Why Try Pie?

Sunday, May 18, 2008

Because if it comes from the Pie Store on Watchung Avenue it is not only delicious but also something a little different. Last week we tried the cornish pasty and the steak, ale and mushroom pie and were woozy with joy. Now all they need is a website that I could link you to. Well, there is this website:www.londonfoodco.com because The Pie Store is an offshoot of The London Food Co. But you knew that.

Mmmm, yum! What's the address of The Pie Store? Ideally, it should be 314 Bloomfield Avenue.

ok Miss M, why should it be 314 Bloomfield Ave.?

Prices were a bit high. Food could have been spicier....especially the potato, onion, cheese pie....not enough cheese and altogether quite bland. crusts were superb on the steak and ale pie.

Pi=3.14

Ha! That's right! and they should celebrate every Pi day (march 14, of course.)

ya know Fran...they did celebrate 'pi' day - march 14, I remember people talking about it...and MM, I should have 'got it'too.

I tried a few of them today and had mixed feelings. The shepherd's pie was pretty good. The apple pie on the other hand was just ok. My main complaint was the crust. It actually did not have a bottom crust (which I find a bit odd) and the top of the pie consisted of a crumble rather than a pastry crust.

I will give them another chance but if all of their sweet pies are crustless bottoms and crumble tops than I will skip them in the future.

One of our local schools is not opening today because of an asbestos crisis and the best the Baristanet can do for the last 18 hours in a frivolous piece on pies. That's definately a reliable neighborhood new source for ya.

Hari,

sounds like you got apple cobbler, not a pie.

- I hate useless flash intros to websites...

Posted by RealHawker | May 19, 2008 7:54 AM

Agreed, RealHawker. I hate that and also web sites/pages that take FOREVER to load.

RealHawker

I agree, it does sound like cobbler. But.....It was sold as pie. At the time I was there, they only had two dessert pies (apple and apple quince) and both were the crumble top crust variety.

Has anybody had a dessert pie that had a bottom crust from this place?

I will often make my own meat pies, but last week we thought we'd try the steak and mushroom from the Watchung Pie store. It was pretty good, and as an English foodie I can confidently say that it was typical of a good British pub pie - not amazing, but certainly the best I have bought in the States! Try it for yourselves....

Baristanet covered that piece of news yesterday, 45 minutes before the pie story was posted.

the pie shop is overpriced and terrible. terrible tasting pies. the apple crumble tasted like it was made with jarred apple sauce and the topping was just flour - no flavor. will not go back. for a great fruit pie go to graces on walnut street!

I don't get it.

We have been a customer of The Pie Store for months, have tried almost all their dishes and have never been disappointed.

Frankly I appreciate that they don't over spice their dishes.

If I want more sweet or salty I'll just add it when I get home.

As for the price, let's face it, the cost to turn out good quality food is high these days. I am happy to pay for the fresh delicious food and cordial service here.
