to the gym with you. Or you can select close captions.
@walleroo
Most modern gyms have TVs in cardio rooms. The idea is that watching sports or something interesting motivates you to keep going, sort of like having a personal trainer. There is nothing like watching FOX news commentators to get my blood boiling and my muscles moving!

As far as I know, jazzercise is still alive and well. I know my mom still goes (upstate NY; don't know about NJ).

Just wondering, how did they catch that particular CC for this pic?

"There is nothing like watching FOX news commentators to get my blood boiling and my muscles moving!"

LOL...in that case, I should listen to Air Amerika or Noam Chomsky to get my heart rate up.

I just hope it's really me on that Machine?

This year the "Y" finally produced a Photo ID Card, for my 10 Year old daughter (who is half chinese). For a Year and A Half a Woman there has been telling us the Machine remain inoperable.

Now someone found a Black Teenage Man had stolen my Daughters Identity and was using her Membership. When we asked this Woman, she said it was no concern of hers, and maybe the Man has the same name as my Daughter?

Wow, identity theft at the Y. Who would have thunk it?

When YMCA ID cards are scanned, a full screen photo image of the member is displayed on the computer monitor.

I have a hard time believing that someone didn't notice the discrepancy between the person using the ID and the photo being displayed. But then again, not much surprises me these days.

I cannot stand the sports channels at the Y. They bore me as do the machines, however...And I usually can't hear the news channels.

Looks like I might have to get an Ipod to make the sweat time pass and ignore the banal conversation.

Really, who wants to chat?

I love being on the treadmill when there's a Giants game. There's no better way to watch, except on a DVR -- I can get through an entire football game in 32 minutes.
