Glen Ridge Gets Down and Dirty

Thursday, May 15, 2008

Is this the same town that just last year wanted to wrap all its playing fields in plastic? If you were on Ridgewood Avenue on Saturday you might not think so. The annual Glen Ridge Arts Fair, with its usual fare of puppets and earrings, was all but eclipsed by an Eco Fair, which offered free rides in a Smart Car, reusable grocery bags and information on everything organic. And this year's de rigueur Mother's Day present? A $40 compost bin.

Did you miss the compost bin buying opportunity last Saturday? You still have a chance.

"Enclosed" plastic bin that features a locking lid, bottom harvest door and anchor pegs to secure in to the ground, making it ideal for gardeners interested in adding organic food waste to the compost. This bin does not have a built-in crank to turn the compost, and the organic material should be periodically stirred manually (as with a pitch fork) to expedite the breakdown of organic matter. Samples on view at the Municipal Building and Train Station.

Reserve one for pick up Sunday May 18 from 10 am to 1 pm in Hillside parking lot. To reserve your compost bin, to be paid for at pick-up, e-mail name and number of bins requested to: info@glenridgenj.org .

Ummmmm...... Compost......

There's something so cool and right about it.

I love my bin!!!

(If only I could put the food scraps in my gas tank like in Back to the Future 2(?))

You're somewhat correct, Prof.

The time machine in Back to the Future 2 did in fact run on garbage, thanks to its Mr. Fusion labled fuel system. But its first appearance was noted in the first Back to the Future movie.

I should know, I saw it when I was 8 years old when I saw it in the theater.

I found it amusing that some of the people working at the ECO fair were drinking out of styrofoam cups...

"I found it amusing that some of the people working at the ECO fair were drinking out of styrofoam cups..."

I made a similar comment in another thread. I will not allow this substance in my house, let alone serve my guests beverages in it.

Back to McCain. I agree with all your points, Cheese, but what bothers me about McCain is that he's voted consistently against providing additional medical bennies to returning vets.

I don't think its the same styrofoam, there was some new version my uncle was talking about that breaks down in a few years. There is also a new version of 'plastic' cups made from corn syrup and straws, forks, etc available that aren't actually plastic.

MM,
I don't know the details of the vote, but I have to believe that he had a good reason. Fiscal or otherwise.

ummmm, did I miss something? How did we get on McCain? Nice thread hijack.

You need a bin? I just have a pile. It's pretty big with tons of worms. So many juicy worms. How do the worms get in your big plastic bin? Do you have to buy them too?
