The township clerk's office reports that Unity Montclair's Jerry Fried swept Wards 1, 2, and 3 - but was trounced in Ward 4, where the majority vote was closely split between Michaelson and Mattox. Final counts in the jump.
Ward 1 - Fried: 901, Michaelson: 750, Mattox: 369
Ward 2 - Fried: 974, Michaelson: 687, Mattox: 472
Ward 3 - Fried: 542, Michaelson: 373, Mattox: 319
Ward 4 - Fried: 345, Michaelson: 575, Mattox: 546

I hope Fried doesn't write off the 4th ward like Obama did W. Virginia..... Or rather, in the face of these numbers, I hope he still reaches out to them and doesn't just work with those who voted for him.
Perhaps, this all goes back to Fried's unfortunate comments during the Tour de Montclair when he called 4th warders "bitter folks who cling to their strange one-way streets with strange name changes like Gove/Elm/Orange..."
Very unfortunate.
Do you have the Ward Breakdown for the At Large Candidates?
Please show us where he said that.
Montclair.Mommy,
The Prof's post was obviously a parody of Obama's statement at a private function that PA Democrats were "bitter people who clung to their guns and religion".
This just in, Fried has announced that the 4th Ward is now a bike park with no cars allowed
Sheesh... Talk about sore losers.
Isn't it time for the Teddy vs Jerry feud to die down and for all of us to get on with our lives?
At the very least give the new council a chance to mess-up before jumping all over them.
Well! Congratulations, Montclair! While I supported different candidates for mayor and 4th ward, I am happy to see that enough of us were not swayed by the current (now lame duck) council's Jedi mind tricks.
I supported Mattox for mayor and Lang for fourth ward. However, it was so hard in the fourth ward. Both Dr. Baskerville and Attorney Lang have for many years been unrelenting in their service to and fight for their neighbors. I am confident that Dr. Baskerville will uncompromisingly ensure that those who live and work in our ward will be heard at 205. Although I expect to leave this town soon, I am so glad to have gotten to know both Counselor Lang and Dr. Baskerville.
Mayor-elect Fried has won a mandate. I hope he will use the momentum from this victory to fix the things he can in our town. I hope he will be the mayor with the righteous indignation sufficient to bring the force of the thousands of voters who call Montclair home upon Trenton and demand school funding reform. Towns around NJ dumped their incumbents over the issue of property taxes, which in my opinion is the silliest thing when the municipal government receives less than 30% of the average property tax bill in this state.
Mayor-elect Fried, are you listening? Are you on the phone rousing the rabble who in a few short years will not be able to afford to live here anymore only because of the attendant tax bill?
The Governor, Assembly members and Senators who represent any part of this town owe this town so much for their election. They must not be allowed to go a single day without hearing from a number of us saying, "FIX THIS MESS NOW!"
I'm sorry. I digress. Congratulations to all of the winners in yesterday's election. I will be sure to pray that God gives you the strength, wisdom and courage for the task set before you. I will pray for your families and businesses as well.
Mr. Mattox, please don't go away. Stay in the fight. Your forthrightness and integrity are what we will need from a community voice. I wish you and your bride and your little ones the best in the coming transition period.
Counselor Lang, you and I have talked so many times about the good, bad and ugly of our town and town politics. I have learned much from you, and come to really appreciate your acquaintance both before and since you were elected. I wish you the best in all things and will be praying for you in your transition.
Ms. Michaelson, I wish you the best as well. I have appreciated our email exchanges over the years regarding town matters. Please do not cease in your service to the community. Your work and service are invaluable.
To remain positive and civil, I will not comment on my thoughts on the departure of the rest of the council members. Nonetheless, my prayers are with you as well in the upcoming transition. Farewell.
Leon De Vose, II
2004 at-large candidate
Effective Government slate
and he's providing free trikes for those who pledge to no longer use cars to do their errands around town- see the notice in the Montclair Times
Leon De Vose is providing free trikes for those who pledge to no longer use cars to do their errands around town? That is so generous of him. I'm glad to see Mr. De Vose is keeping busy since his election loss in 2004. Let's see Joyce and Ted top that one!
Actually it was Ted who is offering the Trikes.
You can mail him to apply.
I feel like there might start to be options for people getting around Montclair besides driving that are actually safe, and it's a good feeling.
It sucks to know that people sometimes drive downtown even though parking will take you as long as just walking (and longer than biking) simply because decisions that have been made have created a situation where it's often unpleasant or unsafe to walk or bike.
Changing that would not just be a good thing environmentally, it would also contribute to improving the traffic and parking situations in a very real and concrete way.
