A Shot Of Wild Turkey

Friday, April 11, 2008

Wild turkeys are on the move in Baristaville...First, we heard about a sighting yesterday:

Around 8:25am this morning, I was driving down Thomas Street, close to the Glen Ridge-Bloomfield border and had to stop, as three wild turkeys crossed the street in front of me. After fumbling around for a minute, I finally readied my cell phone camera, and snapped the enclosed picture of the turkeys walking up someone's driveway toward the elevated train track. Wierd.

Today at 11:40 am, our feathered friends were in Montclair:

There was a wild turkey on the run crossing Grove Street near Euclid when I was driving in about 20 minutes ago. It was so out of place.

Tell us if they cross your path...

The turkeys around my house knock on the windows with their beaks (very loudly!).....I was worried that they wanted to come in, or want to tell me something....but perhaps they only see their reflections in the glass and are amazed....

We've seen a herd of 7 or 8 up on Lloyd Road a bit south of MKA on several occasions, late afternoons. Close up they are ugly and aggressive but their domesticated cousins are often tasty with swiss cheese and mayo on whole wheat.

Yes, I saw a half dozen of them last year on Afterglow Way...hanging out in someone's driveway. There was this shiny black car parked there...one of the turkeys was fascinated, watching his own reflection in the paint...just kept watching himself for 5 minutes or so....and take a little peck at the car!

R C ...I feel relieved that you think that they are only pecking at their reflection and not wanting to come in, or wanting to tell me something...but maybe they wanted to see what its like to ride in a car! Its so hilarious to see what they used to do at Halloween....they would peck the faces off of everyone's Jack o Lanterns and eat all of the Indian Corn!

I work in wildlife research and we once got a call from a woman who needed to know how to get a wild turkey to leave her car alone. Apparently it was transfixed by its reflection in the front winsheild of her van and wouldn't let anyone else near the car.

Our solution? Water pistol.

But really, I saw them all the time in Rockland County, they love to hang out along the Palisades so I always worried about them.

We have them by our house a lot in Cedar Grove. The other day as I was going out to my car, there were some on the lawn. I thought they would go away from me, but they came right toward me! And they are pretty big.

Next time you see them, say the following out loud: OOOOH...pretty turkeys! 350 for about 3 hours should do it!

Watch 'em run away!

I saw them twice last year within a block of the art museum. I got out of the car to photograph them (13 by my count) but they were very skittish and ran. I guess I'm not shiny enough to intrigue them.

Tang Poohzie, the Original, says that he wishes they would run or waddle to a refuge or Turtle Back Zoo.

Would raptor trust take them?

Tang is returning to his windowsill where he is safe.

Headbonks to all!

Tomorrow is opening day for the Spring Turkey Hunting Season, so I'm not surprised that turkeys have been spotted.

Baristanet readers should be rejoicing over sightings of wild turkeys. It is a conservation and environmental activist success story! The Wild Turkey Restoration Project represents one of the greatest wildlife management success stories in the history of the state. In the mid-1800s, turkeys had disappeared in New Jersey due to habitat changes and over-exploitation. However, in 1977 biologists and technicians began to live-trap and re-locate birds to establish populations in 20 New Jersey counties.

If the turkeys are being hunted, I am wondering if they are safe to eat.
The news that the population is growing is certainly very good news, but I imagine that they since the turkeys are growing in a suburban environment, haven't they been raised on a steady diet of lawn products? Maybe the "Miracle Grow" has something to do with the increase in population.
