Parlez-Vous Gastronomie?

Friday, June 20, 2008

hillside%206.jpgWhat does a Montclair French Class do for an end of year field trip? Go to a bistro, for a taste of French cuisine and culture, bien sur.

Last week, Nadine Quatorze, Hillside School’s French teacher and 22 lucky fifth-graders said "Bon Appetit" to each other at Bistro 18. Enjoying a change of pace from Hillside cafeteria, the kids were treated to a special French menu by Chef Ricky, who studied at FCI under legendary André Soltner,

The students had been practicing how to order a meal and social conversation in the classroom, and now had an opportunity to do some parlez-vous in a restaurant setting. On the menu: baguette, crepe aux poulet et fromage (crepe with chicken and cheese) and creme glace (ice cream)...Vive la difference!

Get Proustian and talk about your favorite french meal...

At Mon Ami Gabi(where the Iceman and IceQueen were wed this past November) on the first floor of the Paris Hotel in Vegas. Wonderful representation of a French bistro. And the hotel also has a Champagne Lounge, Napoleon's, serving over 100 different champagnes.

Fries, homemade, Crisco. Big fat steak fries, goden brown, unbelievably hot, dusted with salt and sprinkled with cider vinegar.

Hard to say "favorite" but one most memorable meal was at Le Tour d'Argent serving duck three ways, amazing Bordeaux, and a monster view of Notre Dame just across the street/river. I used to love a left bank hole in the wall, La Lozere, which served up Aligot and sausages.

Ironically, the woman that I stayed with in Paris when I was in school there was an awful cook. Food was regularly burnt and tastlessly ruined. Ugh.

I had a really good pizza in Paris though : ) But, seriously, the one and only time that I hadd escargot was in a restaurant on the Champs Elysees and it was great. I really liked it.

When I went to a French restaurant in White Plains with the high school French Honor Society, I had a fabulous canard a l'orange.

I just had some French Fries...does that count?

Last weekend at Yogi Berra Stadium. Dollar hot dogs on Father's Day--doused with French's Mustard. Now that's gotta count, right?

At what is considered by many gourmands to have been the best restaurant in the world: Fredy Girardet's in Crissier, just outside of Lausanne, Switzerland. Second best, Lucas Carton, Paris. I envy Liz, though, because I have yet to be in Paris long enough to secure a reservation at La Tour d'Argent.

And, having had the pleasure of sharing the repast with the bride and groom at Mon Ami Gabi, I would rate that as exceptional Bistro food. If only the rest rooms weren't in frikkin' Siberia...

One night my husband (then he was my college boyfriend) and I had driven for 7-8 hours and arrived in a Campanile hotel for the night, just outside the region of Champagne - exhausted and starving! It was too late to go anywhere, and the manager came out with a baguette, some cheeses, salads and a jug of red wine. It was like food from heaven, and I will always remember the food that night - over 10 years ago.
Sometimes simple is all you need.

Conan, I had to live in Paris to get a table there. BTW I'm Annette, not Liz.

Just the type of post to make the Francophiles come a runnin' with stories..;)

It is always hard for me to get past the idea that France's national hero was a heartless butcher who tried to enslave the known world, that the nation essentially rolled over to the Germans in WII (and that so many then prompty enbraced Occupation), that they dine on horsemeat and that, most importantly, France has never, ever produced a great rock 'n' roll band or even a great rock song. Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir were also pretentious, empty-brained jerks.

Accordingly, the world's greatest cuisine remains that of Italy, as Catherine de Medici taught the French when she brought her chefs with her. All else about French cuisine is foolish persiflage.

I'm sorry, Annette -- my bad. I worked in Europe for a while and did a lot of work for clients in Paris -- I suppose I could have found someone of great importance at one of those companies to make a reservation, but I never got around to it. We ate at Lucas Carton by making a same-day 6 PM reservation -- that is the equivalent of eating dinner in Florida with the 3:00 PM Early-Bird-Special crowd... :)

What wine goes well with persiflage?

I dunno. I kinda liked Sartre:

cathar, cathar, cathar,

It's clear you are no Lester Bangs when it comes to music.

Perhaps you forgot this French Classic!!

Posted by profwilliams | June 20, 2008 4:25 PM

prof, prof, prof, Lester Bangs is dead.

I do like Cajun and zydeco music, but its players are all American and its rhythms and lyricism owe very little or nothing to the land and music of Johnny Hallyday and Francoise Hardy.

Eggs Benedict of course. The best I've ever had was at Passionne, so good and rich and delicious, I couldn't handle it. Passionne, by the way, has started up their Sunday brunch again.

Fronch dressing. Fronch fries. Fronch bread. And to drink....Peru!

at a french roadside truckstop in the early 1980's.. my then husband and i were hitchiking...i still remember the meal: green salad with dijon vinagrette, a fresh mushroom omlet, panfried potatoes with garlic and parsley, crusty bread, stinky cheese and cheap red table wine. dessert was coffee and tarte aux pommes . cost us about 6.oo for the both of us !!

Best meal ever at Le Monde de Chimere on the Ile St. Louis in Paris. On our honeymoon in March '85. Simple but elegant food that was perfectly prepared.

La Palm d'Or in Cannes - clams, crayfish and squid in a spicy citrus sauce while sitting on a hill overlooking the Croisette. Not as good the Italian version at the small restaurant in Positano that gave out free drinks one night when there was a black out, but still pretty amazing.
