Get Out The Vote Here

Monday, May 12, 2008

Mayoral candidates, At-Large candidates, ward candidates. We've seen you out in the rain at the train, working to get out the vote. Here's one more chance to connect with Montclair residents and get your message out. In the jump, are questions from readers not covered in our mayoral candidate interviews here. Pick any one and share your vision for Montclair.

Candidates -- feel free to post answers in comments or send them here for us to post for you.

What will you do to improve the enforcement of speeding laws on our streets? As you know, they are not, for the most part, enforced. In addition, what will you do about increasing awareness of the law that makes drivers stop at crosswalks, another law almost completely ignored. Thanks!
If elected, what would there plan be to help Paws Animal Shelter secure some funding from the township and resolve the longstanding issues at hand?

If elected, will the candidates have the courage and toughness needed to replace the current town manager with one that respects the residents, town employee's, and his/her council colleagues?

The position is critical to any administration so please provide your opinion of Joe Hartnett as City Manager. His accomplishments? His opportunities for improvement? Will you retain him?

Why does Glen Ridge have garbage setback service and Montclair doesn't even though we pay about the same in taxes?

What are your detailed plans to insure the 'quiet zones' for the trains are maintained, knowing there is an upcoming deadline to submit paperwork?
I think everyone agrees the fact that the Upper Montclair train station burned down over 2 years ago and remains, essentially, untouched since is an embarrassment for the city. We have been told the issue is 'very complicated' and involves many bureaucratic elements, yet no progress seems to be anywhere in sight.
Do you support restricting developers to buy, raze, and rebuild bigger or multiple dwelling units? Do you support selling parcels of town land to developers?

Do you support restricting Montclair's municipal employees from "moonlighting" for other towns while they are full time employees?

Do you support privatizing services such as garbage collection reduce the cost of municipal government.

Montclair is touted as an "arts community" but we've just seen 3 more art galleries close and 12 Miles West has still been unable to find affordable space which would allow them to return. Knowing that the arts is a significant revenue generator for Montclair, what investment would you make to retain existing artists and arts organizations and attract more of the arts to Montclair? Please be specific.
Do you believe that it is appropriate that payment of the salary of $49,500 plus benefits for the MFEE Executive Director should be from taxpayer funds which is the present practice as reported in the Montclair Board of Education budget?

When people speak of wanting a quiet zone for the train, does that mean they do NOT want weekend service to come to Montclair?

I want weekend service and later and more frequent train options.

Posted by catseye | May 12, 2008 10:58 AM

Catseye...the quiet zone and weekend service are not the same topic. There will be weekend service and the candidates have no control over train schedules, that's NJT. The quiet zone is about whistles.

Posted by jerseygurl | May 12, 2008 11:14 AM

The whole whistle thing is silly. That would be like me contacting Newark Intl. Airport and asking them to please stop flying planes over my house. The whistles serve a purpose: they're there to warn people that a train is coming, which is a good thing.

Posted by Miss Martta | May 12, 2008 11:30 AM

If the whistle thing were silly towns across the country would not be applying for quiet zone status. It's a complex issue and
for an area like ours with many many crossings very close together - just for example, Bellevue, Lorraine, Jerome and 4 times at each approach means a constant stream of whistles that can be heard within two blocks of the tracks. With a train at 1:00am and another at 5:00 am it means no one living within earshot of a whistle would get more than 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep so it's a health issue.

Keep getting these SPAMs, so I decided to click and see what it was they so rudely and desperately want me to see. First off, Joyce?s face getting closer ? Closer ? CLOSER in the video was kind of scary. Having Joyce try unconvincingly to suggest she listens was a little shocking, too. Well, I hope others have had the first-hand experience I have to her style of communication, which is foundational to her campaign promise, and will reach their decisions tomorrow accordingly. One of Montclair's problems is Joyce -- kinda weird Partnership would raise this as a platform issue...

This and her "poll" is being discussed on the Watercooler.

She denies spamming anyone and says that the "poll" is not hers when it clearly is.

She obviously thinks we're all REALLY STUPID and will vote for her because we recognize her name.

To the voters in Montclair's Ward 2:

I urge you to vote for Cary Africk as Ward 2 council person. Why? Because he gets things done. For months we requested that township officials paint crosswalks at a busy and dangerous intersection in our neighborhood. Despite repeated requests, nothing was done. I casually mentioned the issue to Cary Africk at a neighborhood gathering. Within two days the crosswalks were painted.

