Commuter Train Service Gets Uppity

Tuesday, June 24, 2008

DSC_6800.jpgBrand-spanking new double-decker wagons have been spotted intermittently cruising through Baristaville, so we had to go to our NJT guy Dan Stessel to find out exactly when local commuters might be able to hop on the high ride.

Stessel says they're operating a 6-car multilevel trainset on the Montclair Line for the #6237 (12:30 pm departure from New York Penn to MSU) and #6244 (4:02 pm express train from MSU to New York) trains. These trains provide up to 20% more seating capacity, but the big bonus - no one has to sit in the dreaded middle seat (all seats are aisle or window.)

Right now, nearly half of the new wagons have been delivered to NJT. They're operating more than 130 cars out of a total fleet of 279. And more multilevels are coming to the Mid-Town direct - let's hope they show up for rush hour... For an inside look, go to the jump...

These train cars are great. Very comfortable and roomy. If I remember correctly from my one ride, the seats dont reverse, so for some rides, passengers will face away from their destination, which could bother some commuters.
Im all for this change though.

Great! Plenty of extra seats for the empty 12:30 train, yet not enough for the packed 5:45 and 6:18 rush hour trains.

I actually rode on one of these during rush hour once, when the trains were screwed up. Unfortunately it was so packed that I didn't get a seat for most of the ride. From the little I did experience, the seats seemed a bit stiff with the posture padding. Could just be because they're new, though. Need more time to formulate a complete opinion.

I'll miss the three-across seats. When I get to the train late I always look for two people who are talking to each other over the empty seat, knowing that when asked they'll opt to sit together and leave me the aisle seat.

I got to ride one of the double-deckers last week. It was clean and comfy and made me feel very Euro.

Yeah, well, let's hope they don't start charging us in euros.

Does anyone remember that Brit TV show from the 70s about a group of kids who lived on red Double Decker bus? "Get on board, get on baord, get on board with the Double Deckers..."

Anybody know what's going on with the 24 hour quiet zone? I think today was the deadline for the town to submit their plans, no?

MM, I don't recall seeing the show but here's the info.

More p.r. b.s. from NJT. The Montclair line trains are among the most crowded rush hours trains in the system. How about putting these new cars on rush hour routes where and when they are needed?

typical. sardine cans at rush hour, double deckers for off peak.

also, here's a cool poll for all of you:

Can anyone name an UGLIER structure in NYC than Penn Station?
