Mattox's Post Election Spin

Friday, May 16, 2008

Going by the numbers of Montclair's recent election, one could say Ted Mattox's Thrive Montclair Slate got clobbered, trailing both winner Unity Montclair and second place Partnership Montclair slates. In the aftermath of the election, which cleaned house of all incumbents, mayoral opponent Joyce Michaelson told the Star Ledger "We'll see what role I'm asked to play." But if you talk to Ted, amazingly, he claims his loss as a victory. From The Star Ledger:

"Joyce's defeat came at my hands, which I'm proud of," he [Mattox] said. "Jerry Fried's winning accomplished the task that I originally set out to complete.

"I said the status quo has got to go," he said. "I just didn't realize it was me at that point."

Mattox, a maverick at-large councilor who is suing his colleagues over what he described as no-bid contracts with nonprofits, said he'll stay visible publicly with a citizens group he founded, Montclair Watch.

"Am I more dangerous or less dangerous?" Mattox asked. "At least as the mayor, you could keep me in check."

Hmmm, should Montclair consider that a warning?

No one could keep you in check Teddy.

You ran a dirty dirty campaign, threatening to release data that was over 20 years old on some candidates and releasing other data that although true was presented in a totally skewed manor to influence voters.

I'm surprised that no news organization has picked this up! They should.

Teddy, you also spent an inordinate amount of money and broke the litter laws during your campaign.

We're well rid of you and you'll notice that none of your slate was elected. That's because they were running with you.

Fried and the Unity slate ran a squeeky clean campaign and spent very little money.

Instead they relied on hard work, use of the media including online venues, having small meetings with voters, and a phalanx of supporters.

They did not, as Michaelson did SPAM people's e-mail boxes with unsolicted and unwanted e-mails, have an outside agency make telephone calls disguised as a poll, or have other politicians and celebrities make unsolicited phone calls to many Montclair residents (some after 10pm).

Good job Unity. I'm sure we'll be impressed in the years to come.

John Duh! checking in for the final time.

Over the last several weeks we pointed out how dirty Thrive Montclair chose to play. Warnings were given, yet never heeded.

Yes leadership comes from the top but don't blame Ted alone. At every opportunity each Thrive candidate had their chance to not only distance themselves from such shenanigans but to put an absolute end to it.

Sure it was convenient to send out the lad Henry De Koninck to hassle, threaten and muddy the opponents. Mike Villella, official Treasurer of Thrive, chose to attach his name to materials that hit below the belt. At least these two were upfront about how they decided to compete.

The candidates got what they deserved. Each and every one of them.
From Roger Plawker,Mark Reynolds, Starr Daniels, Joanna Brick, and Sumana Rangachar (note: men go first at Thrive). As potential leaders they could have and should have put an end to the dirty tricks.

Spin all you'd like but when you stop all that remains is dizziness and an upset stomach.

The voters of Montclair spanked no!

But that's not the primary reason for Thrive's thrashing.

Each winning candidate has been selflessly active in our community
years before this election. The Thrive candidates had little if no track record of community involvement to run on. It appeared as though their new found interest in Montclair was purely political and mostly selfish.

Spend the next four years getting your hands dirty; this time in a good way and you will have earned our votes.

Good night and farewell.

P.S.- Soccer Mom (i.e -you know who) that goes for you too.

Ted's comments post-mortem make abundantly clear how lucky we are that he lost.

He's an out of control ego maniac. It's not about Montclair. Or any particular issue. It's all about Ted. 24/7. He's infatuated with his own image. This was nothing but a big ego trip for him.

How good, well-intentioned people couldn't see through this guy is beyond me.

Posted by mets2008 | May 16, 2008 11:56 AM

No, a "spin" is something a seasoned PR professional develops, the objective being to shed some positive light on what is otherwise a negative situation.

Would you really categorize Mattox's statements as such?

Posted by banana split | May 16, 2008 12:12 PM

It just dawned on me, re-reading it, that, in the three short quotes, Ted refers to himself EIGHT times. Unreal. Sounds like a three year old. The whole world revolves around me and what I do.

Posted by mets2008 | May 16, 2008 12:56 PM

Of the eight voice mails retrieved on May 12th and 13th, none were from the Unity slate. I especially liked the unrehearsed and what appeared to be scripted endorsement by Codey.

"Joyce's defeat came at my hands, which I'm proud of," he [Mattox] said. "Jerry Fried's winning accomplished the task that I originally set out to complete.

Note to Ted:

YOUR defeat came at your hands.

You are unliked because of the things YOU do.

No one else.

Sit back, accept defeat and move on.

