A "Wow" Of A Wine Warehouse

Friday, May 9, 2008

Route 23 in Wayne just got a lot more interesting...if you're into wine, specialty beer and food. I happened to spot Gary's Wine & Marketplace as I was heading to Ski Barn (now in the former Treasure Island location). When I went in expecting to find another (ho-hum) discount grog shop, my mouth dropped.

Gary's is a gleaming 24,000 square foot warehouse-chic gourmet extravaganza. The showroom is anchored by an oval granite-topped wine center with a flat screen TV showing wine country videos of places I wish I lived. At 3pm, we were invited to taste five California wines - a Sauvignon Blanc, three Cabernets, and a Syrah. Free wine tasting, we found out, is a daily event, and sometimes the winemaker comes along for the ride.

What else you can find besides 3,000 wines: charcuterie, 200 kinds of cheeses, gourmet chocolates, vinegars, Gary's own EVOO, for $19.95 a liter that you can refill, Tuscan style, from a vat in a pretty bottle. There's a full deli and vitrine of prepared specialty foods, books for the oenophile, gifts made from recycled oak wine barrels, even cigars.

Open for three weeks, the official grand opening is tomorrow, Saturday. They'll be pouring wines and serving food all day long, while a Spanish guitarist strums away.

I'm in: Mom's day early..

Coincidence: I stumbled in there this afternoon, quite by accident, on my way to the Motor Vehicle Bureau up the road. Prices are excellent, selection is broad, and they have an entire wall of pate and cheese. Wine with your cheese? What a concept. :) We'll wander over tomorrow for the grand do.

Speaking of new food markets, over in South Orange Village Eden Gourmet Market has opened its third NJ store. This place seems to have everything from the Fancy Food Show. Look out Whole Foods!

Actually, I was a little underwhelmed. With all the floorspace, I expected a much larger variety of wine than the Chatham and Bernardsville stores. Instead, he chose to expand their "entertainment" offerings (more prepared foods and gifts) while keeping the same labels of wines (perhaps limited by their distributor contract).

Over in Caldwell, I am eager to visit the new Calandra's marketplace when it opens soon ...

Oh, and for beer fans, they have 100 kinds of beer. Refrigerated. Maybe they should rename the store "Gary's Wine, Beer, Snacks, and Gifts". All they need are fireworks ...

The store looks great, sort of a Whole Foodsy kind of thing. That should keep the Professor away.

I'm not sure about "Gary". He (or his stand-in)looks like he's repulsed by the champagne and cracker he had to hold for the photo shoot, and would rather go for some milk and cookies.

Perlstein, huh?

Oh, right. The prof much prefers to purchase his organic apples from his local Upper Montclair corner bodega....

Nice try. But any regular here remembers this...,

But go ahead. Continue with your "prof don't shop at Whole Foods" thing.

And what if I didn't? Suppose I only shopped at Pathmark.

What would your elite self say then?

Those poor folks, bitter and angry.... shopping at Pathmark....

Posted by profwilliams | May 10, 2008 9:19 AM

And don't forget this.

Posted by profwilliams | May 10, 2008 9:23 AM

prof, I'm a "regular" and believe me, I don't "remember" or care what you said over a year ago. No one does, see... save for yourself.
If Whole foods, or Rosario's, or Key Food sells hats big enough for you to stuff your incrediably swelled head into, please pick one up.
My treat!

If you liked this store, Stew Leonard?s is opening a Wine Store on RT 3 just west of the Tick Tock Dinner. I went to the one in CT, its incredible

(and no, I do not work or have stock in Stew Leonard?s)

Professor, if you shop at Pathmark, I'll hail your thrift 100%. I love cheap gas stations, personally.

Refreshing, though, that a Professor (n. dispenser of knowledge at an esteemed forum of higher education) should toss around the word "elite" like it was some kind of accusatory perjorative!

just came back from gary's house of wine. Brought my wife, and there was a guy on a guitar. Wine, women, and song, what more could a man ask for on a Saturday afternoon.

(cro, cro, cro, just yesterday I was very kind to you- can I go back a day? Or is that too far off?-- but called you out for your need to move so quick to personal attacks. And here you go again. So I guess you really are the guy/gal I thought. Oh, well. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt. Remember, God don't like ugly.)

And Perlstein, I calls 'em as I sees 'em... But you've contradicted your earlier statement about me...

Posted by profwilliams | May 10, 2008 6:01 PM

ahhhh, Prof, but, both parts of you are truly you, hence your complexity ranks above Gary's finest wines.

Posted by J Perlstein | May 10, 2008 6:24 PM

Well prof, in your case it is as the Bard of Avon said, I have to "be cruel to be kind".

can i get a 6 of pabst and a box of velveeta?

This one reads way much like a blurb for an advertiser. Or, anyway, a hopeful blurb for a potential advertiser.

"Gary" is the guy who puts his sur name and face on billboards. There's one on 24 as you exit the GSP hesding towards Union. I prefer my spirits vendors to swim in anonymity, not to have an edifice complex. (I made a slight exception for Angelo Bertelli of Bertelli's Liquors in CLifton, but hey, unlike Gary he had a Heisman Tropy and even displayed it yearly in his store.)

I love Amy Winehouse's songs and wish that she could take better care of herself.
