Three reputed members of organized crime were among close to two dozen persons named in a sweeping racketeering, gambling and labor corruption indictment that was unsealed today by federal authorities in Newark.The accused included Andrew Merola, described in the indictment as "one of the Gambino crime family's highest ranking members in New Jersey," Charles "Buddy" Muccigrosso, another reputed Gambino member, and Martin Taccetta, allegedly a former underboss of the Lucchese crime family in New Jersey.
Also charged were officials with Local 825 of the International Union of Operating Engineers and Local 1153 of the Laborers International Union of North America, as well as officials with two construction companies, Barone Construction of Kenilworth and Kiska Construction of Long Island City, N.Y.
Local 825 is based in Springfield; Local 1153, in Bloomfield.
