Corzine Says He'll Sue NY Over Congestion Pricing

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

The Guv is mad as hell over New York state's proposed congestion pricing scheme which would clobber New Jerseyans with supplementary tolls - up to $4 - if they dare to cross the Hudson. The tolls would have Jersey drivers digging into their wallets at both peak and off-peak hours.

In a Soprano-esque deal, NY says the only way to avoid the NJ surcharge is if Port Authority writes MTA a check for $1 billion! Fuhgeddaboudit! Corzine says it's unfair and outrageous, and NY isn't going to get away with it. The whole story is here.

This from the guy who wanted to raise tolls on NJ roads by 800 percent??

What a jerk.

A bearded jerk.

Ha! He's just upset that HE didn't think of it first.

"complicated payment scheme" indeed!
According to this article, EZ Pass users will pay more during peak hours and less during non-peak, while others would pay $3 at paek hours and $4 during non-peak.
So the others are encouraged to come in during peak hours, when it would seem that that's when you want them out. And of course, screwing EZ Pass users is a terrific idea!
What about New York residents who come into Manhattan from Queens or Brooklyn or the Bronx? Will there be additions to the tolls at the tunnels and bridges? Will currently free bridges like the Brooklyn and the Manhattan and the Williamsburgh become toll bridges?

Maybe he's suing to get NJ in on some of the profits.

I've long said that the only way for "congestion" pricing to have any effect is if the increased revenue was used to increase the mass transit options going into/out-of the city for people who currently don't have a choice other than driving.

(On the surface it is pretty hypocritical, though)

maybe this way state parks will stay open?

HUH? is this governor for real? and no drinking coffee while driving? this guy is not smart.

I am actually For congestion pricing, maybe because I live a train ride away, but less air pollution sounds good to me!

This would have made a good entry yesterday.

I love how states continue to tax commuters who drive, yet they do nothing to improve the (poor) state of public transportation. I'm sure more people would use public transportation if they actually had a good system (more locations, more direct routes, better hours, etc.).

Posted by RaeVen | April 2, 2008 11:55 AM

Yes, they never should have done away with all the streetcars and trolleys.

Bring back Public Service!

He may be a bearded jerk, but he's our bearded jerk!

So was the last guy we elected governor!

I think they should raises taxes on mass transportation to fund the development of better highways into and out of the city. What we need are more tunnels and bridges. Would it be possible to completely cover the Hudson River from Fort Lee to Jersey City and make it a parking lot for commuters? Now we're talking!

Paid for my the Committee to Write In Walleroo.

Charge everyone. I don't care what their plan is, just make it equal for all. Charge the Bronx people and the Brooklyn people - stick some $8 tolls on those borough bridges too. They've gotta go over or across a river too. Don't just discriminate against the Jersey people. Don't be a hater.

As I understand it, the issue is not only the cost but the fact that the Port Authority is being forced to spend the money from the NJ tolls in NY City instead of on whatever project they think is best for the region (such as a new Hudson rail tunnnel which could get people off the roads). Corzine is 100% right to question the fairness of that.

Posted by hooger158 | April 2, 2008 2:49 PM

Corzine and "100% right" should NEVER be in the same sentence.......

Posted by profwilliams | April 2, 2008 2:53 PM

Forget congestion pricing. It's a bureaucratic boondoggle that motorists are already figuring ways to beat.

Show some foresight and boost the bridge and tunnel tolls for cars and vans to $20 one way.

That will do more for congestion than Claritan.

Maybe if Corzine can get some money out of the Port Authority, he'll back off from his efforts to
dismantle the Dept. of Agriculture.

Who's going to run the invaluable Jersey Fresh Web site? Tell your legislators that this is a bad idea!

Maybe he can give commuters the millions he and his buddies wanted to pay Michigan to have another primary to pump up his patronage pal Billary.

Posted by Brinew2 | April 2, 2008 8:59 PM

so, I sit here doing the math and asking myself, "would it be worth paying if it reduced peak hour congestion to the point where I could go driveway-to-desk in 35 or 40 minutes instead of 50 to 60 minutes?"

There's a good chance the answer is yes.

There's a good chance the answer is yes.

Maybe for fat cats like you, appletony, who can afford to take stretch limos to and from work every day. But for the working stiff like lasermike, it would be a hardship, and if he can't do it you shouldn't be allowed to either.

Mikey, marsupial boy, works in Jersey. I'm sure of it. Fie on you for even thinking for a moment his modest (supremely so in their inimitable way) talents could ever handle Gotham.
