Tragedy In Clifton

Monday, April 28, 2008

From The Record...

A Clifton mother of three was fatally shot by a man who had pursued a romantic relationship, police and family members said Sunday.

Diana Valencia, a dental technician, had told her son that she was going out to eat with her friend Dalmiro Guzman. But early Saturday, police found the pair in an SUV at Lexington and Hamilton avenues in the city. She had been shot twice in the head, authorities said.

Guzman, who turned the gun on himself after allegedly shooting Valencia, 38, has been charged with murder. He is hospitalized in critical condition.

"She gave us everything we needed," said Kenny Valencia, a Clifton High School student who at 17 is the victim's oldest child. "She worked very hard. She was loving and respectful."

Other family members said Sunday that the Colombian native worked hard to support her children and had just started her own dental laboratory business in Passaic.

Speaking on the steps of the family's Costello Place apartment, Kenny Valencia -- who has 11-year-old twin sisters -- said his mother met Guzman at a Colombian festival last year in Hackensack. He said Guzman, 52, promised to buy her gifts and wanted to be more than just friends. His mother refused both offers, he said.

It's kind of telling when the Baristanet Comment counter registers zero in response to a murder in an immigrant family.

Yet, when it's one of our own, the prayers and emotions pour out ( http://www.baristanet.com/2005/12/more_details_on_murder_case.php and http://www.baristanet.com/2007/06/double_murder_suicide_shocks_m.php)

Fear of the Other?

Maybe it is more that Glen Ridge and Montclair are more central to Baristaville? Not everything is racial/immigrant-related. In any event, I read this story today on my lunch break at work - it is tragic. There is no sense to violence such as this, especially when it is directed at good people. My thoughts are with Ms. Valencia's children during this excruciating time.

Good Lord, mother_of_i, leave the political pontificating for elsewhere.

Heartfelt condolences to the Valencia family. I feel so much for her children, and hope that in time, they will find peace.

My heart goes to these children and I wish them love.

Maybe it just makes you want to throw up your hands & give up on humanity in disgust & you don't really feel like posting those sentiments so you move on.

Happy now?

mother of, the murder-suicide to which you refer was an "immigrant family" as well.
If we are to comment on every senseless, tragic death that occurs, there will be very little time for any other pursuit.
It seems to me that YOU are more concerned with making a point, then with truly grieving over these horrible act.
Get off the soapbox, please.

Sad story, to be sure. (Why these evil nutcases can't simply whack themselves out BEFORE doing anything else is always beyond me.)

But from a Judeao-Christian viewpoint, I'd also like to suggest that any family so afflicted by evil is "one of our own." If only in opposition to what I'm guessing was a perversely intended, divisive and dumbly bitter observation above by my "old pal," mother_of_i.

Pray for the family, or have a good thought, if you will, but what's the point of pontificating ?
