Second MSU Bomb Threat in One Day

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

A second bomb threat -- this time on Freeman Hall, a dorm -- disrupted the routine of Montclair State students today. The dorm has been searched and reopened, but students enjoying "premium dinner night" had to leave their dinners to evacuate. Bummer.

This message just went out to all students:

As you are aware, the University received two separate bomb threats today, necessitating the evacuation of the Student Center at mid-day and Freeman Hall in the early evening.

The University takes any threat to the safety of our campus community very seriously, and appropriate law enforcement resources were called upon to respond to both incidents.

Threats such as these divert campus and local law enforcement resources. They are childish and immature and also disrupt students' academic focus and day-to-day life. It is extremely unfortunate that all students are inconvenienced by the thoughtless actions of a single individual or a few. Those responsible will be held accountable for their actions to the fullest extent of the law, and subject to disciplinary action in
accordance with University policies and regulations and restitution for costs incurred.

If you have any information concerning these two incidents please contact the University Police at 973-655-5222 or email police-chief@mail.montclair.edu. All calls will be kept confidential.

"...had to leave their dinners to evacuate."

Yes, college food can do that to you.

Funny, prior to 9-11, student pranks (bomb threats) wouldn't garner headlines. Today we live in fear of everything!

Back when I lived in Stone Hall(late 80s), I used to manage the student desk assistants. I had to reprimand one particular assistant who told a would-be bomber to detonate his bomb. I can't tell you how many of these threats were simply ignored. I recall one student in a particular dorm who would call a bomb threat in nightly because he wanted to see a particular female student in her pajamas. It got so bad that her dorm would then call in threats against his in revenge. Eventually, the campus police put traces on the lines and determined the culprits. Good stuff!

Jim: Interesting article. Boy have things changed since I was a college student. The only time we got decent food was on Parents Day.

About 2 years ago, I visited Bowdoin on business and was VERY impressed not only with the school but with the cafeteria. In fact, to call it a cafeteria does it a disservice. They had edamame on the menu...cripes! Now that's class. The rest of the food was delish as well.

When I went to school, we made up names for the food. "Dreaded veal chop" was my fave. It would have made a nice doorstop or dog chew toy, though.

If I was perusing colleges today, I would definitely take the food into consideration. After all, you have to eat. Why not make it a pleasant and nutritious experience?
