Goodies from DC, Marvel and More

Monday, April 28, 2008

All you comic book lovers (and parents of little comic book lovers), take note: May 3rd is national Free Comic Book Day, when comic book stores across the country give away free copies to anyone who walks through their doors. The folks at New Moon Comics in Little Falls tell us they're gearing up for it, stocking up on free copies of kid-friendly stuff and edgier issues for the grown-ups. Other area comic shops are likely participating, so check in with your favorite to see whether they're on board.

And who's your favorite comic book character of all time?

Spiderman. First 'complex' comic book super-hero.

Pretty much anything drawn by Robert Crumb.

Batman. Definitely Batman, though Robin is a close second.

Uncle Scrooge, of course. Followed verraverraclosely by Huey, Dewey, Louie and "Unca Donald." (But for several decades, I didn't know he had a Scots accent until "Duck Tales" ran on TV.)

Mr. Applegate holds a very special place in my heart followed closely by Trots and Bonnie. R. Crumb is a genius and godhead but Mr. Natural is a crank.

No favorite character here, but I'm a huge fan of the work of Phoebe Gloeckner, Alison Bechdel, and of course all those Crumbs- Robert, Aline-Kominsky, Sophie, and Charles!

I may be dating myself here a bit, but I used to collect Batman, Superman, The Green Lantern, The Flash, Sgt. Rock, and Weird War. They were all DC comics. Had over 4,000 at one point and then sold them all to a collector when I headed of to college.

It's a tie:

Bouncing Boy

and

The Leather Nun

Oh, and how can I forget Al Capp and Dogpatch?

You don't have to go to Little Falls for a free comic book. Right here in beautiful downtown Baristaville The Comic Market located at 28 Washington Street will be having their GRAND opening on Saturday, May 3rd and a free comic book will be given to all who enter.

Come check out and support this local business!

E.C. Comics' horror titles ("Tales from the Crypt" and "Vault of Horror" in particular), Warren Magazines' "Eerie" and "Creepy", and D.C.'s "Weird War Tales". I was never much of a superhero fan.

The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers... go figure.

Posted by Spicoli | April 28, 2008 3:18 PM

Bunnywith.

Trashman by Spain Rodriguez.
And who can forget The Checkered Demon, Star-Eyed Stella, Captain Pissgums and Club Choad Charley by S. Clay Wilson. All underground! as Spicolli says ... go figure.

Thanks Carl, The Leather Nun! (how could I forget?)

Love the underground stuff. S. Clay Wilson's work is awesome. Tried to buy some posters of his on eBay but they weren't the ones I wanted. Victor Moscoso was also talented.

Hal Robins is overlooked and overly talented. He's a Subgenius, of course. Here's an example of his work at this link.

ummm....The Comic Market at 28 Washington Street is in Bloomfield.

Sorry, I forgot that handy little bit of information on my post above.

Batman, Grimjack, and Rorshach.

Why yes, I do like the gritty anti-heroes.
