Third Ward Nick Lewis (UNITY)
Fourth Ward : Renee Elysee Baskerville (INDEPENDENT)
AT LARGE: Roger Terry (PARTNERSHIP)

6600ish total votes..pathetic.

It's good to see that the majority of Montclair voters agreed that the current town council was horrific. No incumbents elected!!!

Posted by 13%annualtaxhike | May 13, 2008 9:36 PM

I said it before and hopefully, this will be the last time.

Ed Remsen and the Leadership Slate should be ashamed of themselves. They spent my hard earned money like a bunch of drunken sailors. They all got what they rightfully deserved.

I hope this serves as a lesson to the incoming team. Now I just pray that Park Street does not become a bike only thoroughfare.

Heaven help us.

less than 7,000 people show up and that's a majority? one of the mayoral candidates should have enlisted Oprah..that seems to be working well.

Posted by lee | May 13, 2008 9:44 PM

less than 7,000 people show up and that's a majority?

Yes. Absolutely. That's how it works. Thousands of our neighbors and friends went out of their way on a beautiful spring Tuesday to cast a vote for what, hopefully, is an office of low consequence. Not bad!

Posted by appletony | May 13, 2008 9:55 PM

Sadly, the local election is the only one where your vote tends to have an impact on the outcome.

Posted by 13%annualtaxhike | May 13, 2008 9:58 PM

jeez, if you say so, Just seems like a lot of personal coin went into the last few weeks of campaigning, to send less than 7,000 voters into a flurry of activity.

Park Street a bike-only thoroughfare?

I love it. I'm going to e-mail Mr. Fried about it immediately.

Posted by russellk | May 13, 2008 10:15 PM

there are only 40,000 or so residents in montclair, and who knows how many of those are children or unable to vote (e.g., lost their right to vote due to legal matters)...so we should really compare 7,000 to the number of eligible voters.

Congratulations Jerry! Sometimes the good guys win.

okay..okay..you guys are right i'll be back in 4 years..these last few weeks have really cut into my porn time.

I think I read that there are appx. 24,000 registered voters. So a but under one third voted. Many other could be kids away at college, guys in the slammer, people too drunk at Tierney's, etc. Probably not too bad a turnout.

Now Ted has another council he can sue

Posted by GaryMontclair | May 13, 2008 10:33 PM

According to our township website, Montclair has 23,871 registered voters.

Yippee!!

Posted by Nana | May 13, 2008 10:34 PM

This clearly does not bode well for Obama.

I mean, look at that tie!!!

The O-man would NEVER been seen in it.

Clearly the voters of Montclair have no fashion sense.

(What Joyce's hair? Teddy's beard? Know what? That tie doesn't look half bad.)

I didn't vote for him, but I wish him well and will work to support his efforts because I believe he wants to see a better Montclair!

Posted by profwilliams | May 13, 2008 10:35 PM

Hey, hey, hey...watch yourself. That tie is made from recycled ties our grandads wore.

Posted by Nana | May 13, 2008 10:46 PM

I guess Ted Mattox isn't badass, afterall.

Posted by Pork Roll | May 13, 2008 10:47 PM

It does seem like more registered voters should have voted. Hard to tell just how bad we are without comparisons to prior elections and similar communities. Perhaps it is a sign of how disenchanted folks had become. This is the first time in years that I feel...wait, scratch that.

I think that I might find the energy to participate in our local government affairs again, beyond sending angry letters and questions with my quarterly tax payments.

In the spirit of your continuing role as Baristanet's fashion maven, Professor Haberdasher, note that all the candidates in our election, both victors and vanquished, appear to fasten their belts in the general vicinity of their waists. This bodes poorly for thugs and skateboarders considering a run for public office.

Posted by J Perlstein | May 14, 2008 6:18 AM

Perhaps because they are over the age of 30...

But remember, just as most boomers love to talk about the 60's, their long hair, woodstock, tie-dye and "marching with King," who now find themselves in elected office screaming about those "thugs and skateboarders," I don't thing this bodes poorly for our kids.

But it's clear you do.

Don't fear kids Perlstein, they are the ones who'll be paying for your retirement.

Posted by profwilliams | May 14, 2008 6:29 AM

what does that mean? I'm sure that Fried has ridden a board sometime in his life!

Does Mattox wear a belt. I thought he only used one in his fight for power.

Oh well, it makes no difference now.

Posted by HidingInBaristaville | May 14, 2008 6:31 AM

Your choice of generalizations are ill placed, Professor.
It turns out I was born later than those you imagine in your Woodstock / Dr King mantra.

You think I fear (?) kids, rather, I find slobs grotesque.

Posted by J Perlstein | May 14, 2008 7:00 AM

(While I'm sure you think everything written is directed at you, re-reading my post-- I didn't say you were a boomer as described. My point, perhaps I should remember to write more plainly.... was that every generation seems to not understand their kids fashion sense. But this doesn't matter, because kids have a strange habit of growing up.)

From this point, I don't call kid's fashion "ghetto/inmate," as you did here.

So have another cup of coffee and remember, the kids are alright.

Go Jerry! Great guy. Prof, the tie comment was beneath even you. Good luck to the new council, they have a huge mess to clean up. Spicoli - the current council wasn't even smart enough to use the grant money Bike Montclair got for the town. We know Cary will go every budget item with a fine tooth comb. Maybe this does bode well for Obama - sometimes people really do want a change.

Posted by jerseygurl | May 14, 2008 7:32 AM

Yay Unity!