Posted by realistic | May 16, 2008 1:33 PM

It's time to say good bye Teddy...you lost...you lost...you lost.
Move on

Posted by jimmyjones | May 16, 2008 1:52 PM

Keep guessing SoccerMom08. You don't have it right yet!

You hands are dirtier than most:
first you posted some poor guy on the Montclair Communications Committee's name, home address and phone number and ID him as belletones.

The you posted misinformation about Murnick

Then you posted some poor person's home number and Id'd it as Joyce Michaelson's and said that people should call the number and complain about the telephone polls and unsolicted e-mails.

Now you're calling me baddd_patti.

Not my name, although I do know who she is as do the other 2500+ members of the Montclair Watercooler.

Time to put your dirty tricks away. YOU helped defeat Teddy. The people of Montclair saw through your dirty tricks and mendacity.

I hear Ted's threatening to sue one of the other candidates, how's that going?

Maybe the Barista should follow up on this one.

Posted by Montclair.Mommy | May 16, 2008 2:25 PM

I think Mattox might be right.

If Mattox followed the orders coming from Michaelson and Remsen over the last four years, Joyce would probably be the new Mayor.

He really rocked the boat and exposed a lot of the junk that normally would not have been noticed.

He also exposed Michaelson with his flyers and advertising.

She got a lot less votes than in 2004 when she was the most popular of all the ones elected.

He exposed her and he hurt himself. Fried gained from all of it.

Thank you Ted Mattox.

wow! He actually threatened the citizens of Montclair! What a nut!

Paine, your self justification is embarrassing. Your greatest fear is that you are insignificant, which of course, you were -- at least in the outcome of this race.

Posted by Paineintherear | May 16, 2008 5:23 PM

Paineintherear,

The insignificant one in this election was Mayor Remsen. That advertisement in The Montclair Times was embarrassing.

We didn't support Mattox, but we can appreciate the role he played.

The CONSOLIDATED CHANGE (a.k.a. CLEAN) slate wanted this to happen:

1) Joyce Michaelson not to win because of all her favors to special interests and her poor judgement.

2) No incumbents winning because of all the nonsense over the last few years.

3) A mixed council taking office (no entire slates).

We got all that.

We asked the voters of Montclair to consider this CONSOLIDATED CHANGE (a.k.a CLEAN) slate.

Mayor-Jerry Fried (Unity)
At-Large-Starr Daniels (Thrive)
At-Large-Kathryn Weller (Unity)
First Ward- Roger Plawker (Thrive)
Second Ward-Cary Africk (Unity)
Third Ward-Nick Lewis (Unity)
Fourth Ward-Dr. Renee Baskerville (Independent)

We won five of seven council seats (Fried, Weller, Africk, Lewis, and Baskerville).

The voting numbers are interesting. One could easily argue voters embraced our thinking. And, one could argue the results would have been the same if we didn't make our case.

I know I personally inspired 10 neighbors and friends to vote the CONSOLIDATED CHANGE slate. They were not likely to vote without me asking them to participate.

In the end, Baristanet was the biggest reason CHANGE won this election. This website informed the voters with an almost daily dose of nonsense coming from the Montclair Town Council over the last four years. The incumbents didn't get away with much this time.

A different kind of politics won.

"We are the ones we've been waiting for."

all hail the all powerful Paine

How did you get the 14,000+/- register voters to stay home on Tuesday? I must of missed that memo

Can you also tell us the pick 6 numbers for tomorrow?

Posted by GaryMontclair | May 16, 2008 11:25 PM

Come on GaryMontclair.

You know the history.

2000 turnout (24 percent of registered voters)
2004 turnout (29.9 percent)
2008 turnout (28.65 percent)

Did you really think it would be that different?

A majority of the voters always stay home in these local elections.

paine,

so you totally discount the forums that were held and broadcast on tv, the campaigning of those that were victors, any input by the Montclair Times.

silly you!

Posted by HidingInBaristaville | May 16, 2008 11:43 PM

HidingInBaristaville,

All of the above were factors.

But I believe the internet is becoming a game changer.

There was so little coverage before the Watercooler and Baristanet. They can't be ignored.

The competition makes The Montclair Times better, but not the only show in town.

Why don't you give the slate from Unity the real credit, they went door to door and got their friends and neighbors out. With no money they had to work for each vote. Same is true for Murnick, Terry and Bakersville.

That is how you turn out a vote in a local election.

Thrive and Partnership tried to use money, mailings and robo calls.

Posted by GaryMontclair | May 17, 2008 12:00 AM

There's also this...the people who voted, aside from the ones with affiliations, are the ones who care enough to vote and try to be informed about their decisions. Fried, Africk, Lewis and Baskerville were really good choices. The first ward had several good candidates so it was a pretty close call there. Sometimes the best candidates really do win.

