Freaky Commuting Fact Of The Day

Monday, April 7, 2008

If you slogged through the New York Times story on NJ to NY tunnel milestones, maybe this made you pause, too.

"No one knew if that tunnel was 100 percent safe until trains had been going through it for many years," Jill Jonnes, the author of "Conquering Gotham" (Viking Adult), which details the building of the tunnels and Pennsylvania Station, said in an interview. "They really didn't know how long the tunnels would keep sinking in the mud and whether they would crack. There was no precedent for a tunnel having hundreds of 700-ton trains going though them."

To this day, the tunnels continue to drift ever so slightly in the riverbed.

Now that's a sobering thought.

Fascinating! Thanks for the link.

Wonder if the Lincoln & Holland & PATH tubes are similarly drifting.

Sobering yes, comforting, no.

Doesn't the Ramapo fault line run down the Hudson under the tunnels?

Pretty soon your daily commute will be as exciting as a day at Six Flags! Mass "Panic" Transportation!

I realize the new tunnel is the most needed part of the project, but: all that work and the new station is only going to have six tracks?

That is fascinating. Tunnels drifting a few feet is really not a big deal. I think the fact that some skyscrapers sway several feet from side to side in strong winds is more disconcerting.

Don't believe it when NJ Transit announces that they have installed automatic train car washing equipment in the tunnels. Or that they now have added "A LIving River" exhibit and you get to ride through it free
