The School Principal And The Blazing Car

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow announced today the principal of an elementary school in Orange has been indicted on charges of arson and insurance fraud for allegedly arranging to have her own car torched.

Amanda Wright-Stafford, 51, of Hillside, was charged by a grand jury yesterday with second-degree aggravated arson, second-degree insurance fraud and third-degree attempted theft by deception. If convicted, Wright-Stafford could serve 10 years in prison. Her arraignment date has not been set.

The backstory, after the jump.

At around 10 p.m. on October 3, 2006, the defendant’s 2000 Honda Passport was found ablaze in East Orange. Detectives say Wright-Stafford filed a theft report in Newark on October 9. Wright-Stafford claims she parked the vehicle on a Newark Street before meeting up with a church group in Union bound for Jamaica.

A plausible story? Not. Authorities questioned why the defendant didn't leave the car parked at her home in Hillside or at the church parking lot in Union prior to the trip. The vehicle showed no signs of forced entry, no sign of ignition system tampering and no sign of being stripped for parts. The vehicle was valued at approximately $10,000.

The truly interesting thing to me is that the original Star-Ledger this may be taken from mentioned that this woman is the third such educator charged with arson in recent days.

Now, it seems as if these folks should know better, and that they're likely idiots (who have never heard either of the very capable ATF or about its charge to investigate arsons). Which in turn leads me to question their possession of advanced degrees, and of course the quality of the most likely state institutions of higher learning where they got such degrees in the first place.....

(Isn't this a title of some Dyan song?)

Maybe she and the pizza guy from Caldwell can share a pizza in prison.

The School Principal and the Blazing Car
By Bob Dylan

The festival was over, the boys were all plannin' for a fall,
The cabaret was quiet except for the drillin' in the wall.
The curfew had been lifted and the gamblin' wheel shut down,
Anyone with any sense had already left town.
He was standin' in the doorway lookin' like the Blazing Principal.

Thank you walleroo!!!!

This brings me back to those wild days at the Caf? Wha?!

I'd recommend Wright-Stafford's school to anyone seeking an inferior education.

Wally, as you know Dylan worked for many years with that graet ensemble, THE BAND. I have it on good authority that this particular principal was the inspiration for their classic, "Wheels on Fire".

A deep tip of my hat for the above jape, croiagusanam.

This would never happen in Montclair.

Here the principal's car would be undoubtedly coated in asbestos.

It could only happen in Montclair if Tommy the Torch gave the MPD 48 hours notice, via e-mail, that he intended to do the principal this solid.

And cathar, I'm not talking to you, as you have been eating fried oysters and she-crab soup in the sun while I was freezing me arse off up here.

You owe me an apology, croiagusanam. I prefer my oysters raw or "roasted" (the local ones are weird-looking, they grow in clusters) and I don't particularly like she-crab soup. But I peel and devein my own shrimp, $35 for 5 lbs right from the Rockville docks, heads on.

Shall I get you a bag of hush puppy mix from Gilligan's when I go down SC way next, in late June? Or a six-pack of Palmetto Amber? Perhaps either one would ease the "hurt."

What you COULD do is bring back some of that South Carolina warmth and sunshine. It's desperately needed here.

MM,

Hang in, a couple more days and we'll be turning on our air-conditioners.

cathar, i said I'm talking to you, but if I was I'd say that some Palmetto Amber might very well prove to be the appropriate balm.
I love the soup. And the oysters. And the chicken. And the shrimp. And everything else I ever had down there.
