Is Montclair's Watchung Deli destined for the Sandwich Hall of Fame? Loved for years by locals, non-stop publicity from press and TV from as far away as Germany, has brought hungry customers in droves to the deli.
Deli-fever peaked last month, owner Robert Johannsen said, when a video news clip ran in NY city cabs for three weeks. The "Benny Mac" a mac-and-cheese sandwich causing the sensation, got the deli a mention in yesterday's NY Times. "It’s a full-body experience — like a mud bath, but with extra ooze."
"We're getting a lot more students and new customers coming in, and our dinner business is crazy," Johannsen told Baristanet today. "We've had to hire extra help to handle the extra business, but no one's complaining." It's a good thing.

I'm guessing that's approx 1,500 calories.
How long till Meme pickets the place?
Lets rename the sangwhich.
I think it should be named THRIVE MONTCLAIR because it's large, overblown, oozes, and really does nothing butsit there and say NO!
As the video clip says it's "a full body experience"
I see it as more of a Unity or Partnership of very different ingredients.
Um, comparing a sandwich to a mud bath? Not the best choice of words, IMHO.
Certainly not a Unity.
I still think it's a THRIVE since it will get back at you (maybe sue you a time or 2)
Yeah, we get it. You don't like Mattox. Move on.
(I'd like to welcome Watchung Deli as a new advertiser here. I hope business continues to do well.)
you're wrong. I like Mattox.
I like Mattox on white bread with mayo lettuce and tomato.
You know what sandwich I don't like? Spam. As in, the spam BOE Insider keeps posting here. This election can't come quickly enough.
You too keep posting here. How is your SP*M different from my posts.
i used to go to the watchung deli, thinking that they were the locals, but somebody got me a sandwich from the Plaza Shoppe, nearby, a while back and now i go there. those folks are much friendlier, and i appreciate that a lot!
The Mattox, that must be an entertaining sandwhich. While you're eating it you hear a chorus of NO NO Nannette and then it's lawyer calls.
How many lawyers on that slate?
5 or 6 at least!
I love Watchung Deli. I didn't know that they only take cash, so once I ordered a sandwich and had no cash but they let me take my sandwich AND a drink and sides as long as I came back the next day to pay with cash. This was in 2007, not 1950. I only get in there once a month or so, but they still remember where I work and ask me how it's going. Very rare these days. Compare the customer service of Watchung Deli to the newspaper stand on the corner of Watchung Plaza.
we always referred to the plaza shoppe as the dirty deli. i wouldn't eat there. everything at watchung is fresh and the people are friendly. they also make great sandwich tray's and are affordable.
(Thankfully nmw, many folks do eat at the Plaza Shoppe. The owners are a very nice family with hardworking and respectful kids-- kids who work-- who keep the place tidy. So while you have not found it to your liking I don't think your reference is fair. However, what I do find offensive- shock here- is your inability to begin a sentence with a capital letter.)
the plaza shop did use to be dirty back in the day (when my kids were growing up in the 80's and early 90's). we called it the dirty deli too--but i do believe it is a much cleaner place now.
prowilliams- thanks for your note on my grammer. much appreciated. My post was my opinion and i'm sticking to it. you're entitled to yours as well. I LOVE the watchung deli. have been going there for years and will continue to support them. I don't like the plaza shoppe and I won't eat there. :)
nmw...either that was the dryest bit of humor I've read here in a long time, or you're confusing grammar with the guy who played Frasier Crane. Or both.
Is that Atkins friendly?
Anyone impressed by this sandwich has clearly not been to a Rutgers' Grease Truck.
