Montclair Man To Challenge Pascrell

Monday, April 28, 2008

He's best known right now for being unknown. Roland Straten of Montclair hopes to change that. From The Record...

"I have to get that name recognition," said the 67-year-old Straten, the outgoing CEO of a Paterson fire protection company. "I could have the best ideas, but if nobody's heard of me, I don't stand a chance."

Reaching voters could prove to be difficult as the presidential race galvanizes the Democrats who dominate most of the 21 communities that make up the 8th Congressional District in Passaic and Essex counties.

Add to that New Jersey's spirited race for the U.S. Senate, which will make its own demands on voters' attention.

Yet Straten, Pascrell's seventh challenger since first elected to Congress, believes he can win.

More about "Rollie" here.

8 hours and no posts here?

Seems these folks in "Baristaville" are far too into themselves to care about what's really important-- like the guy who Pascrell is going to beat in the next election.

Typical.

Fear of Other???

Prof, it's a slow news month, remember?

Under any circumstances, too, talk of Congressman Pascrell isn't terribly exciting. He is a pleasant hack, but by no means a galvanizing figure, a fiery advocate or even anything approaching a halfway interesting stump speaker. So he hangs on thanks to entrenchment in Demcoratic fastnesses, even if he does sometime seem like just an awfully good argument for term limits.

(But welcome back anyway, your profness!)

We should rejoice. A slow news month means exactly that: No horrific terrorist attacks, tragic fires or accidents. Enjoy it while it lasts.

I agree, Miss M. And you can't simply measure the interest in a particular post solely by the amount of comments. For instance, I read the post about this weekend's Art in the Park. I'm glad it was posted--it reminded me about one of my favorite yearly events. But is there a need to comment? Not really. Not every post necessarily has to be injected with controversy. I rather enjoy the occasional innocuous post every once in a while. And, it gives us all a rest from the juvenile bickering between soccermommy and montclairmommy and romanempire and all those other posters wasting their time trying to out each other.

Well, complainerpuss, there is no more innocuous reason for posting than that non-entity who serves as Baristaville's congressman. God bless redistricting along purely political lines, right?

Because without it, Pascrell might actually have to face something approaching a genuine election. As it is, however, his district seems stuck with him until he deigns to retire. In fact, he's been a Congressman for so long that I actually forget what he did for aliving before he was one.

Surely, nonetheless, an item about a doomed electoral opponent of Pascrell helps define the very concept of a slow news month.

"He's best known right now for being unknown..."

At first glance, I thought the headline was referring to Congressman Pascrell. I never even heard of the guy. Looking at his website now, I see that "Bill is a member of the Albanian, Armenian, Baltic, Hellenic, Korean, Sri Lankan, Turkish, Ukrainian and Human Rights Caucuses in Congress." Perhaps Pascrall is the one with the identity crisis.
