exploremontclaircover.jpg Baristanet's long-awaited collaboration with old media (aka The Star Ledger) finally happened, but not without some technical snafus. Our joint "Explore Montclair" guide was published today and you can find here and it at many locations around town, including Montclair Realty, Watchung Booksellers and Vanity Hair Salon.

If you live in Greater Essex and get a home subscription, you were supposed to get a copy. But we've had some reports of undelivered copies. Star Ledger subscribers, please let us know in the comments whether you received our guide with your paper. If it was missing from your morning delivery, let us know the address and we'll make sure your delivery person gets it to you tomorrow. And let us know how long it takes you to complete this.

The special online feature shown below, which highlights some Best Bets onto a Google map, is still in progress. Take a peek to see how we're starting to map Baristaville for you.

The "alliance" smacks of desperation upon the Star-Ledger's part. That or they just didn't believe Phil Read and their other staffers could churn out enough interesting, readable copy.

I await the judgment of discriminating readers on the editorial content. Especially as to whether any of it's at all surprising. But I hear the death knell of the Star-Ledger redounding throughout the land over this one.

Even that it is in fact the Baristas here who are offering to rectify any delivery problems, that tells me something. I say 5-10 years tops for the paper in its present printed form. What say you, prof williams?

It's funny. I know why the Ledger is doing it.

But why the Barista's?

I understand it's the largest paper in the state and maybe it may reach some folks who don't know about this site. But who outside of those from or near baristaville will care?

(I think this may still be based on some past "notion" of what the newspaper was, and so it seems like a good idea only if you still have that faded view of newspapers in general and the Ledger in particular.)

But since $$ rules, me thinks the answer is as simple as advertising dollars.

For the record, too, it took me about 9.5 minutes to do the crossword puzzle. Where is the Friday-Saturday Will Weng when we need him, you know?

Several hundred years ago when I was commuting in on the NYNH&H RR from Connecticut, I usually got into a bridge or gin game in the morning. But many mornings I watched this one man do the Times crossword puzzle with a fountain pen, in absolutely no time at all. One morning, as we pulled into Grand Central Terminal (late, as usual), this man got off the train and left his paper. I picked it up and later, while I was perusing the news over a cup of coffee at my desk, I came upon the completed puzzle: it was gibberish. Not a single word was correctly filled in. Months later I found out the fellow was a bond trader. There was a lesson in there, somewhere.

If he was a succesful, prosperous bond trader, Conan, why hold it against him?

As for anyone doing a crossword puzzle in ink, sometimes that's just because soemone hates the feel of a pencil in his hand, and has done it this way for 50 years or more, honest.

The greatest crossword puzzles are supposedly those of the Times of London, which the Post thoughtfully runs daily. But they're very, very hard to do if one is not a Brit, because of idioms, what is learned in h.s. English class, etc.

Decades ago, however, when "Spy" Magazine was around, Roy Blount Jr. did something similarly difficult on a monthly basis that was specifically grounded in culture on this side of the pond. I used to finish them regularly, but Britfriends simply had no luck because, again, of idioms, differences in schooling, etc. Gee I miss those puzzles.

My Ledger was not delivered so I missed it all...Damn!!
Actually, my Ledger is very rarely delivered. They can't seem to get it right.
