New Jersey students score! From Newsday...
New Jersey's public school eighth graders are the top in the nation when it comes to a national writing test. The state's students had the highest scores of the 46 states that administered the National Assessment of Educational Progress test last year; only students in Connecticut came close.
The bipartisan group announced the results Thursday.
Every subcategory of New Jersey students also scored the top in the nation, including lower-income, white, black, Hispanic, and Asian students.
On the eighth-grade writing test, there was a wide gap in the scores between white and minority students in New Jersey. But the state's Hispanic students performed as well as white students nationwide. And black students were well above the national average for black students, and just below the national average for all students.
Even students who are eligible for free or reduced cost lunch in New Jersey did as well as the national average of all students.
"It's bad news that there's a gap," state Education Commissioner Lucille Davy said Thursday. "The good news that our children of color are performing as well as all children around the country."
