Baristaville, Off Your Butts!

walk.jpgToday's sunny weather is perfect for the launch of The American Heart Association's "National Start Walking Day." Can they mobilize an entire nation to get out, get moving, and get fit? They're asking you to put on your sneakers and take a brisk thirty minute walk today - but why not everyday? Heart disease is the #1 killer in the U.S. and physical inactivity doubles the risk of heart disease and stroke.

We've all heard that the health (and green) benefits of walking are huge. Ok, no excuses. Get on it - remember to break a sweat...

Sorry, can't walk, too busy playing tennis.

Just wanted all of you to know that Monday will mark the 66th consecutive year that I have not run in the Boston Marathon.

Posted by Conan | April 16, 2008 12:23 PM

Mark and I played tennis last week and boy were we terrible. I think the couple playing next to us did not enjoy our ball ruining their game every five minutes. I think I'll stick to running, you should all get out and run.

My fiance is actually doing Boston this Monday. It's a big honor since you have to qualify for it.

Missed you at the "Run for Rachel" Sunday, Miss Martta. This year the gift pack even included a nerd hat (sort of like the ones the "Deaniacs" wore to NH 4 years ago) and, appallingly, cotton gloves prominently stamped with the name of Kushner's real estate development firm.

Katie, don't worry about your ball rolling into someone else's court. It happens all the time and to both the best and worst of players. Only cranks would resent tossing a ball back. And only touring pros have ballfolk to retrieve their own errant balls.

Yeah, we did the Cherry Blossom 10K instead because DF has done it every year since its inception. Too bad they scheduled both races on the same day. Sorry I missed the nerd hat.

congrats again, Conan, for keeping the streak alive. Now, where is the barman?

Posted by Iceman | April 16, 2008 1:16 PM

cathar, only my abiding respect for your erudition and writing style stays my hand from some sort of comment about "errant balls".
Expect no such restraint from the hoi polloi, however.

Posted by croiagusanam | April 16, 2008 1:23 PM

We were hoping for a Kramer to come and fetch our balls. Although, that didn't end too well so maybe not...

Hoi Polloi. I had that for lunch today! Grilled chicken over a bed of brown rice, pea pods, and carrots with a nice ginger and soy sauce. Yum.

From your outlook on life, Conan, I took you for a much younger man--about 35 I would've guessed.

Posted by walleroo | April 16, 2008 2:06 PM

It's the construction that has aged him.

Posted by Belletones | April 16, 2008 2:10 PM

MM -- tell BF that if he gets thirsty around the 6-mile marker, go into the "Happy Swallow" on Route 135 in Framingham: coldest beer in New England. (Don't mention my name, though: I think I have a bar tab there from 1987...)

Posted by Conan | April 16, 2008 3:18 PM

LOL! I'll let him know Conan!

Posted by Miss Martta | April 16, 2008 3:23 PM

Thanks, Walleroo, but I have been around since before LaGuardia (the mayor AND the Airport). Although I have been accused (and rightly so) of arrested development and lingering adolescence. (KEGGER AT ICEMAN'S!!!)

Posted by Conan | April 16, 2008 3:25 PM

Gives no meaning to the title of the old Ian & Sylvia song, "Un Canadien Errant," eh, croiagusanam?

The hoi polloi, however, are welcome to their diversions. And according to Obama they include religious espair, nativism, protectionism and passionate gun love.

Posted by cathar | April 16, 2008 3:33 PM

(Should read "gives NEW meaning....," and it's also "despair) with a "d.")

Posted by cathar | April 16, 2008 3:35 PM

"no meaning" and Ian and Sylvia go somewhat hand-in-hand, although if you look up "Meaningless Lyrics by Canadian Folk Singers" in your Funk & Wagnall's, you will see a picture of Gordon Lightfoot.

Is it Patriot's Day already?

Then it must be almost time for Kitty Dukakis Day. Where's the kegger?

Posted by ackme | April 16, 2008 3:51 PM

Arrested development is a prerequisite, as far as I'm concerned.
