A New Stew

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

We told you Stew was coming to a shopping center near you...A tipster writes:

Stew Leonard's was supposed to open last week, but for whatever reason, they did not complete on time to be fully stocked-up and ready. There has been truckload after truckload of supplies - liquor, etc, arriving in the past week. My sales manager went into the store yesterday and was told that they are now slated to open this Friday. As for the rumor about the Sopranos cast being there - they are now only mentioning Edie Falco. Also, there's going to be a book signing there on June 12th by Mario Batali.

Tipster's intel is spot-on. Barring any major SNAFUS, the doors of Stew Leonard's new wine emporium open this Friday in Clifton.
UPDATE: It's actually wine-maven Lorraine Bracco who'll be on hand to sign your bottle, Saturday June 14. Details, after the jump.

Lorraine Bracco Bottle Signing and sampling of Bracco Wines: Saturday, June 14, 1-3pm.

Mario Batali Book Signing, Wine and Cheese Sampling: Thursday, June 12, 5-7pm.
Mario will sign copies of his new BBQ cookbook ITALIAN GRILL (ECCO, April 22, 2008). Stew Leonard’s Wines is selling Mario's book for $21.99 ($8 off list price) with all proceeds going directly to the Boys and Girls Club of Clifton. Sample Bastianich wines (from Mario’s business partner, Joe Bastianich) and gourmet cheeses.

Of all the Sopranos' cast to do an "opening," Edie Falco would be the last one I would expect.

What was Big Pussy unavailable? He's always available...

is stew's the store being picketed on route 3? when you drive by during the day, the construction site is being picketed. I need to know, so i can decide if i'll go there or not. Non-union is why i won't go to Whole Foods.

Is it just for wine?

"Non-union is why i won't go to Whole Foods."

Astronomical prices is why I won't go to Whole Foods.

Don't let the union fool you. I worked at Kings when Whole Foods showed up in Montclair. Our union made a big deal about picketing the non union place for a few months then it faded out. Our union never back up a single employee over any issue, and went below our contract minimums at every negation and ever year the contracts got worse and worse. They lost a few employees to WF?s better benefits and wages.

Whole Foods is much more subversive than I could have imagined. They keep the little guys down by paying them more and providing better benefits than the union shops. Despicable!

complain: you get what you pay for... Most of the stuff I get at WF is the best tasting (we've done many taste tests...).

I'll pay more for quality.

Wasn't it Fresh Fields back then?

Whole Foods is great - excellent meat counter in the Bloomfield av store. Kings, which I like too, was established/ once owned by the British store Marks and Spencers, and wow - tonight I would (almost!) kill for an M&S butterflied spiced lamb and a cream & potato gratin ready made meal! ah, and the best chocolate eclairs outside France... (now I am drooling....)

To mention the Sopranos and Supermarket unions in the same thread is way redundant. And, if I bring a pint bottle of Gift-Wrapped-Gallo in, will she sign the plain, brown bag?

FYI: Lorraine Bracco has her own line of fine wines, Bracco wines

I visited Stew Leonard's Wines last night.

The store is overwhelming at first and has a rather confusing layout. There are lots of unfamiliar labels, most are displayed in stacks of cases. Some of the name brands are over priced. In my opinion there is not a great selection, considering the size of the store.

Wines are arranged by region or varietal but they are spread out in a plan that I found difficult to follow.

There are many signs and shelf talkers that explain the wine, suggest food pairings and offer some raitings. For that I give them credit.

I will buy from our many great wine stores here in Montclair before I try this place again.
