How The Tables Turn

The transformation of Mexicali Rose to Calypso Joe’s was short lived. Last month, the restaurant briefly owned by Dan Russo, was sold to Omar Juarez, former owner of Ray’s Charcoal Grill. Omar plans a bigger and better comeback for his new and improved Mexicali Rose, including a fresh look, new menu selections and some of old favorites that drew crowds back in the days when it was loved. Maybe (fingers crossed) we’ll be able to love it again. Last Wednesday, Mexicali Rose had a soft opening for staff, family and friends. Frozen margarita machines will be cranked up for their grand opening sometime around Cinco de Mayo (BYO).

    Omar’s been out of Ray’s?
    Who owns it now?

I moved to Montclair in 2000. Mexicali Rose was pretty bad then. Was it better before? For a community that has pretty good reaturants offering a variety of cuisines, Montclair seems sorely lacking in good Mexican food. I hope this guy can turn it around.

Jerzee Giant, get yourself to Senorita’s for some wonderful Mexican cuisine. It’s in Bloomfield on Glenwood Avenue. You won’t regret it.

I second Looney’s post: one of Senorita’s owners was the original chef at Mexicali, working for Dominic. Their Margaritas are wonderful and you don’t have to bring your own; they have a full license. But don’t have to wait until Cinco de Mayo (which is Spanish for “Amateur Night”).

This place is so BAD. Don’t bother. It was great under Dominic, and it was terrific under his successor, but now both food and service are terrible. STAY AWAY!

I love this garden. These flowers will always remind me of my mother. They were her favorites.
