Tax Day at the P.O.

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

It was smooth sailing when this Barista went to the Glen Ridge post office today to mail nine tax-related envelopes off (don't ask), with a wait of less than 5 minutes. The big tax-day rush, they told us, was yesterday. So we went off to the main Montclair PO to see if things were any different. There was about a 20 minute line; patrons said the length of the line was typical.

Meanwhile, if you go to the Montclair post office, you'll find the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom handing out brochures, letting you know that 54 cents of every tax dollar goes to the military. They're holding a discussion tomorrow (Wednesday, April 16) at the Rose Cafe at the Montclair Public Library from 11 to noon.

Montclair and Bloomfield post offices are open to 7 pm. If you need that April 15 stamp and it's after 7, try the post office in Clifton (1114 Main Ave.), West Caldwell (155 Clinton Rd.), Newark (2 Federal Square) or Ridgewood (143 East Ridgewood Ave.) All are open until midnight.

Wow! I knew it was a lot, but 54 cents on the dollar is crazy!

That must mean all of it because that's about what the dollar is worth today.

At least in Canada or Europe Miss M.

According to the pinko lefty War Resister's League, over 18% of the 54% goes to "past military" -- pensions, disability payments, veteran's services, etc. Either the Women's League is hinting at this 54% being the cost of the Iraq adventure alone, or this article is.

I don't think the proprietors here ever let the facts get too much in the way of an item designed to roil the political waters. croiagusanam. (Once I even had to remind them of the significance of November 11, which would never happen either in Canada or across the Atlantic.)

The proper question to ask the irenic maidens of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (which I doubt very much has a division's complement of members even on an "international" scale) would be if they themselves paid that 54 cents on every dollar. And where they'd prefer it go to, as well.

Cro, I think 36 cents of every dollar would still make the average person say "wow" as well.

The Iraq "adventure" has cost $500+ billion so far, and $300+ million goes on the tab daily. But let's not allow those facts get in the way of a little flag waving eh?

Posted by State Street Pete | April 15, 2008 3:17 PM

Pete, I could not possibly be more opposed to the Iraq debacle, and I too think that 36 cents is a huge amount (though there too, the entire 36 cents is not for the war alone). But I am very much in favor of truthfulness in any discussion on any issue, and these people are being less than truthful. They do their cause no good in being so. It is not jingoism to insist on honesty -- from all sides.

Cro, expecting full disclosure is always a good thing, but I don't see that what these folks are saying is not truthful, but without seeing what they were handing out it's hard to say.

And, sorry, the flag waving comments were to be directed at our resident keeper of all things patriotic.

Let's see, nine tax-related pieces of mail:

1. 1040 for Barista and Mistah BArista;
2. NJ return
3. NY return
4. est tax, first quarter
5. Baristanet.com US return
6. Baristanet.com NJ return
7. Baristanet.com est tax, 1Q
8. Boy Barista's 1040
9. Boy BArista's NJ return.

Am I close?

Questioning the giving of credence and publicity to mal-informed loony left groups, State Street, isn't quite the same as waving the flag.

But then, perhaps unlike you, I actually went to the website of WILPF-US. Hint: they really, really seem to love Cuba And Bolivia and, naturally, Venezuela.