If Cary can get this kind of immediate action as a private citizen, imagine what he'll do on the council.

Vote for Cary Africk.

Someone just mentioned to me over the weekend about the quiet zone application deadline. I sure hope that the application gets filed - we then have 2 years to review options and keep our current 7pm - 7am quiet zone in place. I think many people in the town will be furious if beginning on June 25, 2008 the train whistles start at 5am and end at 1am.

Posted by Spicoli | May 12, 2008 2:18 PM

Thanks Spicoli. I don't think anyone realizes how bad it will be because there IS currently a quiet zone. If that disappears, everyone will suddenly notice that the train whistles are really loud and then complain to the town who will no longer be able to do anything about it. The town can't control federal regulations or NJT schedules.

Just got a call from "former governor Dick Codey"--but I knew what he was calling about so I hung up before he could tell me to vote for Joyce.

Posted by your neighbor | May 12, 2008 2:33 PM

4 calls so far today, including Olympia D asking me to vote for her son. Jerry, Cary, and Teddy, or their recorded voices, also rang.

Posted by loki | May 12, 2008 2:42 PM

That's weird. I got a call from Olympia D. asking me to vote for her son-in-law, Nicolas Cage. Must have been an acid flashback.

Posted by complainerpuss | May 12, 2008 2:57 PM

Oooooh! I can't wait to get home and check the 'ol answering machine.

It's going to be like Christmas!

Is this the same cary Africk that wants each resident to get a permission from the town before you can take any tree off your property or even prune large branches

Or is this the Cary Africk that wanted to raise the fines for garbage and littering in town while he had an over flowing dumpster in his drive way that was all over the street

Just asking.....

Posted by GaryMontclair | May 12, 2008 3:30 PM

Gary? How do you know about the dumpster? Were you living in it?

Posted by 13%annualtaxhike | May 12, 2008 3:54 PM

I guess this is the point in the election where people just start making things up. Don't you think it's kind of silly? Haven't we got better things to do
Pretty soon it will all be over. Few are going to be changing their
minds, and the more "fantastic" the posts become here the less likely
readers will take it.

"Gary" You just joined (5/09/2008) or you are yet another incarnation of someone.

Let's just chill. Life is too short.

Best luck to all of you people running for election!

Although you can't all have my vote, you can all have my admiration!

See you Wednesday!

Posted by soccermom07042 | May 12, 2008 3:59 PM

I live a few blocks from Cary and I saw it, was about three years or so ago when he was remodeling his house. Litter all over the block

Ask him if you don't believe me

As for the tree thing, check the town council minutes from 2005

And no, I never been on before

Posted by GaryMontclair | May 12, 2008 4:26 PM

Two more candidate calls just in...I guess Olympia doesn't have my number because I live in the wrong ward.

Posted by your neighbor | May 12, 2008 4:28 PM

Olympia does *NEED* your number because you live in the wrong ward.

Gary- your comments don't deserve an answer. Lets talk about Mattox and his recent littering all over town!

Posted by HidingInBaristaville | May 12, 2008 4:31 PM

Maybe we can use Cary's dumpster and put all the Thrive signs and Maddox's lawsuit in there

Posted by GaryMontclair | May 12, 2008 5:12 PM

After objectively listening to the pleas of the three candidates in the First Ward, here's my unbiased assessment:

Tobin = More of the same. Another 4 years of nothing.
Murnick = Nice guy to play a game of poker with, but I don't want him gambling with my tax $$.
Plawker = Even though he's a lawyer...I found him to be smart, independent-minded, and well-prepared.

I vote for Plawker

It's too bad that HAZARDOUS WASTE Day has come and gone - the county could have handled it all!

Posted by HidingInBaristaville | May 12, 2008 5:48 PM

When is this d*mn election? I'm really getting tired of these phone calls.

Posted by transplanted | May 12, 2008 9:01 PM

For all of you voting for Thrive the election is Weds

Posted by GaryMontclair | May 12, 2008 9:11 PM

Are Joyce Michaelson proxies STILL supposed to be robo-calling me at 9:30 at night?!?! I am completely unsurprised by the assault, but it smells like desperation.

Posted by Git2itGal | May 12, 2008 9:36 PM

No Joyce's proxies were supposed to be turned off at 9pm.

If you would like to call Joyce to complain about her proxies the number that is listed on switchboard.com com is:

(973) 746-6169
