Hag Sameach, Your Holiness

Saturday, April 19, 2008

If you like dry flat pieces of holy bread, this is your weekend! For the Jews, it's Passover. For Catholics, it's the great Papal visit, and tomorrow 57,000 communion wafers will be distributed at Yankee stadium.

Of course, the pope's New York City visit does kind of upstage Passover, and will make for many delayed seders, including one at this Barista's house. But the two events were combined yesterday during the pope's historic visit to Park East Synagogue.

Here's your Passover-Pope thread. Who's going to Yankee Stadium? And what will you be serving at your seder tonight? Send pictures of your seder or Papal visitation here. Leave your best charoset and matzo ball recipes in the comments.

(While not Catholic or Jewish, I find this photoshop of the Pope offensive... In a "let's make fun of Religion" kinda way. Maybe it's me, but I do hold the Pope in high regard. This picture trivialize him.)

Whereas THIS or THIS would more appropriate to the occasion.

I, too, was a little taken aback by your photo.

I am Jewish and my wife is Catholic and where as we don't find the picture offensive we don't feel it appropriate either. The 2nd photo link from Profwilliams is much more suited and speaks volumes about the current visit.

I any event, I prefer Matzoh with cream cheese and leaders with wisdom. This Pope seems to have one and tonight I will have the other.

This whimsical picture offensive?

Old men in robes getting their jollies with children & clouding the minds of adults with Iron Age superstition: THAT's offensive.

OY.

Posted by I'm ME | April 19, 2008 12:39 PM

I find the picture offensive in the extreme. It looks like the Pope is endorsing a particular brand of matzoh. The Pope should not be in the business of promoting products, let alone interfering in the business of Jews, even though they killed Jesus. So please, please stop mocking the Pope.

Walleroo,

What "particular brand" of Matzoh? Can you really distinguish from that rather inane, non-funny picture.

I find Holy Days in Nature....

I think I'll pass over the Pope. I'm an Orthodox Christian and our Easter isn't until the 27th. Doesn't everybody know that you can't have Easter until after Passover? The Last Supper was a Seder dinner, for heaven's sake!!

Good God, people, it's just a picture of the Pope and some bread! Get over yourselves!

It doesn't seem like a very far step from getting all upset about a picture of the Pope superimposed on matzoh to "OMG, WTF, you drew a cartoon about our prophet, now you must die"

Posted by Amandala | April 19, 2008 9:11 PM

The Iron Age ran to, tops, 500 A.D., well before most of the dogma associated with Catholicism came into play. So while you may wish to periodically affirm your crankiness, crank, it also helps to do so with some respect for historical accuracy.

That you may not like Catholics is your business. That you post about "old men in robes getting their jollies with children" should beneath you. Lest one wonder about self-righteous posters of uncertain age getting their own rocks off by needless Catholic-bashing.

I wonder, too, what might have happened had the Baristas run a picture of the Prophet himself, or even just a local imam, emerging from the unleavened bread. I could then easily foresee half of Paterson marching on Montclair demanding Debbie Galant's head (and the pelt of walleroo). But, since it's only the Pope....

Is it sacrilegious to put butter on one's matzo?!?! Because I lofe a GOOD shhhmear!!!! ;)

I caught a few minutes of what I have termed "Pope-a-palooza" yesterday on the tv at the nail salon. I have to say, I do love the Pope mobile.

You know what I was thinking, wouldn't it be nice if while he was here he donated some of that huge sum of tax-free casheesh to help the homeless.

Doesn't anyone remember Father Guido Sarducci's "Find the Pope in the pizza"? Now THAT was groundbreaking!

Posted by reallyoldtimer | April 20, 2008 11:40 AM

It seems wrong-headed to trivialize the substance of one of the world's major religious traditions and mock its representatives.

If one finds the ideology of Catholicism or Christianity repugnant and offensive and the persona of its representative worthy of condemnation, one should simply condemn it and/or him and say why.

Surely the cornucopia of misdeeds of the Church (and most all other revealed religions) over the past two millennia is a rich enough vein to mine.

The rants of the self- rightious, whether church or anti-church is equally tedious

Posted by BitPusher | April 20, 2008 5:27 PM

Having the Pope in my face all week is more than tedious. Still, I was dealing with it until he pre-empted "Neighborhood Eats" on Eyewitness News. You mess with Lauren Glassberg's air time, be prepeared to deal with the consequences.

Posted by crank | April 20, 2008 5:41 PM

Rants are better endured by any side, bitpusher, if one can spell and use English grammar correctly.

i could feel the warmth and love at the stsdium here at my home. What's wrong with feeling good or at peace with your spirituality

I just can't believe CBS showed 45 minutes of the Pope getting on a plane instead of Big Brother last night. Ruined my Sunday night of trash TV...maybe for any subsequent visits to the US, the TV gurus can set up the Pope channel and not mess about with other shows.

Posted by Brit in NJ | April 21, 2008 1:13 PM

Typical, Brit. The usual anti-Papist claptrap. Bet if that was Henry Tudor waddling onto the plane you'd be just fine with it!
Saxon dog!

Wow. A pope on matzoh is offensive? I'm glad I was out of town or I would have posted a link to this.
