This giant horse will devour us all!

There was a carnival of sorts in the parking lot of the Bloomfield Stop n' Shop this weekend. I ran over Saturday evening for a sugar fix. Holy crap, what a mob scene. It was only by a miracle that a parking spot just magically appeared in front of me as I pulled into the lot.

There was a ferris wheel and a few other rides.

If I want to stare at freaks of nature, I'll visit the Jersey shore.

Seriously, though, this sounds like fun.

That is no giant horse! It is Mellonbrush's giant Robert Plant-lovin' cat, Tubby!
Don't be fooled.
And Mellon, you should be ashamed of yourself running a scam like this!

Cro,

We needed the money to buy more Nature's Miracle. Tubby seems to enjoy the attention and he only scratches the adults.

I've seen Samson before. He's kind of like a Clydesdale on steroids. And as a devoted fan of fast-disappearing freak shows, I've seen quite a few two-headed calves and suchlike; usually they're preserved in formaldehyde by the time we get to see them.

Many years ago, into what was called "Swan Lake" in East Rutherford, the Royce Chemical Co, emptied its waste products. Mutated animals were rather common round that lake at the time, and I still have somewhere pictures of a two-headed swan. Today, the land houses (shudder!) a condo complex.

There's is a giant racoon that visits my backyard feral cat feeding station. It's the largest racoon I've ever seen. I bet it weighs over 30 lbs. Maybe, if I could capture it, I could make some mad money with a "See the giant, cat-eating, racoon" exhibit.

I saw this feller back in 1978.

The people I went there with told me that zoo visitors used to give him beers that he would chug.

I didn't know whether to laugh or to cry.

Giant animals? You have not lived until you go to the Minnesota State Fair - we used to go every year when some of my family lived there and I loved to go to the animal displays and see the largest pig/horse/cow, etc. Some of them were MASSIVE.

That and all the food on a stick that you could eat. And fried cheese curls - yum!!!

And the best part was seeing Garrison Keillor do his Prairie Home Companion Show from the grandstand. Every year he would feature Miss Minnesota, Miss State Fair and the Milking Maids that were all crowned from their 4H projects - it is small town hokey at its finest.

OK, Mellon, but does this raccoon have feet the size of NAIL KEGS?

(must be carny-speak for REALLY BIG!)

Mellonbrush,

I remember visiting Space Farms zoo when I was a kid. I actually liked that place--don't remember any reason why it ended up as one of the "10 worst zoos in the U.S." Then again, growing up, my idea of a great zoo was Jungle Habitat in West Milford. That place was awesome. Whenever we went on the car safari, my folks were petrified that one of us would get mauled, so we couldn't even open the windows a crack for fresh air. Instead, we entertained ourselves by watching the yahoos in front of us try to feed the lions their leftovers. Rumor has it when the place closed, the owners simply walked away, and jungle habitat reverted back into its natural state and the tigers and lions ended up eating most of the other creatures. Then various animals escaped, living off the land for many years after. Probably just an old jersey tale, but one I still enjoy telling my kids at bedtime.
