Baristaville's got a number of events going on that make you feel good about having fun.
Hair we go again, it's a St. Baldrick's Day party...As if you needed an excuse to stop in at Tierney's tonight (or get a haircut), David and Caris Drury are inviting you to stop by and support the brave shavees who will take it all off their heads to raise big bucks for pediatric cancer research. This is their seventh annual St. Baldrick's Day fundraiser for CureSearch.
The first time I shaved my head was over nine years ago, when my son William (pictured above) was diagnosed with a Medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor. I took him to the barber when his hair started falling out from the treatments and we both had our heads shaved. He is now a healthy and happy 13 year-old boy, 8 years out of treatment, and each year he insists that he shave my head around St. Patrick's Day.
We have a number of friends from Glen Ridge participating in the event this year. I would like to thank Larry Bullock and John Kelleher for agreeing to do this with me. I think they got jealous of all the admiring looks my bald head has gotten over the years. In addition we have a number of brave and caring young men, friends of Will's, who have volunteered to do this as well: Ethan Collins, Aiden Curtin, and Peter Zazzali. I would encourage you to support any of us by selecting a name on this link.
Alexandra Nagourney, a junior at Glen Ridge High School would like you to dine at Church Street Kitchen, Raymond's, and Fitzgerald's 1928 during World Water Week, March 116-22, and support the UNICEF TAP Project - a nationwide campaign that helps UNICEF provide safe drinking water to children around the world. Alexandra is an official UNICEF/TAP Project volunteer and recruited the three Baristaville restaurants to participate. Customers will be asked to donate a minimum of $1 for the TAP water they would normally get for free.
Baristaville teens Zachary Herring, Alexandra Volcy-de-Nes, and Dylan Plofker want you to put his April 11 fundraiser on your calendar. Zachary and his fellow Montclair High Global Education students have planned some good times at the Van Vleck House and Gardens from 7-10 PM. The event will include a silent auction, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, an Iphone raffle, performance by legendary jazz artist Reggie Workman, as well as a guest DJ.
All proceeds will go towards the non-profit organizations Safe Passage in Guatemala and the Grameen Foundation in Pakistan. Tickets are $40 per person, $60 per couple, or $50 per person at the door. The kids would like to see a full house at the benefit and welcome cash donations or auction items. Questions and reservations: email Zachary at kids4globalcharity@gmail.com.
