I Risked My Life, And All I Got Was A Lousy Cap!

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Riders at last Sunday's Tour de Montclair were pumped up after the 12-mile ride, which culminated with thrills, chill, and adrenaline-pumped show by stunt rider Jeff Lenosky. The crowd oohed and awed at his performance, and others (including myself) paled when a 4th grade Hillside student volunteered to be a human speed bump. Lenosky's bike tires passed within centimeters of the youngster, who earned himself a skate board cap... Were you one of the hundreds of people who took to the streets? Did you take the 12 or 5 mile challenge, or did you dare to drive your car?

Jeff (above) was great. And the kid was crazy to volunteer... (As a kid I would have thought "how cool," but as an adult, I kept thinking about who pays when the stunt goes horribly wrong?)

The bike ride was great. The little prof rode the whole way (with a little pushing from me) and crashed- full face plants- only 3 times.

This was one of those great town events where you get to meet, talk and laugh with your community.

The wife and I woke up too late to do the actual ride, but did ride our bikes down to Lackawanna Park to watch the very impressive high-schoolers rocking out and the bike stunt show.

Afterwards, we took our own little Tour d'Montclair by biking over to Raymond's and then the Van Vleck Gardens. It was a beautiful day for it.

Did the 12-mile course myself.

I wasn't sure whether I'd be able to do it. I asked the woman at the registration when I'd have to decide which whether to to take the 5-mile of 12-mile challenge, she looked at me (I'm 31) and asked, "Do you have children with you?"

In other words, I had no excuse to bail out after 5 miles!

The ride was absolutely beautiful and helped reaffirm for me what a special and gorgeous town we live in. It also helped me find some good bicycle routes to take for the next time I want to get around town without using gasoline.

Well speaking of stunt riders, I'd like to let everyone know that a Class of 2006 BHS graduate ADAM HAUCK in competing in Europe in yet another "x games" type event.

GO ADAM!
