Sharpe James, Mistress Convicted

Just in from Associated Press:

A federal jury has convicted former Newark Mayor Sharpe James and his ex-mistress of corruption stemming from the cut-rate sale of city land.

James was convicted on all five charges he faced, including fraud and conspiracy.

His former girlfriend, Tamika Riley, was convicted on those charges and the eight others she faced, including evading taxes and cheating to obtain subsidized housing assistance for herself.

Prosecutors say the charges carry about seven to eight years in prison for each defendant.

The jury deliberated for about 30 hours over six days at a courthouse just a block from City Hall, where James led New Jersey's largest city for 20 years until 2006.

The verdict brought mixed reactions, but US Attorney Christoper Christie stated justice has been served, "Sharpe James will pay,"

Wow. Good for the jury; I am surprised only because corruption seems to be business as usual in this state, this county, and that city, so I really didn't expect a conviction. Next interesting challenge will be sentencing...

Yes, Virginia, there IS justice in New Jersey for corrupt public officials!

Posted by Pork Roll | April 16, 2008 10:51 AM

Wow, now they get to enjoy more subsidized housing.

I'd be curious to see if they do any jail time. If they do, will it be a country club jail or a regular hoosegow?

Posted by Miss Martta | April 16, 2008 11:09 AM

I've got some space under my porch..

Posted by MellonBrush | April 16, 2008 11:10 AM

The bird crap apparently was a foreshadowing.

Posted by walleroo | April 16, 2008 11:10 AM

Miss Martta, no jail is truly a "country club." A disco owner friend who did his 3 years at Danbury quickly disabused me of that notion during my first visit. There are bikers, AB chapters, shower rapes and all manner of other nasty stuff even in the most famously "lax" Federal correctional institutions.

On the other hand...it's about time for a rousing chorus of "Ding dong the witch is dead!" And if Martha Stewart can handle the can, so can Tamika Riley.

Posted by cathar | April 16, 2008 11:13 AM

As John Donne said: when a bird craps on your head, send not to know for whom the bell tolls...

Posted by walleroo | April 16, 2008 11:16 AM

And as Langston Hughes said, Hold fast to dreams, for when dreams are dead, life is a broken winged bird who craps on your head.

Posted by walleroo | April 16, 2008 11:19 AM

I'm thinking of the kind of jail that was illustrated in "Goodfellas" or "junk bond" jail, ala Michael Milken.

Posted by Miss Martta | April 16, 2008 11:22 AM

"And if Martha Stewart can handle the can, so can Tamika Riley."

Yes, Martha Stewart, Leona Helmsley, Lizzie Grubman and Paris Hilton.

Posted by Miss Martta | April 16, 2008 11:24 AM

And as Little Jimmy DIckens sang, "May the bird of paradise fly up Sharpe James' nose."

Paris only did county time, Miss Martta, and she even had a "single.". Grubman I don't know about. The other two ladies, yes, were Federal guests of the nation.

Posted by cathar | April 16, 2008 11:36 AM

Lizzie Grubman spent her time isolated in the prison library with 24 cell phone privileges and a very relaxed visitation policy.

I heard a bird crapping on you was good luck. So much for that wives tale.

This certainly made my day! Now onto the next set of charges.

Posted by GRC | April 16, 2008 11:59 AM

why are these politicians who are NOT accused of corruption pictured here?

Posted by Belletones | April 16, 2008 12:13 PM

Fear not, Belletones. In God's good time the bird of justice shall crap on their heads.

Posted by walleroo | April 16, 2008 12:15 PM

Answer: "Martha Stewart, Leona Helmsley, Lizzie Grubman and Paris Hilton."

Question: "What are the full names of the group 'Martha and the Vandellas?'"

Posted by Conan | April 16, 2008 12:17 PM

ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha - bu-bye

Posted by ackme | April 16, 2008 12:19 PM

Sounds like Cathar described his own version of paradise!

Posted by Drob | April 16, 2008 12:22 PM

I simply hope the lateness of your comment, Drob, does not directly link to the slowness of your mind.

Posted by cathar | April 16, 2008 12:51 PM

Wow, Tomika owned an Entertainment company, and worked across from Newark City Hall. She bought the Newark Land Properties for approxiametly $46,000 each, and sold them for nearly $700,000 each.

I wonder what James's Wife thought about all this. After all he was a Senator too. Who says Justice is Blind?

Posted by robg777 | April 16, 2008 1:15 PM

Yes hrhppg, in Neapolitan folklore, that is a sure sign of pending good luck....and accidentally putting a shirt or dress on inside out means that soon there will be a surprise. I am quite certain that there are no cultural ties between pigeons in Newark and pigeons in Napoli.

Now the question is...will he actually serve time? By the time his appeals are over he will have croaked. If that's the case he should burn in hell...No one should violate the trust given them and become rich on the backs of the poor people of Newark.
Let the Caged Bird rot in hell.

What's the question?

Posted by ackme | April 16, 2008 3:54 PM

ackme,

I was just wondering that, myself. I do hope some kind soul will come along to tell us!

(seriously, it took 20 years to convict this guy? He's been ripping people off since before I was even in the 2nd grade!)

Congrats, by the way, to Baristaville's Judith Germano, who prosecuted the case.

Posted by scottaleh | April 16, 2008 4:39 PM

One defense attorney said he would appeal but wouldn't say on what grounds. This leads the way to the NEXT Sharpe James trial for the misuse of the city's credit card.
