For a smaller carbon footprint, bike the Tour de Montclair, Sunday, May 4!
Why we should all ride bikes more often:
60% of the pollution resulting from auto emissions is released during the first few minutes of operation. Short car trips (distances that could be easily bicycled) are much more polluting than longer trips on a per-mile basis. This year, the 6th Annual Tour de Montclair celebrates bicycling as a feasible, low-emission travel choice to work, school, shop and play.
Why you should ride the Tour de Montclair:
It's the most fun town-wide ride around! The family-friendly ride offers two routes, 12 miles and 5 miles; both begin and end at Crane Park (Lackawanna Plaza & Glen Ridge Ave.). Check-in starts at 12:30 - begin riding at 1pm. Check out Jeff Lenosky's amazing stunt bike show at 3pm. Festivities before and after the tour are open to everyone!
Looks like rain for Sunday...but it may still be wheels up. Tour Organizer Lauren Torchio says if the weather looks iffy, folks should call Montclair Recreation and Cultural Affairs after 9am, 973-509-4914, to check the status of the May 4 event. Rain date is Sunday, May 18.

I ran into a herd of these bike folk today. They did look family friendly, but I don't think that they're all that environmentally friendly. When you add up the carbon footprints of a few dozen squad cars being used by the cops involved in traffic control to the extra carbon generated by all the cars waiting an extra 5 minutes at every intersection visited by the herd, I'd wager that global warming just inched a little closer.
