The New, Improved, Somewhat Smaller, Somewhat Quieter Dog Park

Thursday, April 24, 2008

After lots of residents complaining, Brookdale Park's doggie domain got a revamp. Here, dogs and their owners try out their redone digs, from the Star Ledger...

There was some growling, but it was largely from the canines as the park entered its first full week since the re-opening. On Monday morning, Peter Gargiulo of Bloomfield gathered with Ser and other canine owners at the park and sized up the makeover.

"It's not as roomy," he said, accompanied by his chow-husky-retriever mix, Ayla, in the large-dog run. "The dogs probably don't mind as much as we do."

In February, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. met with neighbors at Toni LeQuire-Schott's Montclair home on Chester Road and unveiled a compromise plan to move the dog park opened just a few months earlier.

Her dead-end street had become a magnet for dog owners seeking a parking spot nearby, and her home and others were within earshot of what was described as incessant barking.

"We cannot handle the noise," said LeQuire-Schott, who has "Animal Friendly" license plates and three canines of her own.

On the first morning of the work week, the dog park was as much an impromptu meeting place of like-minded people as it was a place for canines to run, jump and -- occasionally -- spar.

Bill Wright was sharing tips about Coryann, a Catahoula named after a Louisiana parish and that southern state's official state dog. "If you have little children in the house, these are the greatest protectors," he said.

He marveled too at the newest Essex County dog park, praising DiVincenzo. "This is fantastic, this idea," Wright said. "I give the guy a lot of credit for putting this up. It took a lot of guts to do this."

But Richie Chevat, standing just outside the park with his Löwchen, Sprocket, had some issues with the dog park's steel archway, its ornamental brick pavers, its playground apparatus and "Time Out Area" for misbehaving canines.

"Totally overdone," he said. "The temple to Doggiedom."

Maybe this is the time on Sprocket when we dance. Meanwhile, if your pup is one of those behaving badly and getting too many timeouts, there's always this.

"Woof," he whispered.

After 3 residents complained and got 170 of their closest friends to sign a petition. Joe D tried to shut them up by revamping the dog park.

He spent money, made it smaller (guaranteed to make dogs bark more) and moved it.

There's never anyone parked on Chester or Mt. Vernon (I know because I look when I drive by) the residents said that they were overrun with "outsiders" parking on THEIR street.

The dog park users asked to be included in the negotiation and Joe D was nice enough to listen.

They didn't get everything that they wanted and the dog park IS smaller but what the barista left out of her "reporting" is:

On the first morning of the work week, the dog park was as much an impromptu meeting place of like-minded people as it was a place for canines to run, jump and -- occasionally -- spar.

Kathleen Lehman of Montclair was there with Stanley, her yellow lab, as a pack of dogs raced by. "He'll sleep all day. That's the best part," she said of the impact of the workout.

Nan Rabinowitz's young whippet, Raffi, rushed by too. "He's a racer. He's a breed that needs the exercise," said Rabinowitz, who landed in Montclair after living in Boston.

Yesterday, LeQuire-Schott said she's reserving most of her comments until a May 1 follow-up meeting between neighbors and DiVincenzo, whom she praised for being responsive during the ongoing negotiations. "It is a bit quieter," she said.

THANK YOU JOE D!!!

I find the system of dog parks pretty horrific. As a dog owner, and having brought my dog with us from the UK, where he was free to run off-leash in suitable areas, I never saw any trouble. When you pile a group of under exercised pooches in a small run, of course you'll get barking, frustrated dogs and stressed owners.
I have resorted to taking my pooch out of state to a farmer who has fields to run in - he loves it (my dog) and ets plenty of exercise. Not possible everyday, but come on guys - dogs need to run - enough of this leash law... Let's get some fenced parks and have more of a relaxed view?

In the same way that I find it cruel to keep a bird in a cage, I have often thought it was cruel for people to keep dogs in their city apartments, where the dogs have no room to run. Perhaps that is now becoming true of keeping dogs in the increasingly crowded suburbs.

I see dog's off the leash all the time in Watsessing Park. Nobody is getting bent out of shape over it. Dog owners from the neighborhood often play 'fetch' with fido or just let them run. It's no big deal. The park is fenced in so the canines can't easily run or wander off.

Even though there is a 'dog run' nearby, people are attracted to the more open larger area where their dog's can really stretch out and RUN!

If parking was an issue, they should have blocked access to the park from that street. The owners that are affected by the park can create a gate from their yard, and their neighbors can walk around the block. Its selfish and its the way they like it.

The dog park at Brookdale is still nice and spacious - hardly a small "dog run" that Brit in NJ refers to.

And MellonBrush, I know you're a neighbor of mine somewhere around here, but am concerned if you think it is OK for dogs to run loose in Watsessing Park as you mentioned above:

"I see dog's off the leash all the time in Watsessing Park. Nobody is getting bent out of shape over it. Dog owners from the neighborhood often play 'fetch' with fido or just let them run. It's no big deal. The park is fenced in so the canines can't easily run or wander off."

I personally know someone who was playing with their dog off leash in the park and the dog ran into the street on Glenwood Avenue and was killed.

And the other day my (on leash) dog was attacked by someone else's dog who had his two dogs both off leash in the park. Luckily neither dog was hurt but it was a scary incident. There are plenty of reasons to keep dogs on the leash except in a truly safe, enclosed area.

Brit in NJ and others may feel sorry for dogs for being "confined" but I'm sure the dogs would be happier being "confined" in our homes and on leash than being put to sleep in shelters for want of a home.

My cruelly "confined" dog has spent this entire rainy day curled up on a couch snoring next to me. She loves to go for a walk or a run (and we have a fenced-in yard so she can run around off leash) but she is also appreciate of a warm, dry couch! ;-)

Sorry, actually no one used the word "confined" so the quotes are inappropriate!
;-)

Mauigirl,

You're right of course. Even though I never have witnessed any negative consequences from dogs 'off the leash' in the park, that doesn't mean there aren't any.

I am referring to the smaller section of Watsessing Park between Dood, Prospect, Llewellyn and Maolis. It's a little more protected. I think that many of the dog owners that moved into the condos in the old factory on Llewellyn walk and let their dogs off the leash in this section. I used to play frisbee with my dog in this portion of the park. I think there is an 'unspoken' agreement amongst the 'locals' that it's ok to let the dogs run.

I certainly would never complain about it.
