Montclair United $occer's Big Goal

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

Montclair United Soccer Club's May fundraiser may be one of the year's biggest and best foodie event in Baristaville. Make it your goal to score some tickets to their deliciously decadent party, the First Annual “Taste of Montclair,” an evening of tasting, sipping, and wine pairing. Then blow some cash on fabbo auction items...besides music and surprise guests adding to the fun, the money raised will benefit many children's soccer programs. Yes, it's two months away, so why are we telling you now? Because there are only 300 tickets available for the event, and with about 2,000 soccer parents out there, they'll sell fast. Here's what's in store:

Pernod Ricard, distributors of Chivas Regal and Glenlivet are hosting a whiskey/scotch tasting bar. Montclair’s top chefs will pair two of their favorite dishes with microbrews from Brooklyn Brewery, and wines from T. Edward Wines.

Take a tasting tour of these fine Montclair restaurants:Epernay, Dai Kichi, Trattoria Rustica, Mesob, Mediterreana, Tinga, Gina's Bakery, Applegates, Sesame, Indigo Smoke, Flatbread Grill, Church Street Kitchen, CulinAriane, Romarsi Pesto, Gencarelli's Cucina, Fascino, and more.

We hear former Montclairian and National Team player Tony Meola may host the live auction ...

Items include signed soccer memorabilia from stars like US National team players Brandi Chastain and Claudio Reyna along with special "unique experiences" for people to bid on. They have a bottled of Trump Vodka signed by "The Donald" himself, tickets to sporting events, tv shows including Letterman, Martha Stewart and Rachel Ray, and surprises from ESPN and NBC. The donations are still coming in!

Ticket prices include food, spirits and entertainment, and can be purchased on the club website here. Saturday, May 31, 7-11pm at the Women’s Club of Upper Montclair, 200 Cooper Ave.

And now a word from the folks at MUSC:

MUSC.jpg

Right now more than 1,300 children take part in our town recreation program and over 500 are on 38 travel teams that compete throughout the state, region and even nation. In addition, we have been involved in other areas to benefit the club, Montclair and beyond. To read about the programs you'll be supporting, go to our website.

We need your help to keep these programs going. We try to keep our costs in line by relying on parent volunteers who dedicate their time and energy running MUSC. Come or contribute to our fundraiser... We know you’ll get a kick out of it.

How is the the FIRST Annual Taste of Montclair?

There have been like, 10 Taste(s) of Montclair over the years.....

I hate soccer with a passion (and yes, I did coach the little prof's team... but I considered that "giving back"...).

(And don't get me started with anyone associated with soccer using the term "We know you'll get a kick out of it.")

I hear Tony Meola will be auctioning off his balls!

Posted by Church Streeter | April 2, 2008 3:20 PM

I know when I have to click through several website links to find the price of admission that I can't afford it.

Posted by State Street Pete | April 2, 2008 3:29 PM

Since I clicked through I'll save time for other readers-ticket prices are 75, 125, 200 depending on what level sponsor you want to be.

In addition to their claim that this is the first Taste of Montclair (it's not), I'd like to add that THERE IS NO SUCH THING as a FIRST ANNUAL anything. MUSC is definitely not the only group that has a problem with this but it's a real pet peeve of mine.

Posted by I'm ME | April 2, 2008 3:33 PM

I think MUSC is correct in calling it: "The 1st Annual Taste of Montclair Brought to you by Montclair United Soccer Club"

Anyway, I just bought my tickets!

Posted by Church Streeter | April 2, 2008 3:37 PM

I bought mine also. I can't think of anything better than supporting getting the kids off their asses and out of the house.

First, second...whatever as long as it is not the last. Food from local restaurants, whiskey/scotch tasting, Brooklyn Brewery beer including most likely some brews not available to the gerneral public. Seems like a great deal.

Teddy,

I'll see you there!

Posted by Belletones | April 2, 2008 5:39 PM

Belle, I thought you'd be at the coffee tonight to ask all of your questions and to become a better informed resident?? Free food and drink, come say hi!

Posted by Jon Doh | April 2, 2008 5:48 PM

Hope you actually do attend though. It's for a good cause and where else can you get food from that many restaurants, whiskey/scotch, etc., etc. for $75?!

Make sure to say hello!

Posted by Jon Doh | April 2, 2008 5:54 PM

Teddy,

I'm stuck at work. Sorry. Not gonna make it. Let me know how it goes.

