Winds Whip Baristaville

Sunday, March 9, 2008

The skies turned blue, sirens filled the night air as the winds howled and branches fell. On Valley Road a huge tree slammed down on two parked cars near Chestnut Street. The power at the Soccer Dome went out with a minute to go during a winter league playoff game between Boro and Man City. (Man City won 6 to 5) How did you survive last night's wild weather?

Did anyone catch the cloud lightening show in the southern skies toward nightfall? Weird stuff.

Now I know what those flashes of light in the clouds were over Newark Airport as I was driving home on the Turnpike last night.

I think your photo is on Valley Road. I passed that scene this morning. Notice the front of the house is in sunlight, facing east.

I slept in a hammock on my porch. Like a baby.

The last time the wind whipped in that circular motion, we had a micro-burst. Last night felt eerily similar.

you're right, YA

I thought of the micro burst as well,, cloud lightening .. wind .. witches flying.
Knew it was serious when I thought I heard a snow plow outside, but then saw it was the town tractor shoveling trees to the side of the road. hmmm I thought we have learned a lesson and started the tree cleaning early... until in the bright sunshine I saw my driveaway was blocked. guess it could of been the wind tho... b/c took a walk later and there were branches and trees everywhere.. huge tree down onto power lines at clinton and eagle rock way.
yup I was sscared for a minute.

I too witnessed the "cloud lightning" over Bloomfield High area It may been " Ball Lightning " with no thunder at all There were lots of transformers blowing up too one on Belleville ave my wind gauge on my roof hit 48 mph top gust an I'm in a valley sort of

Maybe it was just the transformer failures reflecting of the sky clouds mmmmhhhh?

Posted by steamengine759 | March 9, 2008 8:24 PM

I drive up chestnut to valley every time i go to pick up the man, and i did a quadruple take at that house...i wonder...did they wish the tree would of hit the car next to it, since it already had the windshield missing??? Even coming back I had to slow down and look at it again. I'll admit - i was kind of skeered, at one point I thought my windows were going to blow in.

I agree steamengine, I think it was transformers going off. I believe I saw two flashes, one nearer the hs and one up the block on bellville. I was guessing mid 50s on the winds. I believe I'm in your "valley" as my handle might give away.

"I slept in a hammock on my porch. Like a baby."

I slept like a baby, too: every 15 minutes I woke up crying. And, 'Rooski, I thought you were sleeping under porches these days...

I built a small porch that fits under Liz's porch. Sorry Conan, I should have been more explicit. And why is it most people think to sleep like a baby is to sleep well. Surely these people never spent a night with a real baby.

Posted by walleroo | March 10, 2008 9:21 AM

That's why I sleep like the dead because I have no baby

"I built a small porch that fits under Liz's porch."

Is that what is known around here as a porchetta?
