If a certain yoga book has people scratching their heads and wondering who Nina Gettleman is based on, a certain soccer book is bound to raise the question: is it Ashley? (Note from the author: it's not.) Montclair author Nancy Star's cleverly-named "Carpool Diem" comes out Thursday and features a deliciously over-the-top soccer coach named Winslow West, who sends take-no-prisoners memos to his girl soccer players and their beleaguered carpooling parents.
Please note the following allowable excuses for missing practice:One: Death
Two: Official Power Team Tourney.
Star will be reading and signing books Thursday, March 13 at Watchung Booksellers. 7 pm.
Another Montclair writer, Karin Abarbanel, is out with a new book called "Birthing the Elephant," which her publisher calls the "What to Expect When You're Expecting" for women entrepeneurs. Abarbanel will read and sign books at Watchung Booksellers on Sunday, March 30 at 7 pm.
Congratulations also to author Valerie Block, whose book, "None of Your Business," has has been optioned for film/TV by Marilyn Agrelo, director/producer of "Mad Hot Ballroom." Her most recent novel, "Don't Make a Scene," came out last summer.

Congrats! Nancy and Valerie were two of my favorite customers when I worked at the shipping shop in upper-Montclair.
Here I am watching the news on TV and up pops an item which sounds like somewhat of a replay of the Glen Ridge incident which led to such unfortunate condemnation of high school jocks in general.
Baristas, I gladly turn this one over to you (since we already hear a fair bit here about "working writers" in Montclair.
The "working" writers of Montclair? You mean, as opposed to the "lazy shiftless" writers of Montclair?
A little restless there, walleroo? How's about YOU take lasernutter up on his offer today of going out for a beer, for me, as a favor?
Even if the lasertwerp were a tenth as dreadful in person as he is in this space, I'd rather be caught at the Emperor's Club with my pants down.
Anyway, I'm too busy forming a new local group. The Supine Writers of Montclair. We're closely aligned with the All But Dissertation Club.
Does that last part translate to: I'm face up about to be loved, and the others (Opra's book club) will discuss it in detail?
Sorry, that was only one "t" in but.
Ugh. Do these soccer mom dramas really represent the "writing" that happens in Montclair???
Here this week we have three grant-winning (and one Pulitzer-winning) writers having readings at Luna Stage and not a peep. But when the owner of this site has a book or one of her buddies, we get multiple news stories.
Nice little club you've got here, girls. :)