Posted by Belletones | April 2, 2008 5:54 PM

Seriously, you post that much from work? Sounds like a nice job, good for you. Sorry to miss you tonight. Feel free to call or email any questions or maybe I'll see you at the next one!

It's a minor point to some, I know. But when talking about the product from Scotland, it's always "whisky" without the "e" and the plural is "whiskys."

You might add your insights here as they have you half correct, cathar.

Teddy,

Sure sounds wonderful, at least the way you put it.

I got here at 6am and won't get out until 9pm. I'm working on a number of projects that require testing using scripts.

During the time the scripts take to run my time is my own.

Every heard of the myth of Sisyphus?

Posted by Belletones | April 2, 2008 6:32 PM

Don't envy you. I do know the myth, though I prefer reading Vonnegut's early books on this particular philosophy.

Tiger got to hunt,
Bird got to fly;
Man got to sit and wonder, 'Why, why, why?'
Tiger got to sleep,
Bird got to land,
Man got to tell himself he understand.

And so it goes

If you're really interested in supporting kids and physical activity, there's a great event this Saturday night at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation (same place as Outpost in the Burbs). Parents Who Rock is sponsoring a concert and party (with raffle, silent and live auctions, food and open bar) with all funds going to help build the universal playground in Edgemont Park. Tickets are $50. Party starts at 7:00 pm, Saturday 4/5. More info at www.parentswhorock.com.

Ted,

Just got home. I'm a Linda Ellerbee fan as well as a Vonnegut reader. Are you too?

Poo-tee-weet?

Posted by Belletones | April 2, 2008 11:29 PM

John Doh, Duckie, I assure you both, after extensive time spent in Scotland (a friend even leases some land out there so a farmer can grow a special strain of barley), only Sassenachs there spell the plural "whiskies." The Scots are in many ways a rigid folk, I must plead.

By way of going right to the source, too, I also checked my bottles of Highland Park, Scapa, Old Pulteney, Talisker and Ben Nevis, all of which were purchased "on site."

Posted by cathar | April 2, 2008 11:53 PM

What, by the way, is a "universal playground?" Aren't all playgrounds universal in their various ways?

Posted by cathar | April 2, 2008 11:55 PM

Ah, but Cathar...go back and re-read. I never said otherwise! Check out the link, it's a fun night. My current open bottles of Ardbeg Uigeadail and Lagavullin confirm, though unfortunately were not purchased on site.

A universal playground includes specialized equipment for kids with disabilities. They've chosen Edgemont as the park to have one. Edgemont seems a difficult location though for a ohysically disabled kid to even get to due to the location of parking and such, unless they are lookiing to change that also.

Linda Ellerbee? OK, I see, she wrote a book called so it goes that received pretty good reviews. Wnder if it's still in print?

Posted by Jon Doh | April 3, 2008 8:01 AM

All I suggested, cather, was sharing your knowledge on a site that many look at for information.

Posted by Y.A.Duck | April 3, 2008 10:48 AM

Lagavulin is a wonderful choice, I'm sure, Jon Doh. My compliments, Sir. Is the other whisk(e?)y Irish, as per the word "Ardbeg?" (And thank you on the playground clarification.)

There's a store right by the main gate for Edinburgh Castle which sells all sorts of odd bottlings of obscure or no longer distilled
malts in plain white labels, as well as the "popular" stuff. To a degree that seems almost silly, I admit. But whenever there, I end up buying all kinds of minibottles at $10-25 a pop out of curiosity.

Duckie, you always wind up sounding mutteringly petulant in your posts. You've really got to watch that, lest people decide you're thus not worth quite taking seriously.

Posted by cathar | April 3, 2008 10:58 AM

I'm sorry you think I'm peevish, but then I find you irascible. However, you'll note I've not questioned your facts (maybe your interpretation at times, but not your facts). I also look to disseminate knowledge, but hey, insulting people seems to be ingrained in you.

Posted by Y.A.Duck | April 3, 2008 11:31 AM

Lagavulin was always one of my faves until I found the Ardbeg which is also from Islay on the southern tip. They closed shop in the early 1980's only to be rescued by Glenmorangie in the late 90s.

You should try the fest in NYC. More tastings available then you could believe, including many not sold to the general public.

Posted by Jon Doh | April 3, 2008 11:50 AM

You "look to disseminate knowledge?" Ducks, don't add pomposity to your sins. (And that statement alone of yours proves your pronounced tendency to poutiness.)

Posted by cathar | April 3, 2008 11:51 AM

cathar XOXOXO