I'm curious about how the individual wards voted. And how many voters their were in each ward. Yeah, and I want hi-tech interactive maps that you can control by finger scrolling...

I wonder how much change can truly be effected...

Fashion note: Anyone who's ever owned a perfectly broken in pair of jeans knows that slovenliness is in the eye of the beholder.

Kids showing off their Roca boxers in baggy jeans are TRYING to breach an accepted convention of dress, albeit by adhering to another convention.

We communicate a great deal about ourselves by how we dress. How great is it that just by looking at someone you can make some observations about them. It's the first step in the dance of social interaction.

In terms of turn out - in my own circle - when I aksed several friends around 8:30 pm after a meeting we were attending if they voted ( i had already )- they said no.

I think that turn out was lower then it should have been because many felt that there was not a strong enough candate for change for themselves ..
my 2 cents .

good luck Jerry -

Jersey,

Give me a break, huh?

What? I can't comment on a bad tie?

Is Mr. Fried (or you) so sensitive or self-important that you can't take a little ribbing?

Moreover, had you bothered to read my comment from last night (above) you would see I wished him well and offered my support despite not voting for him.

Your fake offense here is too much.

But typical.

"Anyone care to wager on the voter turnout today? My bookie has the over/under at 6200."

Well, the official turnout is 6974 (with provisional ballots yet to be counted). That's better than the oddsmakers predicted, but still pretty pathetic, considering we have 24,951 registered voters in town. I'm curious about what happened in my ward (the 1st). Murnick leads Tobin 778 to 755. With provisional ballots yet to be counted, I wonder if they have officially called this one? Sure is close. BTW...wish I knew something about this Murnick guy, besides his success at professional poker and seeing his mug constantly popping up on advertisements here on this website for his financial services company.

Posted by complainerpuss | May 14, 2008 8:41 AM

Murnick is a good guy, very active in his kids schools.

A lot of has been overplayed (get it) on his poker. He does that for fun but is a successful financial planner here in town. He decided to run to do something about taxes which as we all can agree are crazy (unless you are crazy)

Both he or Tobin would be great for the 1st

a Biker-only Park Street would also be safer for the High school kids.

Posted by PleaseRemainCalm | May 14, 2008 9:11 AM

My observations about last night's results:

1) I'm glad to see that no single slate had a clean sweep. Here's hoping that the diversity leads to balanced decision making and not constant head-butting.

2) Not a single THRIVE member got on the council? Really? That's just weird. I figured Plawker would have had the 1st ward pretty handily (maybe his name sounds too much like Plofker?).

3) Ted lost by that much? Wow, I guess I'm not the only one who thinks suing to get your way isn't honorable after all.

I too would like a "biker only" Park Street, with 1000cc displacement as the ante. Damn the high school kids on this one, however.

Posted by cathar | May 14, 2008 9:43 AM

Miss M, you just made me wonder:

why do most toilets have the flush lever on the left side when most of us are right-handed?

Posted by crank | May 14, 2008 10:04 AM

(Ugh, enough with the "he's active in his kid's school" stuff. To quote Chris Rock: "You're SUPPOSED to be active in your kid's school.")

Some folks always want and give credit to folks who do what they should be doing anyway...

Good luck to all.

Just watch the gambler please.

I think it is very telling that of the three slate websites, Unity was the only one that provided a way to email each of the individual candidates. It is also telling that this morning, Unity is the only website that offers a message thanking the voters.

Tax assessments, garbage set backs, school budget, less for more politics have me disengaged. Didn't have the energy to vote for the least bad of 3 mediocre options.

If there were 6,974 voters yesterday (not counting provisional ballots) and there are 24,951 registered voters in Montclair, that means a 27.95 per cent turnout. Not as high as, say, the Presidential primary in February, but a lot higher than all of Essex County which mustered 23.94 per cent turnout for all municipal elections yesterday.

Posted by JoeT | May 14, 2008 12:51 PM

What does "Under Votes" and "Over Votes" mean?

Bitpusher. An "Undervote" is a vote that could have been cast, but was not (or, for the conspiracy theorists amongst us, was cast and not counted).

For example:

Last night, let us say that a total of 7,253 Montclair voters voted in yesterday's election (there is an inconsistancy of 28 votes in the "unofficial" tally on the County Clerk's site, probably related to absentee ballots), but only 6,974 voted for mayor. That means that there were 279 undervotes. Certain circumstances are more likely to produce many undervotes, for example, if you get more than one vote for an office, like when you vote for Freeholder-at-Large, you get four votes. If you only vote for one, you produce three undervotes. Also, the farther down the ticket you go (especially in Presidential Elections), the more undervotes you get, because many folks just go in and vote for President, or President and Senator, etc. Also, uncontested races often produce many undervotes

The system we use in Essex County locks-out "Overvotes" except for the absentee & provisional ballots, so the number should usually be 0. But (at some personal risk) I will use the 2000 Florida vote as an example. If a punchcard had a hole punched out for Bush and a hole punched out for Gore, that would be an "overvote" (The press covering that election often called that 2 overvotes - one for Bush and one for Gore - but that is not generally considered correct, although depending on what aspect of the overvote you are discussing, it can make it easier to discuss that way). Overvotes are considered invalid, and are not counted in determining results.

P.S. Congratulations to Jerry and all the winners, and congratulations to all the other candidates for stepping-up and participating in our democracy. I have a feeling that many of last night's winners will be envying you before too long.

Good Luck and Best Wishes to you all, and Good Luck and Best Wishes to our big sister town to the West.

Thanks Carl.