"After American independence had been won, Paine played no part in the establishment of the new republic. Instead, he busied himself trying to invent a smokeless candle and devising an iron bridge."....thank you Thomas Paine and I hope that you'll stay!

"Thrive and Partnership tried to use money, mailings and robo calls"

How about some facts here. Unity used just as many mailings and Robo calls. They didn't spend as much because they couldn't raise as much. It's not like they CHOSE to spend less money.

Posted by His Grace | May 18, 2008 8:00 AM

IUNity set out to spend less. They used the internet including the Watercooler, Baristanet, and their well made website.

They did not litter environmental forums with flyers printed on non-recycled paper.

They held small get-to-gethers, met people at the train station and went door to door.

Their supporters also put out the news and their platform in e-mails.

Jerry Fried also xommuted around town in an electric car to show their support of the enviroment.

YES, it's like they CHOSE to spend less!

The Unity Slate won and should be proud. Thrive employed dirty tricks and their candidates suffered. The Thrive candidates should have spoken out about the tactics being employed by Maddox and his campaign manager. Their silence hurt them big time..not one Thrive person even placed second.

However, to suggest Unity beat out Partnership because they ran a more righteous campaign is simply false.

All of the candiates went door to door, all went to the train stations, all had meet and greets with the neighbors, all had supporters spreading emails and yes ALL paid for those annoying robo calls..INCLUDING UNITY

Unity did the best largely because they did not have an incumbent running for mayor. People were swept up in a "throw the bums out" mentality - Maddox's antics had spoiled the well for all incumbents.

Freid and Co. ran a good honest campaign as did Joyce and Co. (Partnership's Roger Terry got way more votes than anyone) Both campaigns should commended. To suggest otherwise would be unfair.

Posted by His Grace | May 18, 2008 3:40 PM

Joyce did not run a clean campaign. She collected people's e-mails from various sources and SPAMMED them (no opt out of her list).

She also hired a firm to run a telephone "poll" where you were told it was a poll and if you were undecided you were given a spiel for Joyce. She denied this on the Watercooler as did her campaign manager. All Lies!

Posted by Montclair.Mommy | May 18, 2008 5:39 PM

Since when is E-mailing people "dirty" politics? Again, all of the campaigns did it. I recieved unsolicited from all three. That is not dirty, it is one of many ways you spread your views.

Whether or not Partnership was behind a poll is another wasted arguement. So called "Push" polling has been used by candidates on every level. It is not dirty, it is how political campaigns help identify supporters and potential supporters.

This is Politics 101. Not Conspiracy 101.

Posted by His Grace | May 20, 2008 9:14 AM

You claim that you received unsolicited e-mails from ALL three campaigns. Did none of them have opt-out information?

I know that Joyce's didn't.

"You claim that you received unsolicited e-mails from ALL three campaigns. Did none of them have opt-out information? I know that Joyce's didn't."

Montclair.Mommy (or whoever you actually are):

From reading the above, it's painfully obvious that you know very little, if not absolutely nothing!

FYI, I was one of many dedicated, hardworking, and professional volunteers who worked tirelessly on Partnership Montclair's campaign for 6 months, so I personally witnessed EVERYTHING that the campaign did and did NOT do, and can attest that our team certainly "ran a squeeky clean campaign and... relied on hard work, use of the media including online venues, having small meetings with voters, and a phalanx of supporters."

How dare you suggest otherwise! And how do you claim to know this? Were you there? Did you attend our meetings?

Well, I WAS there, and I personally came up with the idea of posting videos on YouTube ("use of the media including online venues"), personally helped arrange many "meet and greets ("having small meetings with voters"), and personally recruited many other volunteers to assist with the campaign ("a phalanx of supporters"). Among many other things, I also walked door-to-door with the candidates, helped them at the train stations, and prepared them for candidate forums, media interviews, and public speaking events throughout the campaign.

I simply cannot allow someone as obviously ignorant and/or uninformed as you to have the last word and spread such blatant misinformation and outright lies! Can you prove even ONE of your many assertions ("Joyce did not run a clean campaign. She collected people's e-mails from various sources and SPAMMED them (no opt out of her list). She also hired a firm to run a telephone 'poll...' She denied this on the Watercooler as did her campaign manager. All Lies!")?

Where is the evidence to support your absolutely outrageous and wildly outlandish claims? If you have anything at all to show, then I'd certainly like to see it! Otherwise, you should at least have the courtesy, good sense, and common decency to refrain immediately from making such insulting, irresponsible, slanderous, and absolutely worthless statements!
