Essex County is launching a consolidated attack on violent gang-related crimes involving guns and drug trafficking. The newly-formed intelligence unit, V.I.P.E.R. goes on the offensive in nearby East Orange, Irvington and Newark and "violent offender zones" county-wide, with a team of 21 detectives. From the county prosecutor's office:
Essex County Prosecutor Paula T. Dow today announced the creation of a gang and drug interdiction/intelligence unit specifically designed to dismantle dangerous street gangs and drug organizations, while reducing gun violence, narcotics distribution and other forms of violent crimes in Essex County. As part of the Governor’s Crime Strategy Plan, the newly created unit, known as V.I.P.E.R. for the Violence Interdiction/Intelligence Prosecution Eradication Recidivism Unit, merges the resources of the Essex County Narcotics Task Force, Essex County Gang Unit and the Essex County Tech Services Unit into one multi-jurisdictional investigations unit.

LOL!
LOL!
I wonder how much money was spent coming up with that name.
But, seriously, I hope it has the desired effect. The next step for the gang infected parts of Newark should involve low-flying planes and napalm.
Typical political "action"...all slogan no real difference.
I hope they find "the
Money Train" and don't kill Shane this time.
"V.I.P.E.R.for the Violence Interdiction/Intelligence Prosecution Eradication Recidivism Unit."
What asp thought that one up?
I guess they rejected the Department Of Urban Criminal Habit Eradication/ Baristavillians Against Gangs
Any efforts to curtail gang violence in these areas is welcome. Not only are these crimes dangerous to their own communities, but they cross the borders from Newark, East Orange, and Irvington into Bloomfield, Montclar, etc. Our young people in all these towns need to be free from the fear and intimidation that gangs represent, and their parents (us!) need to know that our families, as well as our property values, are being safeguarded. Let's not worry about what name, clever or otherwise, this unit goes by as long as it does it job and keeps us safe.
