Web Watching At Work

Friday, March 7, 2008

Seen any good online videos at work today? This week, The Wall Street Journal reported companies are just discovering that online video watching at work is lowering productivity and causing bandwidth problems. The folks over at techdirt, however, say preventing employees watching videos is nonsense.

My Ballot Box
How Much Online Video Watching Do You Do On The Job?

As much as possible - my job is so boring!
Whenever I know the boss won't catch me.
Never. I'm too busy and only have time for Baristanet.
Only when it's about singing dogs or cats playing the piano.

From The WSJ:

Worker productivity is being jeopardized as short, often low-quality video clips popularized by YouTube are being joined by better-quality video services with long-form content. According to a study released last month by Nielsen Online, an Internet tracking service owned by Nielsen Co., the heaviest consumption of Internet video is during weekday lunch hours between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., when most people are at work.

Even though I have a ton of things to do at the office today, I can't stop watching this short infomercial:

One of my all time favorites was the Nike netmercial "Terry Tate, Office Linebacker".

It was so funny that I thought I was gonna puke.

I love music videos, esp. ones from the 80s. Visuals are horrible but the song is great!

I use the music on my and my friend?s myspace pages like an ipod. I am much more productive when I can't hear the mindless chatter of my idiot co-workers, who find shock and awe over things like caller ID and commuter traffic. Also they play the same 25 songs over and over from their itunes loud enough to travel over cube walls and as the worst of the collect comes on I also get to hear ? ?good song? followed by raising the volume. It?s making me hate the Beatles, as well as a variety of 60?s artists.

Take away my ability to listen to music via the web and I will lose my mind.

Duh...ever since the advent of the WWW there has been lower productivity in the office. Distractions abound. Figures that the WSJ, with Murdoch at the helm, has to try to stir up a new wacky controversy! Look at the Baristanet comments...I doubt all of the trolls here are unemployed with nothing better to do...then again, maybe that explains a lot...
