Watchung Station, Trashed Again

Friday, March 14, 2008

Vandals1.jpgVandals2.jpg
After a period of relative peace, the vandals are back, targeting historic Watchung Station again. A tipster writes:
I snapped these earlier this week with my cell camera in the waiting room of the Watchung Station, showing what appears to be the handy work of vandals. Also missing was a picture of a boat that had been screwed into the wall for many years. There's a sign on the platform that says there is video surveillance. Did the video catch the bad guys in action?

UPDATE: Montclair PD is following up on leads. "Police have information regarding the identity and are working to confirm that information. Charges will be filed once identification has been confirmed on all of the suspects,” says Chief of Police David Sabagh.

As of this morning, no repairs had been made. Tipster also sent a photo of a new gang tag, which may be the vandals' calling card...

There are your tax dollars at work.

How much did the useless surveillance camera cost?

Let me guess...17- to 20-year-old demographic at work?

Posted by Miss Martta | March 14, 2008 3:14 PM

17-20 year old demographic with the mindset of a two year old.

Not only have repairs not been made -- but as of THIS MORNING (Friday) the pieces of wood paneling that had been kicked out -- were laying in exactly the same position as they were on TUESDAY. Translation: No one from the town is bothering to even inspect the station and if they are, they certainly don't give a crap about cleaning up the mess or fixing it. Folks -- more than $1 million was spent on this historic restoration! Is the current administration just throwing in the towel and waiting for the May elections for a new team to run the place? And didn't I read somewhere that THERE IS NO VIDEO CAMERA AT THE STATION -- just a sign to scare thw would be vandals off?

Die vandals, die.

Maybe if the trains were allowed to blow their whistles, it might have been able to scare off the hooligans?

Posted by 13%annualtaxhike | March 14, 2008 3:35 PM

Yes, restore the death penalty. Teach this demographic a lesson.

Posted by mother_of_i | March 14, 2008 4:19 PM

A good 'caning' might dissuade these hooligans from further depradations.

Here's a brilliant thought: How about parents acting like parents for a change?

MM,

In a blue moon!

The seas will freeze before this happens.

;-)

Poor misunderstood meanagers.
Crap, I wish I had half of what they have today when I was young.

Posted by Miss Martta | March 14, 2008 4:45 PM

MM,

I'm glad I didn't have what they have today. Most of what they have today is just gussied up crap.

Gaaaaak!

I saw who did it. It was a crazed DeCamp executive trying to drum up more business by making the train stations look like places where one might encounter the 18-20 YO demographic wearing white Yankee hats. It worked for me -- no more train commuting; too scary. Of course, I don't work in New York City, either...

I wish I had the Internet when I was young. I do. I do.

I'm glad I didn't have the Internet when I was a kid. I had too much fun being outside playing with my friends.

44% of all active service personnel in the United States armed forces are between 17 and 23 years old.
Let's be a bit more thoughtful in characterizing a "demographic".

"Police have information regarding the identity and are working to confirm that information. Charges will be filed once identification has been confirmed on all of the suspects,?

There is a camera, it WAS caught on tape, and the tape is being reviewed to identify the kid. Hopefully, if he reads this, he will come in with his parents before the detectives have to go to school to get him. It is only a matter of time.

I thought that camera was not connected to anything? Anyway,it's Friday, if you have it caught on tape, why wait until Monday to get him at school...go get him at home this weekend.

Montclair is so hood. We're definitely catching up to South Central.

How 'bout a lock?

At the Brookdale dog park we had no trouble decreasing nuisance (barking) by locking up in the evening and opening up in the morning.

But at Watchung train station, where the last inbound train is 10:25pm, we decrease nuisance (vandalism of a historic building) with a surveillance camera?

...just guessing that most of the bad actors are there in the evening after the passengers are gone...

Locking the station at night is a good, practical, and inexpensive idea.

Oops! I know, only hit the "post" button one time, you idiot.

The NJT trains need to worry about their doors opening at the wrong places and people falling out before they worry about some wood paneling getting kicked.
